Initial information on site selection for Uganda pig value chain projects

More Pork by and for the Poor Project Inception and Planning Workshop, Mukono, Uganda, 27-28 May 2014
Site selection• Selection of potential sites for:
– CGIAR Research Program on Livestock and Fish.– Irish Aid funded Uganda smallholder pig project.
• ProcessStep 1: Geographical targeting using GIS characterization.Step 2: Stakeholder consultation of step 1 and definition of “soft” criteria.Step 3: Minimum checklist to gather data for more specific site selection (counties and sub-counties).Step 4: Analysis of steps 1-3 and final site selection.
• What is your contribution to this process?– Help us identify other non-GIS criteria for site selection (local knowledge).– Confirm whether the potential sites (GIS-characterisation and soft criteria
) are appropriate.
GIS Characterization • Based on 2 basic criteria:– Pig population density– Poverty levels
• Targets 3 types of pig value chains:Rural – urbanPeri-urban - urbanRural – rural Largely determined by market accessibility.

Where are the poor?

Pork consumptionMost of the pig meat consumption is in the urban areas

Target sites
Travel time (hrs) to nearest city with more than 50,000 persons
Market access

Activity• Define the “soft criteria” for site selection.• Propose list of eligible sites for the pig VC
matching with agreed criteria (soft criteria and spatial analysis).
Next steps
• Site scoping visits by end of June 2014.• Adaptation and implementation of toolkit for Rapid
Value Chain Assessment (VCA) ready by end June 2014.
• Conclusions on project sites – mid July
• Baseline and diagnostic surveys at selected project
sites: Aug – Sept 2014.
