What is LEAP?• The LEAP test is given to all 4th and 8th

graders to see how well they have mastered the state content standards.

• Students are tested in all major subject areas—Math, ELA, Science, and Social Studies.

• Each test will receive one of 5 achievement labels:

Advanced Mastery

Basic Approaching Basic

Unsatisfactory

Promotion Requirements

Students must score a minimum combination of Approaching Basic and Basic (or higher) in Math and ELA.

How can parents help?

1. Set aside time every day for your child to do homework. Review your child’s homework.

2. Set up a designated area for your child to study. Have supplies ready that your child may need.

3.Remember to look at your calendar and not schedule any vacation during testing time. This could cause your child to receive a ZERO on the test.

This year the test will be given:

4. Always display a positive attitude about the LEAP test. Help your child understand that tests are a part of school life.

5. It is normal to have some nervousness. Encourage your child to stay relaxed and calm during the LEAP tests. If your child gets nervous about tests, give him or her ideas or ways to stay calm.If I get nervous during the

test, I can:1. take a few slow, deep breaths2. close my eyes and count to three3. remind myself that I will do fine if I try my best

6. Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and eats a light, healthy breakfast just as he or she normally would before the LEAP test but

not too much to eat!!!

I feel sleepy. I think I ate too much!

7. Remind your child to bring his or her glasses to school on all of the testing days.

8. If your child takes medicine, make sure he/she gets it each morning of the test. Forgetting could cause your child to do poorly.

9. Try to bring your child to school even if he/she is not feeling well. You can always pick him/her up after testing, if necessary.

10.Encourage your child to try hard and do his or her best everyday in school.

11. Act normally! This will help keep students anxieties from becoming overwhelming.

11. Help your child keep the test in perspective. It’s one indication of student achievement– not the measure by how we determine whether or not your child is worthy.

12. Be your child’s number one achievement cheerleader!!!

A practice test will be used prior to the LEAP test in class.

One writing prompt has been sent to the state department and graded. Another writing prompt will be sent within the month.
