A word from your LtG

Happy New Year, Key Clubbers! I hope you’ve

had a good winter break and fantastic start to

2015! I hope you’re ready for DCON 2015! Don’t

forget; your paperwork and registration are due

no later than January 24th. Talk to your clubs

about transportation and funding for it if you

haven’t already!

I’m happy to announce the election of Pearl

Cutting; the incoming Lieutenant Governor!

She will take office in my place during DCON

and serve for the following year. I can tell she is

going to do an amazing job! You can read a

bit more about her on page 8.

Let’s make 2015 a year to remember! Not only

for ourselves but also for the people we serve

and love on a daily basis! See you at DCON!

A word from your LtG Elect

Hello! My name is Pearl and I am so excited to

be your new Lieutenant Governor and to

meet all of you! I am a junior at North Eugene

High School and before this I served as the

Vice President for our club.

I have many hobbies, including skiing, water

polo, playing bass, hanging out with my

friends, and listening to music. I love the

outdoors and being active.

For the upcoming school year, I plan to create

more service projects to participate in as a

division, not just as individual schools. I hope to

do more outdoor oriented projects to benefit

not only the community but also the

environment.

A word from your Trustee

Happy 2015, Pacific-Northwest!

I’m so glad that we have finally made it.

After a swamped first semester of school, a

myriad of Key Club events, and a relaxing

holiday vacation, I’m sure you all are so

excited to welcome in the New Year. A lot of

people see this this month as a time of

resolutions. However, I think it can better be

characterized as a time to reflect and look

forward to the future. What awesome things

have you all done so far with your time in Key

Club? How will you make the most of the rest

of this year?

Thus far, I have seen Key Clubbers do some

spectacular things. Shout out to Tasmia

Ahmed and her division for collecting 70 gift

cards for sex trafficked survivors in Portland.

Shout out to the Communications

Committee for completely renovating the

face of the Pacific-Northwest district website.

Shout out to Kevin Zhang for bringing the

“bowl” to #palabowlo. These Key Clubbers

have inspired us to do great things.

11

What’s even more exciting is that there’s still so

much to come. Whether it’s participating in

“Service to Infinity and Beyond” at the 2015 District

Convention or finally reaching our goal for The

Eliminate Project, the coming months have much

in store. Don’t feel the need to make new

resolutions; your passion for service, leadership,

and camaraderie will naturally take the district to

new heights this 2015.

In terms of the international level, there are several

items we can anticipate together. First of all, 2015 is

our year to eliminate maternal/neonatal tetanus

(MNT) from the face of the planet! We’re taking

things to a whole new level. The International

Board has its own personal pen fundraiser (I’m

bringing them to DCON!), and if all of Key Club

International can raise an additional $80,000,

board members will be kissing an octopus at our

winter board meeting. (Yes, I’m very scared. But I

do it fo’ da Eliminate!)

For clarity, our winter board meeting will be held in

Detroit, Michigan, from January 22 to 25, 2015. The

board meeting agenda has already been posted

to the Key Club website. If you have any questions,

or if you’d like me to bring an additional topic to

the board, don’t hesitate to reach out.

12

Finally, with this year’s International

Convention swiftly approaching, it’s

definitely an event we can eagerly look

forward to. Held from June 24 to 28, 2015,

in Indianapolis, the home of Key Club

International headquarters, this will be an

experience you don’t want to miss.

Because it is the 100th anniversary of

Kiwanis, a lot of our programs will be held

in conjunction with Circle K and Kiwanis

members, making for a whopping

estimate of 12,000 attendees. We have

some awesome events planned; we’ll be

renting out an entire street of

Indianapolis, Hellogoodbye will be

performing, and we’ll be surrounded by

tons of fun things to do (i.e. free

museums, bikes to ride around the city,

zoos, etc.). It’s the event of a lifetime, so

start fundraising and planning now!

Indeed, 2014 may have brought much

positivity and joy –especially in Key Club

International— but I’m sure 2015 can

offer even more. Have a great year,

everyone!

Children’s Miracle Network is a nonprofit organization that raises money to benefit hospitalized kids while increasing

awareness of its member hospitals. All CMN Hospitals contributions directly benefit hospitals, helping to

purchase up-to-date equipment, train staff, conduct life-saving research, implement outreach programs and provide health care for children whose parents can’t

afford to pay

UNICEF, the only organization of the United Nations dedicated exclusively to children, works with other United

Nations bodies, governments and non-governmental organizations to assist in children’s needs through

community-based services in primary health care, basic education, and safe water and sanitation in more than 150

developing countries.

The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. March of Dimes was founded by our 32nd President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, in the fight

against polio. After the discovery of the polio vaccine, March of Dimes focused their efforts to improve the

health of babies and has been successful with the help and enthusiasm of many grassroots volunteers.

The Eliminate Project

Nineteen years ago, Kiwanis International made a pledge, a commitment to fixing one of the major tragedies in the world today; Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus. Before the Eliminate fundraising campaign, MNT was responsible for the deaths of 60,000 babies every year.

Since Kiwanis and UNICEF teamed up to fight this terrible disease, the campaign has gained support and publicity beyond what we could even imagine Kiwanis and UNICEF have made it their goal to not only decrease the number of deaths, but to eliminate MNT altogether. It only takes $1.80 to vaccinate a woman and all of her future children.

The campaign has already raised

more than 53 million dollars and

has eliminated MNT from 34

countries! The goal that UNICEF

and Kiwanis have set is to raise

$100 million by the completion of

the project in 2015. If that goal is

reached, it would be enough to

successfully eliminate Maternal

and Neonatal tetanus from the

planet entirely. We can’t do it

without you!
