1 Elements

Since its inception in 1980, Grimshaw has made Industrial Design and the production of bespoke architectural details a cornerstone of its work. Born out of a desire to push the boundaries of material and construction technology, the Industrial Design Unit utilises its expertise across a range of projects, both in support and independent of Grimshaw’s architecture and master planning. The results are innovative and lasting, integral to the sites and architecture that they serve and above all engaging to users in both straightforward and surprising ways.

The Elements exhibition brings together some of Grimshaw Industrial Design’s finest work, exhibited in photography, drawings, models and full scale furniture mock-ups and structural details. From auditorium seating to light fixtures to street furniture for train stations and bus stops, Elements relates Grimshaw’s careful investigations of the components that make our buildings and cities work.

Elements exhibits the recent work and legacy projects of Grimshaw Industrial Design, an integral component in Grimshaw’s architectural studio. The bespoke creation of industrial design elements critical to architectural projects has been a part of the practice since its inception, and has grown to include the completion of numerous original projects at a variety of scales, both applied within other projects and as singularly pure creations.

Guided by the same first principles design approach utilised across the Grimshaw practice, the Industrial Design Unit seeks to find wholly unique solutions defined by their utility, economy and efficiency. A clear understanding of the procurement process and an extensive catalog of work developed in concert with an array of manufacturers allows Grimshaw Industrial Design to successfully drive projects from inception to completion.

This holistic process leads to details and products that are not just elegant and aesthetically pleasant but more than anything, fit for their purpose. Their longevity and timeless qualities speak not only to their craft but to a real sense of sustainability imbued in design that endures over usage and time.
