Capitol The state capitol building of Indiana in Marion

County. The Indiana Statehouse (capitol) was built in 1888 This is the fifth building to house the government. When the Capitol was built it cost

1.8 million dollars. The capitol was designed by Edwin May. Edwin May died right after the construction started. They used materials mostly from Indiana like Indiana oak and limestone. The capitol building is laid out like a cross. They made a hole in the cornerstone and put a time capsule in it with 42 items in it like a bible, coins, crops, and maps.

Tourist Attraction #1 The Indianapolis 500 is held at the Indianapolis

Motor Speedway. It is a car race held overMemorial Day weekend. The first race was in 1911.

It is called the “500” because there are 5oo miles in the whole race but only 200 laps because each lap is 2.5 miles. A weird fact is that every year at the after celebration party the winner drinks milk. They drink milk because the first time winner drank butter milk. The butter milk company liked it so much that now every year the winner drinks any kind of milk.

Tourist Attraction #2 The Indianapolis zoo opened in 1964. It

has over 1,million visitors a year. They have over 3,80o animals and 320 species of animals. It is a zoo, an aquarium, and a botanic garden. They have a dolphin underwater dome, a rare Amur tiger, a Grand Cayman blue iguana, and many more. In the ocean exhibit, you can even touch a real shark.

Historical event in Indiana The territory that is now Indiana was first

explored by the French in 1784. they where Mostly fur traders, who built the first settlement in Vincennes. This is a important part in history because it is the founding of Indiana.
