President’s MessageJanuary, 2013
Greetings all and welcome to 2013.
I am very honored to be the President for 2013 of such a fine organization. It was not too long ago that I was a brand new member and was impressed by the opportunities and education that were made available to me through this group.
I know that I have some pretty big shoes to fill… well, actually I do have big shoes but I was meaning that I have some great footsteps to follow. I am very pleased that many of those who made those early steps with this group are still involved and available to assist me.
The beginning of the year is, tradition-ally, a good time for photographers to stop and take a deep breath. The busy Christmas rush is just behind us and the spring shooting isn’t in full swing yet. This is a good time to be reevaluating and reassessing where you are, where your business is, where you want it to be and how to get it there.
We are excited about bringing back the Mini-seminars this year. TAPPA also has some additional ideas about making more educational opportunities avail-able to our members so keep your ears open for coming news.
Dave Cross will be our January speaker and he will be talking about streamlin-ing your Photoshop work flow.
Don’t forget about Imaging USA, in Atlanta, January 20-22, 2013.

Coming Events ...Thanks to Demi Moore on the cover of Vanity Fair, maternity photography has become mainstream and can be a lucrative part of your portrait business – especially if you do a lot of children’s photography (where do you think the children come from?). Maternity pho-tography happens all year round so it’s not seasonal income and it’s time sensi-tive so you don’t have clients putting it off till next year like family photos. Just like children’s photography, parents value the new life that’s entering their world and are willing to spend money on this special occasion to capture it! Damon will talk about targeting this market with your website, defining a style, and how to create beautiful im-ages with those magnificent bellies!

Photoshop is an amazing tool, but as photographers the goal should be to spend as little time as possible in Photoshop and get back to shooting. In this talk Dave will cover some ways to speed up your work in Photoshop, from built-in automation to not-so-obvious speed enhancements. You’ll walk away with key tech-niques that will help you get more done in less time, and that can enhance your creativity (and sales).
Dave will also demonstrate a new product from Westcott that makes green screen photography a very interest-ing choice for portraits, event photographers and even wedding photo booths.

So You Want to Be a Rock Star Photographer by Gary Fong
HHHHH
By Chuck Vosburgh
Gary Fong is best known for his invention, the Gary Fong LightSphere. Before invent-ing the LightSphere, he was a well estab-lished wedding photographer. Now retired from shooting, Gary focuses his efforts on writing and teaching and is an outspoken critic of the new wave of workshops that claim to help new photographers become rich and famous with very little effort or ex-pertise. That’s where his latest book So You
Want to Be a Rock Star Photographer starts.
The book starts with disaster stories from his own experience and gives a sobering testimony that it is not easy to be a wedding photographer. He follows his disaster stories with a series of four profiles of “Rockstar” photographer/instructors. The profiles are for the most part true, with a good measure of opinion and sarcasm and the subjects are given fictitious names. In this section of the book Gary does an excellent job of being very clear about his disapproval without sounding pious or overly critical.
The middle part of the book outlines what has happened to the market in recent years and how to forge a real career in today’s market. This is where the book goes from being entertaining to being a very detailed and realistic how-to book. This is the part of the book where I thought I would lose interest because I am not a wedding photographer and have no plans to become one. Instead, I was educated and entertained and actually looked forward to the next chapter. One thing that struck me is how much of the information Gary gives is applicable to any type of photographic business.
Gary closes his book with three chapters of practical advice, encouragement and a summation of why he believes this knowledge is important and the harm being done by the “Rockstars”. Finally, he closes with advice for the novice, advice for the seasoned pro losing business and why he’s so passionate about this.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.
Editorial
By Chuck Vosburgh, TAPPA Tribune Editor
Of all the people who help in the creation of your newsletter, I’d like to commend Rick Lewis. Rick has the responsibility for what is in my opin-ion the most difficult task – to photo-graph our meetings and events. I’m sure you know what it’s like to pho-tograph an event in less than ideal conditions. Rick does that, and the subjects are all accomplished pho-tographers and friends. He must have nerves of steel. Rick has volunteered to be our Photographer for another year.
Thank you Rick.
