“We all know that leaders need vision and energy. But to be inspirational, leaders need four other qualities. Probably not what you’d expect, these qualities can be honed by almost anyone willing to dig deeply into their true selves.”

Harvard Business Review, Why Should Anyone be Led by You? Rob Goffee and Gareth Jones

Four qualities of inspirational leaders

Inspirational leaders selectively show their weaknesses It’s okay to expose some vulnerability

1. Show weaknesses

Four qualities of inspirational leaders

Inspirational leaders rely heavily on intuition to gauge the appropriate timing and course of actions

Your ability to collect and interpret soft data helps you know just when and how to act

2. Use Intuition

Four qualities of inspirational leaders

Inspirational leaders manage employees with tough empathy

They empathise passionately – and realistically – with people, and they care intensely about the work people do

3. Use Tough Empathy

Four qualities of inspirational leaders

 Inspirational leaders reveal their differences

They capitalise on what’s unique about themselves and others

4. Capitalise on differences

AUTHENTIC  LEADERSHIP

Authentic leadership

To be authentic, each of us has to develop our own leadership style, consistent with our own personality and character.

Dimensions of Authentic leadership

1.  Understanding your purpose

2.  Practicing solid values 3.  Establishing connected

relationships 4.  Demonstrating self-

discipline 5.  Leading with heart

1.  Authentic leaders have insight. While leaders must have vision, they need more. They need wisdom and discernment.

2.  Authentic leaders demonstrate initiative. They go first. They don’t sit on the sidelines. They lead by example.

3.  Authentic leaders exert influence. People are drawn to their vision and their values.

4. Authentic leaders have impact. They are able to create real and lasting change. 5. Authentic leaders exercise integrity. Integrity—or the lack thereof—ultimately determines the quality of a person’s impact.

Do these attributes mark your leadership? Where can you

improve?

UNDERSTANDING  YOUR  PURPOSE  AUTHENTIC  LEADERSHIP

Your Leadership Emerges from Your Life Story §  People attach insights to their life experiences §  When people tell life stories they gain clarity

about who they are

PRACTICING  SOLID  VALUES

Richard Barrett creates a compelling narrative about why values-driven organisations are the most successful organisations on the planet. Understanding what you and people value—is the key to creating a high performing organisation. When you support people in satisfying their needs, they respond with high levels of engagement and willingly bring their commitment and creativity to their work.

VALUES  Values are deeply held views about what is important.

They represent the things that really matter to an individual and/or company

 What  dis=nguishes  great  leaders  from

merely  good  ones?

It  isn't  IQ  or  technical  skills,  says  Daniel  Goleman.  It's  emo@onal  intelligence:  a  group  of  five  skills  that  enable  the  best  leaders  to  maximize  their  own  and  their  followers'  performance.

EQ  is  more  important  than  IQ  in  predic@ng  the  future  success  of  a  person.

ADAPTIVE  LEADERSHIP  LEADERSHIP  STYLES

Harvard University - Ronald Heifetz

Adaptive Leadership is purposeful evolution in real time

Adaptive Leadership is knowing how to:

ü  Lead in times of crisis and chaos

ü  Lead when you don’t completely understand the problem (let alone the solution!)

ü  Lead change when faced with uncertainty and resistance

ü  Face challenges when there are no obvious answers

How adaptive is your organisation?

Thinking and leading like a futurist is not about having access to a crystal ball, or about coming up with wild projections about the future. It is about being able to spot the trends that are already shaping the world, and confidently predict how these will create threats and opportunities, within the next business planning cycle.

What is one thing you’ve learned today that you can adapt to your leadership

role? How will you do it? Why is it important?
