Skin cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer in the United States with millions of cases diagnosed each year. There are more new cases than breast, prostate, lung and colon cancers combined. Anyone can develop skin cancer, and while it once primarily affected the elderly, more and more patients in their 20s and 30s are experiencing cancer in both initial and advanced stages.

The leading cause of skin cancer is sun

exposure, whether repeated over the

course of a lifetime or infrequent, but

intense exposure leading to sunburn.

Likewise, tanning beds are considered a

Class I cancer-causing agent, giving off

UV exposure that is even more intense

than natural sunshine. Keep yourself

healthy in the sun and learn how to

identify suspicious spots with these self-

care tips.

You should apply sunscreen every day, rain or

shine, even if you plan to spend most of the day

indoors. Dr. Schlessinger likes EltaMD sunscreens

best, and he recommends an SPF of at least 30.

Apply one ounce, or enough to fill a standard-sized

shot glass, to the entire body. Don’t forget the ears

and neck! You’ll need to reapply every two hours

or immediately after swimming or sweating. There

is no need to let the possibility of breakouts keep

you from applying sunscreen to your face. With

non-comedogenic formulas like EltaMD UV Clear

SPF 46 Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen you don’t have

to worry about clogged pores and breakouts.

Always wear sunscreen

The sun is at its strongest

between the hours of 10:00 a.m.

and 4:00 p.m. During this time

period, UV rays are at their most

intense, and you are most likely to

experience over-exposure. If you

can’t avoid being outdoors, seek

shade as often as possible.

Avoid the sun when it is at its strongest

For extra protection from the sun, wide-brimmed hats, UV-blocking sunglasses and other clothing can go a long way toward keeping skin safe. Special clothing that includes a UPF, or ultraviolet protection factor, is available at outdoor stores. This clothing ranges from an SPF of 15 to 50 depending on fabric. Also, check out Heliocare Sun Protection Pills. These supplements do not replace sunscreen, but they do help the body build up its natural defense against harmful UVA and UVB rays.

Despite common myths, there is no such thing as a healthy tan, whether it is achieved indoors or outdoors. Tanning beds are potentially even more dangerous than natural sunshine because they can emit 10 to 15 times more radiation. Topical self-tanning products are the only FDA-approved way to achieve a summer glow. You can find a selection of professional self-tannersat LovelySkin.com.

Of course prevention is best when it comes to skin cancer, but early detection is key for successful treatment. Examine your skin from head to toe at least once a month to determine any areas of concern. A change in a mole or spot could be the first sign of cancer. Look for moles or spots that:

• Are asymmetrical

• Have irregular edges or borders

• Vary in color and/or bleed

• Have a diameter larger than a pencil eraser

• Appear to have changed color, shape or size

Most skin cancer will appear in places that are frequently exposed to the sun such as the face, neck, ears, back, chest and shoulders, so these areas may need extra attention.

Even if you have been performing self-

exams and appear to be healthy, it’s

important to schedule a yearly

appointment with your dermatologist.

They can help spot cancer at its very

earliest stages. They can also

recommend the best sun protection

products, as well as treatments for any

sun damage or premature signs of aging

you may have already experienced from

previous sun exposure.

See your dermatologist for yearly checkups
