team, coached by M a r t y B r o w n , has begun prepar ing for the u p coming season. TheVikingB,who are coming off las t year's disappo int ing season, are once again i n a tough league t h a t includes t h e p e r e n n i a l p o w e r h o u s e M a c A r t h u r , as we l l as two other outstanding squads-Garden City and Bel lmore/J J J C . Undoubtedly , the ^^kings' success w i l l h inge on i t s p i t ch ing corps, which includes senior M a t t Shodell, jun iors Damon Sleicher, Kev in Mahoney, M i k e Sul l ivan and Ralph Petruzzo, and sophomore B i l l y Davis . Shodell, who received Honorable Ment ion A l l -Divis ion honors last year as a jun ior , w i l l be counted on as the

ace of t h i s year's staff. The showing t h a t the

other team members make w i l l also, o f course, figure i n t o the team's success. Jason Levy should y ie ld dividends, whi le Sleicher, Petruzzo, Jon Camera, Shodell, Greg Panullo, and T i m Mahoney w i l l make imp<»-tant ctmtributitms both at the plate and i n the field. Girls Softball Starts Impressively by Dan Juceam

The Vars i ty Softball team, coached by M s . Stephanie Joan-non, has recently commenced the regular season. I n the past couple of years the team has not l ived up to the fine reputat ion t h a t had been previously establ ished. However, t h i s year's squad has m a n y veterans and a l l the essentials to produce a w i n n i n g club. One interest ing aspect of the team is i t s m i x of grade levels, which range fix)m fi^shmen to seniors.

On the mound , Joannon i n tends to rotate three year vet

eran Ju l i e Suk w i t h r o d d e Jor-dana Glantz . Behind the plate. Port w i l l use Antonel la Asaro and D a i i a M a r k o w s k i . A p r i l Walker , i n her second year o f vars i ty S o f t b a l l , w i l l play first; V i c k i Reed, a senicH-, w i l l play second; A m y Flyer , a three year returnee and past A l l -Div i s ion representative, w i l l cover shortstop; and Lisa Cardiello, an other three-year veteran, w i l l be heavily re l ied upon at t h i r d

w i l l p lay center, and three year veteran S u z a n i ^ Hess w i l l play r i g h t field. Joannon has yet to decide upon the specific roles which K s ^ n Johnson and JoAnn Suk w i l l p lay th i s season.

I n the first non-league competition of the regular season. Port handi ly defeated Wheatley 10-4, again rea f f i rmi n g the potential of th i s w e l l -balanced squad.

Girls Badminton Lacks Depth by Seth Yablans

The Schreiber H i ^ School Badminton t e a m , again coached by M r . A l b e r t Jessen, has begun i t s practice and t r a i n i n g for the 1989 season. Although the squad consists of many new players, there are several r e t u r n i n g stalwarts. They include Momoko

Kish igami , K i m i k o Miakang , and J u n k o M i r a . Coach Jessen stated. T h e team does not look bad, b u t i t does lack depth." He also indiccated t h a t the team should be very successful i n the first and second singles positions, b u t the rest of the slots w i l l be a mi^or challenge for the

team to fill successfully. Jessen expects t h a t M e k Wonanabi , a new addit ion to the badminton team, w i l l be one of the team's top players and should have an outstanding season. The team begins the i r league schedule w i t h the i r first match on A p r i l 4 against Farmingdale . .

O f course, no team can be successful w i t h o u t a strcmg defense. Th is year's defensive u n i t w i l l be led by seniors Nicola Eckert , Karen Graser, Amanda N o r t h , Tracy Persson, and A l l -Div is ion player Janice G r u n -twick .
