Timothy Penfield remembersthe moment he decided toturn his life around. Serving alengthy prison sentence for, inhis words, “…just a lot of crime,”Penfield’s four children cameto visit him behind bars. Whenthey left, the Poughkeepsienative was overcome with theidea that he needed to be better,he had to do better for the sakeof his family.Timothy Penfield also

remembers the momentsomeone believed in him. Whileincarcerated, Penfield learnedtwo trades: metalworking andbarbering. However, with afelony conviction on his record,finding employment uponrelease was nearly impossible.Impossible until Norman Murleyof Apparatus Manufacturingstepped up. Murley gavePenfield a shot, and he’s neverlooked back.After losing his job at

Apparatus due to the recession,Penfield decided to applyhis work ethic and training toopening Sculpture Barber Shop(780 Main St., Poughkeepsie), a

sleek and modern space wherepeople can gather for not onlytheir latest haircut, but also,Penfield hopes, a chance to stayon the right path.Recognizing the mistakes

he’s made in his past, Penfield’smain goal is to give back to hiscommunity and help keep local

youth from repeating his errors.“Poughkeepsie is where I did mydirt, and this is where I need todo my clean-up,” he said. “It’sa lot worse out there than inmy day. It’s easy to make thewrong decision, but I’m trying toprevent that.”When Sculpture closes for

business, it opens for mentoring,a free program that Penfieldhas started for local youthages 16-18 to learn how to cuthair. Penfield also provides asympathetic ear, a safe spaceto complete homework andstay focused on school, andhopefully, a shot at a positivefuture.“It’s hard to balance, working

14 hours in the shop and thenanother three mentoring,”Penfield said, “But if I cankeep one kid from making themistakes I made, I’ll smile whenthey put me in the ground.”

As Thanksgiving approachesand visions of tables crowdedwith food dance throughthe heads of Hudson Valleyresidents, it’s important to keepin mind those that may befinancially incapable of providingfor their families this holidayseason.Due to the recent economic

downturn, more and morepeople are struggling to makeends meet, and that’s placinga strain on local food pantrieslike the one at the VineyardCommunity Church on Route 82in Hopewell Junction.Vineyard runs a “no-strings-

attached” operation that hashelped over 1,500 people inthe Hudson Valley, but they’re

finding it difficult to assisteveryone in need this season,and have seen their waiting listballoon to over 150.Vineyard’s food pantry is not

an emergency service. It hasthe resources to provide workingpoor families, often those thatare employed but can’t meet alltheir financial obligations, withfood for 5-7 days per month,which can allow them to pay rentor a doctor’s bill. But growingdemand and dwindling supplyhave begun to take their toll.Anyone wishing to make a

donation to Vineyard’s foodpantry can bring non-perishablefood items to drop off duringregular business hours, Tuesdaythrough Friday from 9 a.m. until

4 p.m.Monetary donations are

also accepted and often go along way, as the food pantryreceives significant discountswhen purchasing from area foodbanks.Furthermore, Vineyard is

always seeking local businessesor organizations willing to hold afood drive or a personal hygienedrive. The latter seeks itemslike toothpaste, toilet paper anddeodorant – things that foodstamps do not cover – and areespecially needed.For more information about

After graduation,she worked with adults withdevelopmentally disabilities,and from there became involvedwith seniors. She has alwaysbeen a person who believes incommunity, helping others, andteaching youngsters how to grow,volunteering with Ulster CountyCouncil of Girl Scouts and alsowith the American Red Crossas a certified CPR and First AidInstructor.Irene has been recognized for

providing successful incentives andincreasing residents in challengedhomes, resulting in $2M profit inone community and in anotherchallenged community increasedcensus by one third within 8months. She has also writtennumerous successful grants forVassar-Warner, receiving about$215,000 to date.

Maureen CrushMaureen Crush is a partner at

Rider, Weiner & Frankel, P.C., inWappingers Falls and New Windsor.She received her B.S. in accountingfrom New York University andher J.D. from Fordham UniversitySchool of Law where she wasEditor-in-Chief of the MootCourt Board. MarcineHumphrey

Marcine Humphrey is founderand director of Live Your Dream,an annual empowerment conferencefor seventh-grade girls. She joinedthe Peace Corps after one year ofteaching, and as a result becamea world citizen and a communityactivist. For 27 years Marcinetaught high school English,Journalism, Creative Writing andCommunications. In 1997 she wasselected as a New York State Teacherof Excellence by the New York StateEnglish Council. During her career,she participated in programs thatencouraged young people to seethe world beyond the classroom.She advised the Leo CommunityService Club and worked on severalcharacter education initiatives in herdistrict.Marcine has continued to follow

her passion -- improving the livesof girls and women. Membershipin the American Association ofUniversity Women has given hermany opportunities to empowergirls and promote equity forwomen. Marcine coordinates theAAUW “Live Your Dream Girls’Conference”, which promotes self-confidence, strength and sisterhood.As member of the AdvisoryBoard of the Girls’ LeadershipWorkshop, she helps prepare youngwomen for future positions ofleadership, using the example setby Eleanor Roosevelt. Marcine is afounding member of the DutchessGirls Collaborative designed toempower, encourage and supportgirls in Dutchess County througha collaborative network ofinformation and programs.

May MamiyaMay Mamiya is currently

Director of the Case ManagementDepartment at Vassar Brother’sMedical Center. In this capacity, shehas mentored scores of professionalstaff and many more interns fromarea colleges and graduate social-work schools. Her responsibilitiesat the hospital provided her theopportunity to identify areas ofspecial need related to the homeless,the uninsured, persons with HIV/AIDS, and the critically andterminally ill. These concernsprompted active involvementin groups such as Hudson RiverHousing, the Dutchess AIDSConsortium, Hospice andprofessional advocacy committees ofthe National Association of SocialWorkers and the American CaseManagement Association.May’s educational focus and

professional work sparked aninterest in bioethics, and shecompleted a certificate programin bioethics and the medicalhumanities at Columbia University’sCollege of Physician and Surgeons/Montefiore Medical Center.She applied these skills as staff-support person for VBMC’s EthicsCommittee and as leader of itsadvance-care planning initiative.Since 1975 May has been an

enthusiastic promoter of this region’shistory, geography and traditions.Her work in the community hasprovided proof of Pete Seeger’s song:“Step by step, the longest march canbe done; many stones to form anarch, singly none, singly none…”

Nancy O’DonnellNancy O’Donnell has worked

tirelessly for more than a decadein her profession as a clinicalpsychologist on the team runningthe Women and Children’sprogram at the Dutchess CountyDepartment of Mental HygieneClinic for Substance Abuse.Her clinical skills and personalcommitment to improving the livesof the women afflicted by the diseaseof addiction helped many of themto begin and continue the longand arduous journey to recovery.She demonstrated initiative andcreativity in starting special grouptherapy programs for women whohad been sexually abused as childrenand for children growing up withparents suffering from addictions.She has given workshops locally onhow to set up and run groups forchildren of alcoholics and substanceabusers.Most recently, she worked at

St. Christopher’s Inn as the firstpsychologist at the institutionworking with homeless menwith the disease of addiction.Dr. O’Donnell is also an adjunctprofessor of psychology at MaristCollege and recently developeda new course on the Psychologyof Women. And she has beena member of the internationalFocolare Movement since 1969, andhas served in numerous leadershiproles, including working with theDutchess Interfaith Council on avariety of programs and activities.She is presently assistant to thedirector of the Focolare for the U.S.east coast region.

Caryn SolomonCaryn Solomon is the Clinical

Coordinator at Hudson ValleyCenter for Ambulatory Surgery atSaint Francis. She graduated fromSUNY Downstate Medical Centerwith a Bachelor’s Degree in nursingin 1979, and she worked as a nurseuntil the birth of twin boys. Whilevolunteering as a room mother inone of her son’s classrooms, a teacherencouraged her to return to schoolto get her teacher’s certification. In1990 she completed the necessaryclasses at Vassar College to be acertified teacher in New York State.She then taught first grade for sixyears at a local private school.She returned to nursing full time

at Saint Francis Hospital in 1998with three classes left to completeher Masters in EducationalPsychology at Marist College.The ability to combine her skillsas a Registered Nurse with thoseas an Educator has given her theopportunity to mentor new nursesand students from our community.Mothering, nursing, educating

and helping others is who Carynis, and she’s thankful for the roadstraveled to get her where she istoday.

Cathy VarunokCathy Varunok is the co-founder

of the Miles of Hope BreastCancer Foundation. She has beenan Occupational Therapist for27 years, receiving her Bachelor’sdegree in Occupational Therapyfrom SUNY Downstate MedicalCenter and her Master’s Degreein Humanistic and MulticulturalEducation from SUNY NewPaltz. Cathy has worked in manyareas of rehabilitation, but forthe last 10 years has workedexclusively with people with cancer.Cathy is a certified lymphedematherapist and a certified Focuson Healing Through Dance andMovement instructor, which isa therapeutic dance and exerciseprogram for people with Cancer.Since April 2011, Cathy has beenthe Coordinator of OncologyRehabilitation Services for HealthQuest.Nineteen years ago, Cathy began

her advocacy work for breast cancer,after her sister, Betty, passed awayand her mother was treated for thedisease. She started in communitywalks for national organizationslogging hundreds of miles for breastcancer. It was on one of these walksthat Cathy met Dana Effron. In2003, Cathy and Dana startedthe Miles of Hope Breast CancerFoundation which is a not-for-profitorganization providing supportservices for people residing in theHudson Valley dealing with breastcancer. It is a service of love fromwhich she receives great joy andsatisfaction.

ATHENA AdultScholarship

All proceeds from the 2011ATHENA programs benefit TheChamber Foundation’s ATHENAAdult Scholarship.Established by the Dutchess

County Regional Chamber ofCommerce to encourage increasedleadership roles for women inour community, this scholarshipis available to any female wholives, works or volunteers inDutchess County, has been outof high school for at least fiveyears, and is pursuing educationat an accredited Mid-HudsonValley College, University or tradeschool or through an accreditedonline educational program whilemaintaining residency in DutchessCounty. (Mid-Hudson is definedas Columbia, Dutchess, Greene,Orange and Ulster counties.) Theminimum scholarship award is$1,000. Dutchess Class of 2012attended their first session:“Team Building” at Sharpe

Reservation. Chris Short, a2007 Leadership DutchessGraduate, author, speakerand skills-workshop facilitator,facilitated the workshop. Duringthe workshop, participantswere able to look at options forassessing their own style andthe styles of their teammates. Bythe end of the morning session,the class was ready to apply thetools that they had learned inpreparation for the afternoon’sactivity on the” low ropes”course.Sharpe features two separate

challenge courses containing avariety of low-ropes elements.

These elements are designedto encourage groups to worktogether as a team in a positiveand creative social environment.At the end of the low-ropessession, the class was able tofunction outside of their comfortzone, express their ideas andwork together as a team to findsolutions.Special thanks to EmbroidMe

Both KarolynOsborne and the committee trulywork to manage the program,and take constructive criticism

of Leadership DutchessCommittee this year. Whatother organizations are youinvolved with that you canattribute to your involvementwith Leadership Dutchess?I am currently on the Board

of Directors forthe Mid-HudsonChildren’sMuseum andhave been for4 years. I alsoparticipate onthe ExecutiveCommittee andthe Finance

Committee. Iwas also selected last year(2010) to sit on the ChamberFoundation Board. This wasa great opportunity because Ihad the chance to go througha Board merger, which wasa unique opportunity. Both of thesehave introduced me to the worldof Non-Profits and I have metsome wonderful people andmade some lasting friendshipsthrough both.
