2nd version
Young Priest Magnani came to Bocabella with an idea of building grandiose temple
Only on people’s donations to show how strong is their love to God
So Bocabella anounced this in his magazine
Story of Creation (II)
The construction
started in 1882
The architect
was Francisco de
Paula del Villar
BUT he wanted to
build a classic gothic revival church,
which was not
pretentious enough
Villar refused to
build something different
Story of Creation (III)
Gaudi began to work only
after a year
First he was
building the
projected building,
BUT
At a certain
moment he
stopped and
decide to change
the design
completely
Design was more complicat
ed, demanded more money
and time
The clients
refused to pay
Story of Creation (IV)
5! years later an anonymous person donated 500 000 pesetas
So Gaudi was continuing the construction
He increased the height from 120 to 170 meters
Story of Creation (V)
After 18 years, the XX century came and the time given for the construction ran away, but Gaudi was only working on first façade
Also the money finished again
Gaudi let go his salary, then started to invest his own money
Story of Creation (VI)

On the subject of the extremely long construction period, Gaudí is said to have remarked: "My client is not in a hurry”
Story of Creation (VI)
His work was undertaken by Domènec Sugrañes i Gras, his apprentice
Until 1936 – Spanish Civil War
One week after start of the war antireliogous fanatics put Sagrada Familia on fire and it destroyed all drafts, drawings and wooden model
Story of Creation (VII)In 1952 government decided to complete construction to attract tourists
The current director and son of Lluís Bonet (Gaudi’s assistant), Jordi Bonet i Armengol has been introducing computers into the design and construction process since the 1980s
He announced the date of completion - 2026
Failure Factors
Haven’t agreed on building requirements => architect change
Involved changes of design, which were not planned
Ran out on budget for that
No deadlines were followed
Fire destroyed the drafts for the building
Civil War
Overall, no planning involved until modern technologies
No risk assessment
No control over Gaudi
