Stilled Lives, oil on canvas, 400mm X 400mm

‘Traces’ is inspired by a family archive of photographs, some of which were

taken on the Isles of Scilly a century ago, and pottery fragments unearthed

from the kitchen garden of a 17th century house in Perranuthnoe. These

found remnants of past lives seem to call for documentation, elevation

and preservation but, more often than not, are discarded.

The reproductions of a tiny moment from the past, represented by the

photographs, result in emblems of transience; fixing our distance from

the time and people depicted. The images are unsatisfactory signifiers of

vanished lives; the fragments of crockery are inadequate representations

of their original form. Should they be treasured or do they simply serve as

memento mori?

Pippa Young is studying fine art at University College Falmouth and is

a member of the New Street Artists cooperative based at New Street

Gallery, opposite the Exchange in Penzance, Cornwall.
