Starting new churcheschallenging, rewarding
By W. Winston Skinner
lex Early was scrubbing a commode when he knew he
would start a church in Coweta County – in a bar.
Early, then a seminary student, was working as a
barback at the Alamo in Newnan. One night when he
was cleaning up, he had a distinct message from
God: “You’re planting a church right here.” The
prospect seemed unlikely for many reasons –
including that Early was departing soon to study
in England.
While he was matriculating at the
London School of Theology, however, Early
and his wife prayed daily about his call. He finished his studies,

County since the 1820s, but new churches are reaching out
to Cowetans in new – and old – ways. The Missionary
Training Service reports new congregations grow faster
because their main activity is evangelism, “a new church is
usually more noticeable than an older church” and because
new believers “fit in much more easily in a new church” and
invite their friends – having “more contacts with non-
Christians than those who have been in the church.”
Early and Four Corners are not unique. FaithCreek
United Methodist Church began in 2000 as a church plant.
Curtis Connally felt God calling him to come back home to
start All Souls Church of God in Christ that same year.
WellSpring Church, a Southern Baptist Convention
church that meets at Eastside Elementary School, held its
first service on Oct. 14, 2007.
All four churches grew from a conviction they
were needed. Scott McInnis, WellSpring’s pastor,
was a seminary student and on staff at
another church when he felt called to start
a church in the Senoia area.
“Every time I drove through that
town I knew it was the place. It
didn’t make sense. There was
no building, no money, no
people – just a feeling that
God wanted us there,”
McInnis said. He and his wife
would drive through Senoia
and pray – asking God for
confirmation.
“After reading statistics
that showed in a five-mile
radius of Senoia, there were
21,000 people that didn’t

returned to Newnan and began a Bible study
in his living room. Soon, there was an
invitation to lead services at the Alamo.
Today, Four Corners Church holds
worship in the bar. The official opening on Jan.
1, 2009 was marked by placement of a
chalkboard on the sidewalk inviting people.
Four Corners uses space upstairs for offices
and a children’s area.
There have been churches in Coweta

Davis, North Georgia Bishop for the
United Methodist Church, was
hoping to plant several churches in
the conference. The church
development committee for the
LaGrange District had requested a
new church be started in response to
the growth connected with the
development of SummerGrove. Julia
Crim, now associate director of the
World Methodist Evangelism
Institute, was completing her
doctorate and was appointed to lead
the effort that would become
FaithCreek.
All of the churches have faced
some challenges. All Souls’ have
been the most visible, as efforts to
get property zoned for their church
failed.
Connally said there also were
challenges early on. For much of the
first year, he and his wife, Mary, were
the only ones attending services.
“We often wondered, ‘Where are the
people?’” he remembered.
All Souls continued following its
advertised schedule, and growth
came. “Since membership was slow
at the start, the members we did
have seemed to understand the need
to get involved and help promote
the church,” Connally said.
A theme in the new churches
has been community service. For
both McInnis and Early, connecting
with the community is imperative. “I
don’t think we are doing anything
radically different, or meeting some
‘pop consumer’ need,” McInnis said.
He described WellSpring as “a
biblically based church that loves
Jesus” and talked about the LESS
philosophy that guides the
congregation.
“LESS stands for: Love God,
Encourage family, Serve others, Seek
the lost,” McInnis said. “It’s a process
and our reminder. We don’t have a
lot of committees, classes or sports.”
LESS helps WellSpring stay
focused. “If you find yourself at
church every night of the week,
you’re not in the world meeting
people who need the love of Jesus,”
McInnis said. “At WellSpring, we
encourage our folks to spend LESS
time in the church, and more time
being the church.”
WellSpring’s members have
helped with many community
projects. “Now when there is a need
for volunteers or a project that the
city needs help with we get a call –
attend church – I knew Senoia was
the place,” he recalled. “For me, it
was a combination of need and
calling.”
Connally, a 1962 graduate of
Central High in Newnan, spent
much of his adult life in California.
“The Lord moved strongly on my
heart to return to Newnan to begin a
church,” he remembered. In July
1999, he was offered early
retirement. Two months later, he and
his wife moved into their home in
Newnan.
A decade ago, Bishop Lindsey

Curtis and Mary Connally of AllSouls Church returned toNewnan from California tobegin a church.

and we love that,” he said.
At Four Corners, Early has a
similar approach, although projects
sometimes raise the eyebrows of
more traditional Christians. During
this year’s Wine About the Economy
event – in which participants visit
local businesses and sample wines
– about 60 Four Corners members
stationed themselves downtown
giving directions, picking up trash,
or calling cabs for people who
needed them.
“We’re not trying to create lots
of church programs,” Early said. “I
want our people to serve this city.
We’re part of this city. ...We want to
be a gospel community of
worshipping and serving
theologians.”
All of the founding pastors
have done what they did with a
love for Jesus leading them. “We
aren’t competition for other Jesus-
loving, Bible-believing churches,”
McInnis reflected. When WellSpring
recently distributed invitations to
services, the fliers included the
names of about 20 other Senoia
area churches.
Connally said he hopes All
Souls can “be a beacon of hope and
refuge to the lost in Christ, and to
all mankind” and “minister not
only to the spiritual man, but also
to the physical as well, in meeting
the needs of the whole man.”
Difficulties are a part of church
life. “Challenges are great because
we get to see how God provides,”
McInnis said.
It is certain that more people
will be starting new churches in
Coweta County in the future. “There
will never be enough churches,”
Connally said, “to validate
anybody’s belief that ‘we already
have enough churches.’”
