February 16, 2020 St. John Vianney Parish Page Three
From the Pastor of February 22/23, 2020, we’ll be celebrating in
our diocese the second Safe Haven Sunday with
the theme, Equipping the Family: Having Criti-
cal Conversations. Safe Haven Sunday finds its
inspiration in the U. S. Bishops 2015 document,
Create in Me a Clean Heart. There, the bishops
write, “The use of pornography by anyone in the
home deprives the home of its role as a safe
haven and has negative effects throughout a
family’s life and across generations.” When a parent discovers that his or her child
or teenager has been looking at pornography,
it can be alarming, hurtful, and even frightening.
In the confusion of the moment, it’s important
for parents to understand that there is a way
forward to a place of healing and grace.
Next weekend, we’ll provide each family with
a full, step-by-step guide for Catholic parents
on how to navigate this difficult situation in the
form of a book, Confident: Helping Parents
Navigate Online Exposure. Once again, this awareness weekend is meant to
draw our attention as a parish community to the
seriousness of the issues of pornography and to
recommit ourselves to take steps to ensure our
homes are safe havens for all. I encourage you to
begin learning now by texting SECURE to 66866
to receive seven days of free emailed digital tips.
I look forward to celebrating our second Safe
Haven Sunday with you next weekend! My prayers and blessings to you all!
Ash Wednesday Liturgical Schedule
The Distribution of ashes will take place at all
Masses on Wednesday, February 26th. Mass times
are at 7, 8:30 & 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will take
place after the 10 a.m. Mass and Eucharistic
Adoration will continue until 5 p.m., concluding
with Benediction. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available
from 5–6 p.m.
Director of Faith Formation
After 11 years serving as our
Director of Faith Formation
(including 7 years as Director of
Youth Ministry), Frank Boyle has decided that
the time is soon approaching for him to step
down and retire. I am most grateful for Frank’s
dedicated service to our parish over these years.
He has worked very hard to build a strong faith
formation program and sacramental preparation
process for our children, youth and families,
while also providing effective on-going formation
for adults such as our bible studies and faith
enrichment courses. We ask for your prayers as
we begin this transition and start the search for
new leadership at this position. The job posting
for the new position is below: Family Faith Life Coordinator—
St. John Vianney Parish, St. Pete Beach
A full-time position to direct and oversee
programs of catechesis, sacramental preparation,
and on-going faith formation for children and
adults. Good leadership, organizational,
relational skills needed. A strong formation in
the teachings of the Catholic faith essential.
Salary commensurate with experience. To apply, please send cover letter and resumé
to Joanne Tomassi, Parish Operations Manager
at jtomassi@sjvcc.org, or call 360.1147, ext. 202.
Safe Haven Sunday
Dear Families, One issue that’s becoming more
and more difficult for individuals, marriages,
children and families as a whole is the struggle
with pornography. Regrettably, pornography
can impact both children and adults spiritually,
emotionally, physically, and relationally. As you work hard to protect your families,
I want to equip you with the appropriate tools
to form, protect and guide your families on this
specific issue. Thus, next weekend, the weekend

Pro-Life Sunday Thank you to the Czyszczon family who brought
up the Rose for Life on February 9th. This month’s
rose is for all who are struggling with infertility,
that their hearts and
Minds be open to the
option of adoption. Volunteers are needed
to bring up the Rose
for Life on the second
Sunday of each month. If you or your family is
interested in bringing
up the Rose for Life,
in memory of a loved one,
you may sign up in the
Rose for Life book located in the front lobby of the
church, or email castingnets4him@gmail.com
School Corner
February is Fun Month for Our School We begin with celebrating Catholic
Schools week; our middle school
students attending state drama
competition; exciting preparation
being made for Mardi Gras, just before Lent
and the Father/Daughter Dance, which takes
place at the end of the month. Many busy and
happy faces. Every 3rd Sunday of the month the generosity of
our parishioners assists us with financial support
as we maintain the highest level of education for
our students. Your generous support offers the
school the opportunity to assist families in need:
help defray the high book costs we have each
year, pay for computer programs that are used in
Classrooms, offset the cost of testing materials
required for 2nd–8th grade and much more.
Thank you for your continued support! We have begun the admission application
process for the 2020/2021 school year and hope to
have a robust enrollment. Our Open House was
successful as we were visited by 25 families who
enjoyed tours of the school; meeting teachers and
seeing energetic students. We look forward to a
prosperous 2020/2021 school year. We, the students, faculty and staff are very
grateful for the support we receive from our
generous parishioners and parents. Children
spend time in the classroom learning important
lessons every day. However, as we all know,
the very best way to learn is through example.
Our students experience examples of compassion,
consideration and generosity from the people in
our parish and school community. The mission of St. John Vianney Catholic School
is to provide a Christ-centered education by
sharing faith and imparting quality academics to
ensure a strong future for the students entrusted
in our care.

walkway that parallels the beach for about a mile.
Meet at the County Park Beach Access at
104th Avenue where parking is available for a
small fee. The beach access is across the street
from Publix. We will be walking about 2 miles, so wear your
walking shoes, bring your rosary and join us
for a beautiful morning. Make a day of it, pack a picnic lunch, stay after
with your family. This is a paved trail that is
stroller friendly! For questions, email castingnets4Him@gmail.com.

Annual Pastoral Appeal Last weekend was commitment weekend for the
Annual Pastoral Appeal. Thank you
to all who remembered to bring
their pledge and/or donation.
If you forgot or haven’t yet decided
how you will be involved, it is not
too late. The campaign is on-going, and pledges
and donations are welcome at any time. God bless
you for your stewardship and your prayers. This weekend we welcome Diane Kledzik, a
speaker from the Office of Marriage and Family
Life, to share how the Annual Pastoral Appeal
helps their mission. The Office for Marriage &
Family Life exists to build up the Body of Christ
in the Diocese of St. Petersburg by providing a
Catholic vision of Sacramental Marriage as an
icon of the love between Christ and His Bride, the
church, by validating the family as holy in all of
the various dimensions that constitute the family
unit, and by regarding the parish community
as a family of families and small communities.
Many services are available through this office,
to help our parish continue to educate couples
and help them develop strong, Christ centered
marriages and families.

Finding Balance!
Christ Renews His Parish Father of gentleness and strength, help
me to find the proper balance in all my dealings with
the world and in all my relations with other people. Sometimes I am headstrong and stubborn; other times
I am fearful and submissive. I overreact to some things;
others I fail to take seriously. I value my faith and my
membership in Your family, but I don’t always show it. Give me wisdom and strength, courage and prudence,
boldness and compassion, so that I may proclaim Your
truth to a world that often follows bright, shining lies. Let me know Your will, and help me to follow it—
humbly, confidently, and lovingly—so that my life will
witness to Your truth and Your kingdom may break
into our world. Blessed be Your name forever and ever.
Amen. Finding balance in our everyday lives is a constant
challenge. We need to be firmly rooted in our faith
and our relationship with Jesus. To accomplish
this means spending time in prayer and quiet time
with the Lord. Pray for the women who are
finding that balance in life as they experience

Safe Haven Sunday
Equipping the Family:
Having Critical Conversations The constant flood of influence that comes
through the internet and social media in all of
its various forms, along with social pressures
from peers make it difficult for children to live
virtuous and holy lives. In the digital age, it’s
not a matter of if your child will see something
inappropriate online. It’s only a matter of when.
And regrettably, internet pornography is teach-
ing our children how and what to think about
sex and marriage. Next weekend, February 22–23, 2020, the Diocese
of St. Petersburg will be celebrating our second
annual Safe Haven Sunday. This weekend of
awareness will provide free resources to you
to give you confidence of how to talk to your
children about internet dangers, as well as their
personal online and offline choices. Please join us with your prayers and presence as
we prepare for this unique event. To learn more,
