We are a group of second year Knitted Textile Designers from the University of Brighton who have collaborated to create a digital forecast of design ideas for fair-trade.

 Hopefully you’ll find the information in this presentation inspirational and it will get your creativity flowing! These are ideas that you can adapt 

to your personal design requirements and develop through use of local materials and your own skills.

Natural Dye RecipeMadder - Rubia Tinctoria

INGREDIENTS60g dried root30g pre-mordanted hand-spun yarn, pre-soaked overnight before dyeing

METHOD1) Soak dried madder root overnight.2) Slowly raise temperature to 180-190 degrees (*do not boil) High temperatures make the reds turn towards brown.3) Keep at 180 degrees for 20 minutes.4) Add presoaked, pre-mordanted yarn. Bring to 180-190 degrees again and hold at that temperature for 1 hour.5) Cool 2 days in dye-bath for best results.6) Rinse in cool water.7) Hang to dry in shade.
