• Entering hot places without wearing a hat.

• Not putting enough sunscreen on at an event or reapplying it eg: Going to the beach for 3 hours and only putting sunscreen on at the start.

HereditaryHereditary • Some cases of skin cancer might run in families. In those

cases skin cancer is mostly caused by the abnormal genes that children inherit from their parents. Genes make children and their parents look somehow alike. They also make them likely to get some of the diseases that have been going down the family for years!

• Skin cancer is the world’s most common type of cancer.

• An estimated 114,000 new cases of Cancer were diagnosed in Australia 2010.

• NZ has the highest rate of melanoma in the world, with 1,800 new cases each year.

• The main cause of skin cancer is the Ultra-Violet radiation from the sun.

• Start preventing Skin Cancer in your childhood because most people get about 50% of their lifetime sun exposure before the age of 18.

• Pick a sunscreen that protects against both UV radiation in the sunlight, UVA and UVB.

• Protect your skin from the sun by wearing appropriate clothing for the weather and not exposing your body to the sun rays.

• Get regular check-ups especially if the disease runs through your family.

Support Services

• The Cancer Council NSW is a support service for people with Skin Cancer.

• They give you information that will answer some of your questions and help you think about other questions you want to ask your doctor.

• Their best advice is to see a doctor and have a check-up if you are concerned.
