SAINT BONAVENTURE CHURCH33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time | nOvember 15, 2020
As Christian stewards, our mission is to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all people through word, sacrament, service and community life.
A man going on a journey called in his servants
and entrusted his possessions to them.
Matthew 25:14
Page two 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Next Sunday will be the last Sunday in the Liturgical Year. As the Church Year comes to a close, this is a good time to remember that Jesus will come again in glory. Are we ready for his Second Coming? We do not know when this will happen, we only know that it will happen.
St. Paul tell us in his First Letter to the Thessalonians, “For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief at night.” He goes on to write, “But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness, for that day to overtake you like a thief. For all of you are children of the light and children of the day. We are not of the night or of darkness. Therefore, let us not sleep as the rest do, but let us stay alert and sober” (1 Thessalonians 5:1-6).
We must stay alert and sober every day. The best way to stay alert and sober is to pray every day and do good works. We cannot take time off from our relationship with the Lord. We must stay vigilant. Make the Holy Scriptures part of your daily prayer. Do good deeds daily. Keep your focus on Jesus Christ, the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
Today’s Gospel Reading is the parable of the man who went on a journey and entrusted his possessions to three of his servants according to the ability of each of them. When the master returned, two of them doubled the amount they had received. The master called them “Good and faithful servants.” He gave them great responsibilities. One of them buried the money and gave it back to the master upon his return. The master called this one, “You wicked, lazy servant.” Then he had him thrown out, “Where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth” (Matthew 25:14-30).
We are called to do good until Jesus comes again. Just saying to the Lord, “But I didn’t do anything wrong,” is not good enough. We must invest ourselves in doing good. For example, help at the HOPE Office, “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me” (Matthew 25:31-46).
Grant us, we pray, O Lord our God, the constant gladness of being devoted to you, for it is full and lasting happiness to serve with constancy the author of all that is good. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (Collect Prayer for 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time.)

Let’s start with some good news: the strong winds last weekend didn’t blow away our large canopy at the front of the church. For most Masses, there was adequate room in the church or in the hall. For some weekend Masses, the plaza area was used for overflow. We are looking ahead to our options for Christmas Masses, but we can only explore options for now. Final decisions will need to be made as we get closer to Christmas.
Please note that the hall is not currently available for the Saturday 5:00 p.m. Mass since our Vietnamese Religious Education classes take place in the hall at 5:00, just prior to the 6:30 p.m. Vietnamese Mass. The church and the plaza are both available during the Saturday 5:00 p.m. Mass.
On the COVID front, we are still in Tier 2, the “red” Tier. At least until next week. So we can still have 100 people in our church, 100 people in our hall and virtually unlimited outdoor seating. That said, the number of COVID cases in Orange County appears to be increasing.
In the church, please remember that the white ropes at the end of some pews are intended to make those pews unavailable, allowing us to maintain 6’ of separation (every other pew). And please remember that we can’t have candles burning yet at our indoor shrines.
On the financial side, we will soon be presenting our annual financial report here in our bulletin. And yes, we still need donations to our Building Fund. More on this topic in coming weeks.
