Who does skin harvesting? When, where and how?

Skin Harvesting Team - one Doctor, two Nurses and one attendant

A special battery-operated instrument called DERMATOME is used

Skin Bank Team will come to the donor’s home, hospital or morgue wherever the donor is kept.

The whole procedure takes only about 45 minutes

Where is the skin removed from?

Skin is harvested from both the legs, both the thighs and the back

Only the uppermost layer of the skin is harvested

No bleeding or disfigurement occurs at the site where skin is harvested from

After the procedure we bandage the parts from where skin is harvested in a proper way

What are the documents required for skin donation?

A doctor will take consent of the next of kin of the donor and also a witness is required to sign the consent form before the start of the procedure

You need to produce the DEATH CERTIFICATE and its photocopy that will be evaluated by the Team Doctor before starting the procedure

What happens after skin donation?

After the skin is harvested, it is processed, screened and stored at the skin bank and then supplied to the Burns Surgeon for transplanting on burn patients as and when required

NO DONOR-RECIPIENT MATCHING REQUIRED FOR SKIN TRANSPLANT (eg. Color, Age, HLA typing, etc)

What do I do to donate skin?

It is not compulsory to pledge or register to donate your skin

Without pledging, even if the relatives inform Skin Donation team, after death, skin can be harvested.
