MovingForwardwithRemoteSupervision

Lastyear,theVDHAHouseofDelegatesvotedonthedefinitionofremotesupervision.Thedefinitionwehaveaddedtoourglossarystates:Remotesupervision–Adentisthasperiodiccommunicationwithadentalhygienistregardingpatientcare.Thedentistshallnotberequiredtohavepreviouslyexaminedthepatientandneednotbepresentwhenthedentalhygieneservicesareprovided.Thisinternalpolicychangewaspartofaprocesstowardworkingonpro-activelegislationtoexpandhowandwhereDentalHygienistsmaypracticeunderRemoteSupervision.WorkingwithVDAovermanymonths,VDHAcametoaconsensustoinitiatearemotesupervisionbill,whichpassedunanimouslythroughtheentirelegislativeprocess.TheGovernorsignedSB712onMarch25th2016.Readthefullbillhere:http://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?161+ful+CHAP0497Iwillsharesomeexcerptsfromthebill:Adentalhygienistshallonlypracticeunderremotesupervisionatacommunityhealthcenter,charitablesafetynetfacility,freeclinic,long-termcarefacility,elementaryorsecondaryschool,HeadStartprogram,orwomen,infants,andchildrenprogram.Whilethisstepforwardhasclearlimitationsonsitesofservice,ourbeliefisthatthiswillopenupaccesstocareformoreVirginians.Wehopethatsomenew,innovativeagreementsbetweendentists,hygienists,andotherstakeholderswilltakeplaceasaresultofthisbill.

President’sMessage(continued)Thebillalsostates:Afterconductinganinitialoralassessmentofapatient,adentalhygienistpracticingunderremotesupervisionshallconsultwiththesupervisingdentistpriortoprovidingfurtherdentalhygieneservicesifsuchpatientismedicallycompromisedorhasperiodontaldisease.Thiswasoneofthemorerestrictiveportionsofthebill.Wewillbeworkinghardtomakethismorefeasibleandunderstandableforallwhowishtopracticeunderremotesupervision.AsaresultofquestionsfromVDHAmembers,wehavealreadyhadapositivedialoguewiththeVDAabouthowtoclarifythissection.Ifhygienistsoutthereareinterestedinworkinginafreeclinic,longtermcarefacility,oranyplaceoutlinedinthebillpleasetakethetimetoreviewthisbillandseehowitmightworkforyouandyouremployerdentist.VDHAleadershipiseagertohearaboutcreativeapproachesandbestpracticesthatwecanshareandduplicate.WewillcontinueoureffortstomakethisnewlawworkbetterandcontinuetoremoveroadblockstooralhealthcareforallpeopleofVirginia.WeappreciatethesupportofourmembersandstakeholderpartnersasweadvanceworkableimprovementstoVirginia’slawsandregulations.SusanReid-Carr,BS,RDHPresidentVDHA

Dentalprovidershaveauniqueopportunitytoaddresstheirpatients’comprehensivehealthcareneedsbyintegratingclinicalservicesintothedentalpractice.Servicessuchasdiabetesandbloodpressurescreeningandsubstanceabuseidentificationcanimprovepatientwellnessandunderscoretherelationshipbetweenoralhealthandoverallhealth.Dentalhygienistsareparticularlypoisedtoimprovepublichealthandprovideoralhealtheducation,duetotheirstrongbackgroundinhealthprotection,diseasepreventionandhealthpromotion.Healthprovidersfrommultipledisciplinesoutsideofdentistrycandeliveroralhealthservices,educationandreferralsinmostcaresettingsaswell.Integratingoralhealthintoallaspectsofhealthcarecanexpandaccesstooralhealthservicesandenhancecomprehensivecare.Inmanyinstances,oralhealthserviceslikefluoridevarnishapplicationandoralhealthassessmentsarereimbursable.Inallinstances,integratingoralhealthandclinicalservicessupportscollaborativecareandwhole-bodyhealth.TheVirginiaOralHealthCoalition(VaOHC)hasputtogetheranewresourcefordentalandmedicalproviderswhoareinterestedinintegratingoralhealthandclinicalservices:theIntegrationToolkit.ThetoolkitishostedonVaOHCwebsiteandisaccessiblefromtheirhomepage(www.vaoralhealth.org).

TheIntegrationToolkitisanonlineresourcethatwalksyouthroughkeystepsofintegration,fromidentifyingyourpatients’majorhealthcareneedstoanalyzingfinancialmodels,andmore.Thetoolkitincludes:

• Sampleoralhealthintegrationmodels;• Promptquestionstoconsiderwithyourteam;• Clinicalpracticetoolsforthedentaloffice;and,• Continuingeducationopportunitiesfordentalandmedicalproviders.

PeninsulaDHA07PDHATrustee,MargeGreenThemonthlyCEtopicswellreceivedbybothstudentandpracticingdentalhygienistsencompassedtheinnovativeapplicationsofxylitolasaneffectiveapproachfortotalhealth,revisitingthepositiveoutcomesofnon-surgicalperiodontaltherapycontingentuponpatientcompliance,andahandsonexperiencewithlasersenablingevidencebaseddecisionmakingforone’sfutureutilizationinsofttissuemanagementwere.ConductingtheFebruaryCEonthestudents’turfatThomasNelsonCommunityCollege(TNCC)allowedthemtoproudlyleadatouroftheirstate-of-the-artclinicalfacilitiesandrespondtoattendees’inquiries.

OnMarch21st,duringschoolhours,TrusteeGreenvisitedwiththeTNCCseniorclassandengagedingroupdialogueonthebenefitsoftripartite,professionalmembership,visionsoftheirfutureasprofessionalsandopportunitiesforthemtoadvancetheirinfluenceandimpactasleaders.Thestudentswerepresentedwithexamgiftbagscontainingawealthofdelectabletreatsandsupportivesuppliesfortheirupcomingboards.

StudentsfromLordFairfaxCommunityCollegeparticipatedintheWarrenCountyHealthFairheldatWarrenCountyHighSchoolonApril16,2016educatingthepublicandhandingoutoralhygieneproducts.10LFCCdentalhygienestudentsattendedtheScientificSessionthisMarchandtheNorthwestcomponentcontributed$25perstudentfortheirregistrationfee.It'sencouragingtoseesomanyrisingstarstakingahigherinterestintheirprofession.

DoyouknowtheinspiringstoryofBenefactor,AliceHinchcliffeWilliams,RDH,MS,andherlegacy?AlicewasadentalhygieneeducatorinRoanokeandapractitionerinLynchburg,Virginia.FollowinggraduationfromEastmanSchoolofDentalHygieneinRochester,NY,Aliceworkedasaschooldentalhygienistserving20schoolsinLiverpool,NY.HerleadershipskillsasPresidentoftheDentalHygienists’AssociationoftheStateofNewYorkbecameanassetoftheVirginiaDentalHygienists’AssociationinherserviceasTrustee.WithherMastersdegreeinScienceEducationfromUVA,shethenmovedontobecomethefounderanddirectoroftheDentalHygieneProgramatVirginiaWesternCommunityCollegein1975.Herpassionforscholarshipandlifelonglearningfordentalhygienistsisexemplifiedwithherlong-standing,generousandvisionarysupportoftheVDHA’scontinuingeducationspeaker’sfund.

AsthebenefactoroftheVirginiaDentalHygienists’AssociationFoundation(VDHAF)in1994,Aliceendowedtheperpetualfund,establishingittoprovidelifelonglearningexperiencesforcurrentandfuturegenerationsofdentalhygieniststhroughoutVirginia.ThemembersoftheVDHArespondedtothegiftbyraisingmatchingfundsthatistodayadministeredthroughtheAliceHinchcliffeWilliamsContinuingEducationFund.Whenyoumakeyourtax-deductibledonationtoVDHA’sFoundation,youarefullysupportingthecontinuanceofAlice’slegacyandthefoundation’sperformanceofcharitable,educational,researchandscientificactivities.MargeGreen,RDH,MS,co-foundingdirectorandtreasureroftheVDHAFoundation,says,“Alicewasaveryspecialcolleagueandfriendwhowarmedtheheartsofallwhoknewher.Herlong-standingsupporthasenrichedtheprofessionaldevelopmentofstudentsandpractitionersandtheadvancementofthedentalhygieneprofession.Thequalitiesthatmadeherawonderfulpersoncontributedtohermanyleadershipaccomplishmentsandpassionforlifelonglearningandscholarlyactivityinourprofession.HerlegacylivesoninourmanyaccomplishedVDHAleaders,grantandscholarshiprecipientswhohavebenefitedfromhergenerosityandvision.”Afterherretirementfromeducationin1980,AlicewentontoservehercommunitythroughAltrusa,theOrderoftheEasternStar,herchurch,andaspresidentoftheAdultCareCenterofCentralVirginia.In1988,theYWCArecognizedherwiththeAcademyofWomenAwardforHumanServices.
