The purpose of Frambu’s summer camps • To offer holiday experiences in a safe and inclusive
environment with the purpose to use these gained experiences in their leisure time back home
• To be an arena offering learning opportunities and experiences to better cope with, and overcome some of the challenges related with everyday life
• The main goals for the participants are to meet others in the same situation as themselves, exchange experiences and to connect to social networks

Who is participating?
• Children, youths and young adults with rare disorders – Without parents, caregivers or assistants
• 75% of these having Frambu as their competence service centre – The rest is from other Norwegian competance services
– Camp 1 (2 weeks) – 50 participants 10 - 16 years
– Camp 2 (2 weeks) – 50 participants 16 - 30 years
– Camp 3 (2 weeks) – 50 participants 14 - 20 years
– Camp 4 (1 week) – 30 participants 18 – 35 years

The camps are popular for both people with and without a rare disorder!
• 320 applicants for the job as camp assistant: 30% new applicants og 70% with camp experience – Mostly young students
– Frambu has engaged a person to
employ the staff
• 323 applications for participating
in total – relatively evenly distributed
through the four camps

Some of our challenges
• Finding the balance in how much we as professionals get involved – we want the camps to ”live their own lives” to the greatest extend
• Finding the balance in how many youths which can participate at each camp
• Be able to adapt to each individual’s
needs
• To do deliberate decisions when we
choose out the participants
- finding the right group composition

Why does it work so well?
• Through many years of organizing summer camps, Frambu has developed a certain “camp culture” that is passed on from one year to another
• We try to perserve this camp
culture by finding the
appropriate balance of
experienced and new camp
workers, making new assistants
assimilate quickly
