Rachel Hotston Landscape Architecture and Garden DesignCreating functional and beautiful landscapes for private gardens and commercial projects.
I offer a versatile design service specifically tailored to clients from government, local communities and charitable sectors as well as businesses and private clients with gardens of all sizes. I develop projects at concept and detailed design level through to preparation of works specification and contract administration for implementation.
I am a Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute with over 19 years experience.
Project Profile: Thames Hospice Sanctuary Garden
It is universally recognised that restorative gardens have a beneficial effect on mental and physical well being. As such, it was a great honour to design the Sanctuary Garden for Thames Hospice in Windsor completed last year.
I designed the Sanctuary Garden to provide solace and hope, bringing peace and comfort for patients, their visitors and staff during a time of grief and deep emotion. I wanted it to be a place for shared memories and stories enabling new memories to be created together by the living and the dying.
It was important for me that the garden met the varied needs of its users. For some it would be reflection and prayer, for others the space to
manage intense and overwhelming emotions. The garden creates a connection with home using familiar plants and natural elements. It is a comfortable, fragrant, beautiful place that uses plants to mark the seasons and it is a place for celebrating individual lives and memories.
I created a circular route into the heart of the garden, providing space for reflection and acknowledgment of the user’s spiritual and physical journey. I also included a variety of spaces and seating for privacy and group gatherings, for wheelchairs and beds. The beautiful lines and natural stone, complemented by a constantly changing tapestry of trees, are used to provide unique views from every angle.
Because the garden will be used all year round, I selected trees for vibrant and autumnal colour and for spring flowers and foliage. Shrubs, grasses and perennials have been woven together to create an intricate composition, balancing texture, form, colour, size, sound and scent complimenting the natural stone elements. Even in the quietest moments of winter and early spring, bulbs are waiting to herald the successional colour to follow.
Sculpture, trees and water create focal points and lead the user through the space. The presence of water provides visual and aural space for reflection, tranquillity and meditation. The gently bubbling fountains and water blades bring a soothing and calming quality to the garden.

Community First RespondersA big thank you to our guest presenters at our October meeting Liz Felix and David Hamer. The topic was the Community First Responders (CFRs) scheme.

What criteria do you need to meet in order to be a volunteer:
• Physically fit and healthy
• Able to carry out effective CPR for up to 20 minutes (after training)
• Over the age of 18
• A car owner with a full driving license
• Prepared to have a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check

The Henley Living Advent Calendar
The Henley Living Advent Calendar returns for its 5th year in December. Started by the then chair of Henley Business Partnership, Julie Perigo in 2011, the Partnership continues to support the event which is the collaborative effort of over 100 local businesses and community groups.
Now firmly part of the Henley calendar of festivals and events, it serves to make Henley-on-Thames even more of a place to visit in the winter as well as summer.
A free surprise festive 30-minute performance takes place over some festive nibbles at 6.15pm at a different iconic Henley venue each night, and local businesses get involved hosting evenings or partnering with host venues to help put on that night’s performance. Venues this year include Boatique, The Bull on Bell Street, Simmons & Son, Hotel du Vin and Angel on the Bridge. Partners include the Cookcurry Club, Niki Schäfer Interior Designs, Philip Booth Esq and Strada. Performances in 2014 ranged from a Robbie
Williams tribute act to the choir of St Mary’s, via some acoustic bands, cabaret, dramatic performances, dance troupes and more in between.
A winner of a Towns Alive award and one of the Government’s Big Society awards, the event promises to raise more money for more charities than ever before this year, with a different cause being showcased and collected for each night.
3FM Breakfast Meeting8.30-9.30am at Strada, 49-51 Bell Street, Henley-on-Thames, Oxon RG9 2BG £6 for attendance and breakfast
Guest Presenter
Heidi Strickland-Clark Fast Track Fit Camp
The aim of the 3FM group is to network, promote business opportunities, catch up with existing partners and forge new alliances.
The group is a networking club, by the members for the members – there are no franchise fees to be paid or rules and restrictions. We take the best practice from other networking groups and
clubs and ditch the rest to leave what we hope is a friendly, co-operative and exciting business generator for our members.
Membership is open to all including many from the same trade in what we believe is an abundant market where people buy from who they know, like and trust.
So if you want to more about your market, meet key players, network and reference your services, you are invited to come along on a trial basis for two meetings. Following that you will be asked to join the Henley Business Partnership for participation in future meetings.

Every piece of training, coaching and mentoring we deliver is linked to our clients’ specific business objectives. To achieve this we only deliver to small groups of business owners and teams, or work 1-2-1. No ‘one size fits all’ solutions.
Unlike other business training companies we help you with both the practical and mental challenges of implementing the changes required.
Friends of Mohawk RelaunchWe are delighted to announce that new Trustee Chris Stillman has very kindly agreed to take over as Chair of the Friends.
The Friends have recently been less active but we are now looking to relaunch with a new team and hopefully lot’s of new ideas. To this end anyone who thinks they might be interested in finding out more are cordially invited to visit Mohawk for an informal, brain storming session. The time and date is 6pm Wednesday 25 November and please email me on keith@countydouglas.co.uk if you have any questions and/or you would like to come along.
Our simple objective is to support the Mohawk team of staff and volunteers. This can include a wide variety of options but I guess fund-raising will always be a major topic.
Our new Centre Manager Chris Wilcox, has kindly offered to light a campfire for us and supply marshmallows and cups of tea!
Support your High Street over the Festive seasonHootenanny! Henley Town Council has taken on board feedback from local retailers and will be complementing the Christmas Festival on Friday 4 December with a special Sunday shopping event: The Henley High-Street Hootenanny on Sunday 6 December.
From Reading Road to Riverside, many of those shops usually closed will be joining those who already do Sunday opening for a day of special offers, family fun, pop-up performances – and there are rumours that Santa himself will be paying a visit to all good shopkeepers!
“We’ve been speaking to as many local retailers as we can and the consensus was that while everyone loves the buzz of the Christmas Festival,
Henley’s own shops can get a bit overshadowed on the night,” explained Paula Price-Davies, HTC event and project co-ordinator. “The suggestion of a special Sunday opening got a great response and we are looking forward to making a real weekend of it, reminding both residents and visitors that you need look no further than Henley for your Christmas shopping.”
Musical performances, storytellings and demos will be scheduled throughout the day either inside or close to shops in areas including Bell Street, Friday Street, Hart Street and Reading Road, rather than focusing on Market Place. Many stores will be offering special promotions for the day, as well as festive snacks and drinks. And the fun will continue into the evening, with a Living Advent Calendar event at Phyllis Court and a ‘Gospel Elvis’ charity concert at Christ Church.

Henley in Bloom gets gold! After a three year campaign and two silver gilt awards, Henley in Bloom achieved a gold award in the national finals of the Britain in Bloom competition.
Alongside the national gold, Henley have been awarded a silver plaque by Entente Florale (the largest horticultural competition in the world) when representing the UK, and another gold award with a discretionary award for best business involvement by Thames and Chilterns in Bloom.
2015 was a bumper year for Henley in Bloom. No other Bloom group has ever attempted entry into all three tiers of the competitions at the same
time. Making the most of the Royal Horticultural Society’s theme, Greener Streets, Better Lives, Henley in Bloom worked hard to maintain previous areas of achievement as well as creating new projects. Popular projects this year have included the Henley Standard Roundabout on Reading Road, The Green Wall at Mill Meadows and introduction of air quality improving trees throughout the town.
Residents, businesses, community groups and the local authorities have given thousands of hours and pounds into making and keeping Henley the most beautiful and attractive place to live and work and the whole town should be proud of the recognition Henley has received due to their commitment, dedication and vision. It’s evident throughout Henley that the people here care about their town, not just horticulturally, but the heritage, art, community participation and civic pride too.
Well done Henley!
I would like to personally thank you for your involvement in our campaigns. Without people like yourself taking an interest and actively supporting Henley in Bloom, none of the work we do would be possible. You have been instrumental in our success and I hope you are celebrating this massive achievement with us.

We believe there is a better way to deliver homecare. For us, care and companionship go hand-in-hand in visits that last a minimum of one hour. We believe quality care can’t be delivered in less.
At its best, we think homecare is delivered by people who feel valued and respected and part of a bigger mission. We couldn’t deliver excellent homecare without our CAREGivers. They are the backbone of our care model and recruited for their empathy and compassion.
Independent research carried out in 2015 has endorsed the difference we are making to the lives of both our clients and our CAREGivers every day. We surveyed 4,092 clients and 4,101 CAREGivers across the UK for their views.
