The 6 Biggest Mistakes of Golf Instructors

1. Teaching a Method for a Model

When a teacher has a one size fits all method or model:• it defies the individualism of the person in

front of them

• it defies the whole theme of golf which is full of individuals, not all cookie cutters swings that are all the same way

The solution is reallysimple and that is weare teaching a motorskill and in teaching amotor skill, all you haveto do is to determinethe hierarchy of skills.

• When evaluating somebody, don’t evaluate them and say they don’t look like my model.

• Evaluate by saying here’s the skill that this golfer’s missing and get to work on that skill.

• Build the skill. Explain it, demonstrate it, show it and move them through it.

• Get them feedback.

2. No Focus on Short Game

• Focus on the part of the game where they can have the biggest scoring change to their game.

• Start building those small skills. Those impact and ball-striking skills and chipping and pitching that leads to better ball-striking and a full swing.

There’s some claps and yells for a long drive butthe suspense and the roars are for those puttsgoing in. So we really need to focus on gettingour students to understand the short game.

3. No Evaluations

• There should be a fitness.

• We should have 5 or 10 or some number of things that we screen in those golfers who come to us so that we can know what their limitations are.

• Check their equipment. Make sure that they got the clubs that aren’t hurting them at the very least.

Make sure that especially in your initiallesson that you have these evaluationsbuilt in to your program. Built in to whatyou do.

4. Communication

• Don’t use too much terminology or big words.

• Never use a whole different language that the golfer does not understand.

• Use simple words in English whenever possible.

5. Single Lessons, No Program

• Set up different programs for different types of golfers.

• Have a practice program, a supervised practice program.

What it does is it shows organization. It showsthat you’re on the ball. It shows that you’re atop-notch professional. It gets that senseacross that you’re the go-to person.

6. Improper Video Analysis

• It gets too technical. Too demoralising.

• It goes from being a helpful tool to being a harmful tool.

• Use it as a tool to help your golfers understand pick priorities.

• Stay away from analysing every different things in the video.

• Explain based on skill not on look.

• Stay away from a string of consciousness type of lesson.

Be aware of these 6 mistakes when teaching golf. Take your teaching

game to a new level.
