In a red brick building deep in the vast rolling landscape that is the Lincolnshire Wolds, Alfred Tennyson and his family once lived. It was a place that was to give him the foundations to produce literaturature which would be enjoyed and studied by people all over the world. Within this landscape, I have proposed to situate a writer’s retreat.

The programme will be offering peo-ple time and space. In eye-catching countryside, with expert tuition from leading authors and the support of other like-minded writers, the studying writers can feed their imagination and let their stories flourish. It will be an annual programme of residential cours-es for individuals, groups and schools at the retreat in Lincolnshire. The pur-pose of the retreat is to offer you more than a course. The design and location will cultivate the ideal environment for your creativity to thrive.

Lord Tennyson began writing poems at the age of eight and many think this is partly due to him being brought up in one of the most serene places of natu-ral beauty in Britain. Parts of country-side in Somersby (Tennyson’s childhood village) are known to have inspired poems of his such as “The Brook” and “Harrington Hall”.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Detail Section showing how the north-facing facade sits with the grass roof

The whole structure is sunken with-in the valley, so that the walls of the valley provide natural protection against the typical strong winds of the Lincolnshire Wolds. The roof therefor is primarily grass/vegetation, so that the building is a continuation of the grass slope, maintaining the natural focus of the view down the valley.

ARCH ‘The Precipice Of Change’

This project is situated in the town of Ingoldmells, which is a coastal town just North of Skegness. This once bustling, attractive seaside resort used to be the leading tourist destination in Britain.

The objective of the project is to promote the cultural qualities of the site, which will help re-establish a foothold in tourism.

Alfred Tennyson, once poet laureate of Britain, had a deep connection with the Lincolnshire Coastline. He used to walk up and down, sometimes with his brother, going over poems in his head. The form and context of the design is inspired by one of his poems that he wrote.

The tower itself acts as an archive, giving the public access to Tennyson’s own library and family libraries (which are currently held in Louth), in a setting by the sea with a constantly changing environment.

‘I Stood On A Tower’

I stood on a tower in the wet,And New Year and Old Year met,And winds were roaring and blowing; And I said, ‘O years, that meet in tears,Have you all that is worth the knowing?Science enough and exploring,Wanderers coming and going,Matter enough for deploring,But aught that is worth the knowing?Seas at my feet were flowing.Waves on the shingle pouring,Old year roaring and blowing,And New Year blowing and roaring.

- Lord Alfred Tennyson

POEM ANALYSIS

‘I Stood on a Tower’ places the narrator in the midst of a significant transition, in both a real and symbolic sense. From his vantage point, the speaker ob-serves nature’s motions as time moves on and ponders the mean-ing and significance of humanity’s intellectual and spiritual endeav-ours. The work was itself written upon a New Year’s Eve and re-flects the writer’s thoughts during this time as well as the common Victorian artistic debate between science and faith. The closing two lines especially appeal to me as they are meant to leave you in transitional precipice, between the experiences of the past and those which are to come, and this I feel relates to the precipice of poetry, and also the coastal town of Ingoldmells.

OBJECTIVES

To create an experience that is of constant change, whether it be in-duced by movement through the spaces, or by the encompassing of the tide.

To give a greater sense of sercu-rity to the user. This perception of peace is not only achieved through thick walls, but that inner faith in a higher power. This was a firm belief by the Tennyson family.

To offer a place of calm that is encircled by chaos.

ARCHITECTURAL INTENT

The tower is to be made up of a variety of different spaces that project a different perception on the changing context of the location. From extreme light to extreme darkness, from narrow to wide open, from harsh cold to serene warmth, the various experices will coalesce to give people a realisation of the preci-pice of change.

To follow a Brutalist theme that acts in direct relation to the con-text on which the tower will sit.

The ideas that form the facade of the tower raise some intriguing questions of representation. On the one hand, it has a figurative presence, as typical in an architectural design based on a poetic narrative, while on the other hand, it has a performance related to the behavior of the sea. The result stands for how the architecture is occupied and changed by the sea, which in turn prints memories onto the metal and concrete flesh.

Located on the outskirts of Manches-ter is Manchester City Airport, or more widely known as Barton Aero-drome. It is one of the more popular aerodromes in the country attracting thousands of visitors each year due to it’s attractive airshows that oc-cur every month. It is also home to several listed buildings such as the old plane hanger and control tower which were both relied on heavily during the second world war.

I have proposed a design of an aer-autic facility where people can come and learn about the building of small aircraft in an environment speifically designed to do so.

WORK IN PRACTICE

FARRELLSFINE ARCHITECTURE

ARCH FARRELLS

Sir Terry FarrellLondon

I worked at Farrells from October 2014 to September 2015 as an archi-tectural assistant.

The projects that I worked on were Earl’s Court Masterplan, University of Kent Masterplan and a station in Paris. On these projects I worked on the CAD drawings, using primarily AutoCad and Revit. I also worked on drafting reports, model develop-ment, conceptual development, and was involved in client discussions.

The Earls Court site is a huge tract of land covering 77 acres on the west-ern edge of central London. It spans the boundaries of the boroughs of Hammersmith & Fulham and Kens-ington & Chelsea and its borders run along Warwick Road to the east, Lillie Road to the south, North End Road to the west and West Cromwell Road (the A4) to the north.

The entire area around the Exhibition Centre in Earl’s Court is to be rede-veloped. The site is an isolated area to the rear of the exhibition building, a vast 28 hectares of under-utilised land in a high-value location. The exhibition centre forms part of the ‘Valley of the Giants’ - a string of vast industrial, institutional and trans-port complexes along the previously industrialised ‘lost river’, in an area that is well connected to central Lon-don and the A4/M4. Through routes are currently non-existent and there is very little connection to the sur-rounding urban area. The exhibition venue has been in decline over the past few years as bigger and better venues have opened in East London.

ARCH FINE Architecture

During the summer of 2012 I did an internship at Fine Architecture. At this relatively small practice I pri-marily worked on the 3D drawings and visuals for a luxury barbers in Doha, Qatar. I also was involved with discussions with the client and site visits/analysis of the construction process.

A smaller project that I worked on was the restoration of a gentlemen’s club in London called The Bucks Club.
