and Social Work

“Technology has dramatically changed the world—now almost anyone can “move” at Internet-speed…”

– AED, 2009

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)

ICT is a new age tool that can decrease distances, end isolation, speed up developmental processes and enhance the overall quality of life. There are various technologies that come under the purview of ICT. They include telephones, cellphones, computers, the Internet, software systems, etc.

Access to Information and resources of social work using social media

Types of ICTs

• Voice-based communications • Computers• The Internet • Community radio • Wireless communication

“Social media is best understood as a group of new kinds of online media, which has most or all of the following characteristics: Participation, Openness, Conversation, Community and Connectedness”

Mayfield, 2008

Social Media is “faster, better, cheaper”

In truth, to claim social media itself as “new” is slightly misleading. From the beginning, the internet was founded on message boards, chat rooms and peer to peer communication. What has changed is the mass involvement that modern social platforms inspire.

Social Media

“Online applications, platforms and media which aim to facilitate interaction, collaboration and the sharing of content”

At this time, there are basically six kinds of social media. Note, though, that innovation and change are rife.

1.Social Networks2. Blogs3. Wikis4. Podcasts5. Forums6. Content Communities

Blog• "Blog" is an abbreviated version of "weblog," which is a

term used to describe web sites that maintain an ongoing chronicle of information.

• A blog is a frequently updated, personal website featuring diary-type commentary and links to articles on other Web sites.

• Provides commentary on news or a particular subject, such as football or politics.

• Could also be an online personal diary.

Forum

• areas for online discussion, often around specific topics and interests.

• Forums came about before the term ‘social media’ and are a powerful and popular element of online communities.

Forum

• Internet forums are the longest established form of online social media. They most commonly exist around specific topics and interests.

• Each discussion in a forum is known as a thread, and many different threads can be active simultaneously. This makes forums good places to find and engage in a variety of detailed discussions. They are often built into websites as an added feature, but some exist as stand-alone entities.

“In 2008, if you’re not on a social networking site, you’re not on the Internet.”

User Generated Content, Social Media, and Advertising – An Overview (April 2008) by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB)

Wiki• Wikis are websites that allow people to

contribute or edit content on them. They are great for collaborative working, for instance creating a large document or project plan with a team in several offices. A wiki can be as private or as open as the people who create it want it to be.

Content Communities

• Content communities look a bit like social networks – you have to register, you get a home page and you can make connections with friends. However, they are focused on sharing a particular type of content.

RSS

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a

key technology in social media. It

connects users to content and moves

content into a variety of

platforms.

“Social computing is not a fad. Nor is it something that will pass you or your company by.Gradually, social computing will impact almost every role, at every kind of company, in all parts of the world.”
