Well, with the convening of the Republican’s “Party” in Florida, the 2012 Presidential race is now off

and running. The news media is doing a great job with their 24 hour coverage, analyzing every “word” being said by the two major political camps. However, even though I want to educate myself as to the plans each candidate has for pointing our country in a better direc-tion, all I seem to hear is what one candidate thinks the other is doing wrong. It’s called mudslinging and both parties need to wash their faces - and their hands, too. But I think there just may be a way the American voters can get to the truth. It’s a gadget called “The Nonparti-

san Lie Detecting Shock-O-Matic”. (As seen on TV)

During a special joint session of Congress, each member, upon entry, will have this small electronic device installed in the backside of his or her pants, allowing it to monitor the truthfulness of each statement and recorded for future refer-ence. Any false statements will be rewarded with a quick “posterior shock”, the se-verity of such depending upon the degree of the non-truth. (The candidates, you know, like to say, “I misspoke.”) At this discussion-debate, the honest politicians (?) will not be shocked, and the ones “trying, but lying” may be some-what uncomfortable. But the most egregious offenders will be “jumpin’ and shoutin’”, ”dancin’ and hollerin’”, the likes of which could be compared to one of those non-partician, non-donominational good ole’ fashion camp meeting re-vivals! And if they claim the device is malfunctioning, the shock will be even more severe. There will be so much slid-ing around and clapping of hands, the Marine band may need to strike up that old Louie Prima tune, “Jump, Jive an’ Whale”! And the scene will be such a display of repentance, the congressional pages will probably be moved to pass the hat and take up a collection. But the excitement will eventually pass, leaving the lobbyists to prepare and serve “dinner on the grounds” in the White House rose garden. And they will, of course, pick up the tab.

But, leaving the above levity aside, I’m looking forward to the time when our country’s leaders will make decisions based on what’s good for the future of our citizens and not so much the perpetuation of a political party. We are very fortu-nate to live in a country of opposing opinions, and both the liberal and conservative camps have some really good ideas. Perhaps they will, one day, quit name calling and combine the wisdom of each party to keep the United States of America the best place in the world to live.

JoePostscript: As always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help us make The Coweta Shopper an interesting and effective advertising medium.

Simple Updates That You Can Take With You

As home sellers trying to sell, one of the biggest concerns is to receive a large return on any investment made to the property. Making updates and upgrades to the property is usually a smart idea, such as upgrading counter tops, hardware and fixtures, because these updates will remain with the house once sold and the buyer will be able to move right in and start enjoying their home right away. These improvements increase the value of the property instantly, but what about other updates that the home seller can take with them to their new home? Below are a few suggestions:Welcome Mat & Entry Way Rug - First impression before crossing the threshold ... is your mat worn out and dirty? How about your entryway rug? Welcome mats and entry rugs are not huge investments and will make a tremendous difference in the first impression to a buyer.Bedding - Changing the bedding in the master bedrooms is a fast and easy update to make. Bed linens tend to hold odors and make a bedroom “feel” dingy. Choose linens that are light & airy, that will have a fresh feeling. They don’t have to be expensive, custom made linens; however, do take the time to press any new bedding that comes “out of the bag”.

Artwork - If your artwork is “all about you and your fam-ily” (family photos & portraits) investing in a few large pieces of wall art is a wise investment. Choices can be mirrors, ironwork or framed prints and they don’t have to be expensive. Some of the hottest trends today in wall art are Typography prints and are easy to duplicate for a Do It Yourself home seller.Bath Towels - Remember the “company towels” that your mother or grandmother never let you use? “Don’t use the towels in the powder room kids, those are for company!”. It’s time to bring them back ... no buyer wants to see

your daily shower towel or face cloth. Eeeew! Purchase some extra fluffy towels for the towel bars in your powder and bathrooms and hide the daily towels in the washing ma-chine or behind the closet door on a hook.Clothes Hamper - Again, no one wants to see a sellers dirty clothes either! Replace open plastic/wicker laundry baskets with a lidded hamper. Preferable an attractive wicker or bamboo one to give a natural spa feeling to the area.House Plants - We all have plants that struggle, get leggy, have dead leaves or outgrow their surroundings. This is a perfect time to send them to plant heaven and invest in new healthy plants to replace them. Hopefully they will stay alive until you get to your new home! For more about “moveable” updates for your property, contact Nan Johnston, Southern Staging & Redesign, nan@ southern-staging.com, www.southern-staging.com

The basic categories of classifications are: Bird’s Foot (ex. ‘Needlepoint’), Fan (ex. ‘Triton’), Curlies (ex. ‘Ivalace’), Variegated se-lections (ex. ‘Goldheart’, ‘Glacier’, ‘Dentata variegata’), Heart-shaped (ex. ‘Del-todia’ - also known as Sweetheart), Miniature (ex. ‘Midget’), Common Ivy (ex. ‘Hibernica’), and Odd Types (ex. ‘Erecta’).

Since ancient times ivies have been used in cel-ebrations, folklore, paintings, and gardening. It was said to symbolize fidelity and immortality. Ivy has long been much used in weddings and holds up very well in flower arrangements. It has many uses in gardens as: vertical interest, trailing hedge, ground cover, topiaries, hanging baskets, and trail-ing from pots and window boxes.

Growth requirements for ivy generally are moist, well-drained soil, high hu-midity, soil with a pH of 6 to 7, a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer. While ivy prefers shade or part shade, it can grow in sun. Once well established it can tolerate drought and pollution.

Ivy provides food, cover, and nesting for birds, butterflies, and insects. It is not poisonous to ani-mals in any of its parts. Only the seeds are slightly toxic to humans, but some few may have a slight allergic skin reaction to ivy. It is not a parasite. Ivy is an evergreen, woody, climbing plant. Ivy should not be grown up trees. It won’t harm the tree but could make it top heavy in high winds or block light to limbs. It is better grown on a trellis than a wall.

Do not confuse plants including the word ivy in their common names with true ivy. Some of these are:

Boston Ivy - Parthenocissus tricuspidata - de-• ciduousSwedish Ivy - Plectranthus oertendahlii - • house plantGrape Ivy - Cissus - tender, trailing house • plantDevil’s Ivy - Scindapsus aureus - Pothos• Poison Ivy - Rhus radicans - deciduous climber (may cause severe allergic • reactions - all parts)

Problems with ivies are usually few when grown outside. Inside plants suffer from lack of humidity. Give them a shower and let drain. Insecticidal soap can help with bad infestations of red spiders, mites, aphids. Leaf spot sometimes occurs.

Tree ivy is a mature adult ivy that has ceased climbing and taken on a shrub form. It will then flower every year and set seeds. This type of ivy is called ar-borescent.

Volunteers!

7345 Red Oak Rd., Union City • (770) 254-8612

How Do I Get Started? You may call the Volunteer Coordinator at (770) 254-8612 with any questions

or to request an application. Volunteers may choose to spend time with patients and their families within their own towns and communities and/or

anywhere within the 12 counties where we are licensed.

Lic# 240927

Volunteers play a vital role in the support of our pa-tients and their families. Support is given in many ways – sitting at bedside to relieve an exhausted caregiver, performing small tasks in the patient’s home, reading to a patient, or spending time with a patient and their family as a “friendly visitor”. No special skills are needed but a passion to serve others is desired.

Please call Mary at 678-817-4180 if you have ques-tions about our program or if you would like to at-tend volunteer training.
