SPORTS Varsity Baseball Counting Heavily on Pitching 8 by Craig Glantz •Oie Boys' Varsity Baseball team, coached by Marty Brown, has begun preparing for the up- coming season. TheVikingB,who are coming off last year's disap- pointing season, are once again in a tough league that includes the perennial powerhouse MacArthur, as well as two other outstanding squads-Garden City and Bellmore/J JJC. However, this year Port expects to fare well against several teams in- cluding Herricks and Great Neck South. Undoubtedly, the ^^kings' success will hinge on its pitching corps, which includes senior Matt Shodell, juniors Damon Sleicher, Kevin Mahoney, Mike Sullivan and Ralph Petruzzo, and sopho- more Billy Davis. Shodell, who received Honorable Mention All- Division honors last year as a junior, will be counted on as the ace of this year's staff. The showing that the other team members make will also, of course, figure i n t o the team's success. Jason Levy should yield dividends, while Sleicher, Petruzzo, Jon Camera, Shodell, Greg Panullo, and Tim Mahoney will make imp<»-tant ctmtributitms both at the plate and in the field. Newcomers Tom Demsker, Billy Davis, Tom Eletto, Doug Borden, Ted Deinard, and Derek Navinski should also play vital roles.' Last year was a rough one for Port. However, this year, the Vikings will look to turn it around, as veteran Jason Levy stated. T h e (team's) overall at- titude is better (than last year's). This team will hustle and play heads-up baseball." Schreiber faithfiils hope for good season, as this year's team attempts to put Port baseball on the map. Varsity first baseman Jason Levy prepares to scoop up a grounder. Girls Softball Starts Impressively by Dan Juceam The Varsity Softball team, coached by Ms. Stephanie Joan- non, has recently commenced the regular season. In the past couple of years the team has not lived up to the fine reputation that had been previously estab- lished. However, this year's squad has many veterans and all the essentials to produce a winning club. One interesting aspect of the team is its mix of grade levels, which range fix)m fi^shmen to seniors. On the mound, Joannon in- tends to rotate three year vet- eran Julie Suk with rodde Jor- dana Glantz. Behind the plate. Port will use Antonella Asaro and Daiia Markowski. April Walker, in her second year of varsity Softball, will play first; Vicki Reed, a senicH-, will play second; Amy Flyer, a three year returnee and past All-Division representative, will cover short- stop; and Lisa Cardiello, an- other three-year veteran, will be heavily relied upon at third It is anticipated that Ericka Chose will cover left field, Christine Kubin (a fireshman) will play center, and three year veteran Suzani^ Hess will play right field. Joannon has yet to decide upon the specific roles which Ks^n Johnson and JoAnn Suk will play this season. In their first scrimmage. Port routed Manhasset 15-3 in a five- inning game, giving Coach Joan- non her first indication that much can be expected from this year's club. In the first non- league competition of the regu- lar season. Port handily defeated Wheatley 10-4, again reaffirm- ing the potential of this well- balanced squad. Although the squad consists of many new players, there are several returning stalwarts. They include Momoko Kishigami, Kimiko Miakang, and Junko Mira. Coach Jessen stated. The team does not look bad, but it does lack depth." He also indiccated that the team should be very successful in the first and second singles posi- tions, but the rest of the slots will be a mi^or challenge for the team to fill successfully. Jessen expects thatMek Wonanabi, a new addition to the badminton team, will be one of the team's top players and should have an outstanding season. The team begins their league schedule with their first match on April 4 against Farmingdale.. by Jordana Glantz The Girls' Varsity Lacrosse team is coming off a very suc- cessful season in which they reached the quarterfinals of the playoffs and had a final record of 11-6-1. This year's team will be led by a corp of eleven returning players. Coach Winter stated, "The returnees have experience which is the biggest attribute you can offer a team." Of course, no team can be successful without a strcmg de- fense.
