The Curet Spring 2016 President’s Message Moving Forward with Remote Supervision Last year, the VDHA House of Delegates voted on the definition of remote supervision. The definition we have added to our glossary states: Remote supervision – A dentist has periodic communication with a dental hygienist regarding patient care. The dentist shall not be required to have previously examined the patient and need not be present when the dental hygiene services are provided. This internal policy change was part of a process toward working on pro-active legislation to expand how and where Dental Hygienists may practice under Remote Supervision. Working with VDA over many months, VDHA came to a consensus to initiate a remote supervision bill, which passed unanimously through the entire legislative process. The Governor signed SB712 on March 25 th 2016. Read the full bill here: http://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?161+ful+CHAP0497 I will share some excerpts from the bill: A dental hygienist shall only practice under remote supervision at a community health center, charitable safety net facility, free clinic, long-term care facility, elementary or secondary school, Head Start program, or women, infants, and children program. While this step forward has clear limitations on sites of service, our belief is that this will open up access to care for more Virginians. We hope that some new, innovative agreements between dentists, hygienists, and other stakeholders will take place as a result of this bill.

Dentalprovidershaveauniqueopportunitytoaddresstheirpatients’comprehensivehealthcareneedsbyintegratingclinicalservicesintothedentalpractice.Servicessuchasdiabetesandbloodpressurescreeningandsubstanceabuseidentificationcanimprovepatientwellnessandunderscoretherelationshipbetweenoralhealthandoverallhealth.Dentalhygienistsareparticularlypoisedtoimprovepublichealthandprovideoralhealtheducation,duetotheirstrongbackgroundinhealthprotection,diseasepreventionandhealthpromotion.Healthprovidersfrommultipledisciplinesoutsideofdentistrycandeliveroralhealthservices,educationandreferralsinmostcaresettingsaswell.Integratingoralhealthintoallaspectsofhealthcarecanexpandaccesstooralhealthservicesandenhancecomprehensivecare.Inmanyinstances,oralhealthserviceslikefluoridevarnishapplicationandoralhealthassessmentsarereimbursable.Inallinstances,integratingoralhealthandclinicalservicessupportscollaborativecareandwhole-bodyhealth.TheVirginiaOralHealthCoalition(VaOHC)hasputtogetheranewresourcefordentalandmedicalproviderswhoareinterestedinintegratingoralhealthandclinicalservices:theIntegrationToolkit.ThetoolkitishostedonVaOHCwebsiteandisaccessiblefromtheirhomepage(www.vaoralhealth.org).
TheIntegrationToolkitisanonlineresourcethatwalksyouthroughkeystepsofintegration,fromidentifyingyourpatients’majorhealthcareneedstoanalyzingfinancialmodels,andmore.Thetoolkitincludes:
• Sampleoralhealthintegrationmodels;• Promptquestionstoconsiderwithyourteam;• Clinicalpracticetoolsforthedentaloffice;and,• Continuingeducationopportunitiesfordentalandmedicalproviders.

DoyouknowtheinspiringstoryofBenefactor,AliceHinchcliffeWilliams,RDH,MS,andherlegacy?AlicewasadentalhygieneeducatorinRoanokeandapractitionerinLynchburg,Virginia.FollowinggraduationfromEastmanSchoolofDentalHygieneinRochester,NY,Aliceworkedasaschooldentalhygienistserving20schoolsinLiverpool,NY.HerleadershipskillsasPresidentoftheDentalHygienists’AssociationoftheStateofNewYorkbecameanassetoftheVirginiaDentalHygienists’AssociationinherserviceasTrustee.WithherMastersdegreeinScienceEducationfromUVA,shethenmovedontobecomethefounderanddirectoroftheDentalHygieneProgramatVirginiaWesternCommunityCollegein1975.Herpassionforscholarshipandlifelonglearningfordentalhygienistsisexemplifiedwithherlong-standing,generousandvisionarysupportoftheVDHA’scontinuingeducationspeaker’sfund.
