REVIEW

In Chapter five(5) of Genesis the focus is on two families. The family of Cain and Seth.

The line of Cain lists six generations. Cain the first was a murderer. Lamech, the last, was the second recorded murderer and the first polygamist. Lamech was also the first outspoken promoter of blood revenge. Genesis 4:17-24

Genesis 4:17•17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived , and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch

Genesis 4:18•18 And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.

Genesis 4:19 •19 And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.

Genesis 4:20 • 20 And Adah bare Jabal: he

was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.

Genesis 4:21 • 21 And his brother's name

was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.

Genesis 4:22•22 And Zillah, she also

bare Tubalcain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubalcain was Naamah

GENESIS 4:23• 23 And Lamech said unto his

wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.

GENESIS 4:24•24 If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold

Genesis 4:17-24 gives a list of Cain's posterity and a series of firsts:

The first city, named Enoch

The beginning of organized animal husbandry

The beginning of the art of music

The beginning of metal craft

The first song (in the song Lamech explains to his wives that he killed a young man in self-defense, but because it wasn't premeditated, like Cain's murder of his brother, Lamech would be much more immune from reprisal)

• Chapter 5 has been called “The Tolling of the Death Bell” because of the oft-repeated expression “and he died” It records the blood line of the messiah from Adam to Noah’s son Shem. This blood line is records in St. Luke 3:36-38

Luke 3:36• 36 Which was the son of Cainan,

which was the son of Arphaxad, which was the son of Sem, which was the son of Noe, which was the son of Lamech,

Luke 3:37• 37 Which was the son of

Mathusala, which was the son of Enoch, which was the son of Jared, which was the son of Maleleel, which was the son of Cainan,

Luke 3:38• 38 Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.

* Adam was created in the likeness of God.

* Seth was born in the image of Adam. * Genesis 5:5 records the physical

fulfillment of what God said would happen in Genesis 2:17. The spiritual fulfillment took place the day Adam sinned.

Studies in genesis

GENESIS 5:18• 18 And Jared lived an hundred sixty and two years, and he begat Enoch: • .

GENESIS 5:19• 19 And Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:

GENESIS 5:20• 20 And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died .

GENESIS 5:21• 21 And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah:

GENESIS 5:22• 22 And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:

GENESIS 5:23• 23 And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years:

GENESIS 5:24• 24 And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

A. The Enoch and Lamech mentioned here should not be confused with those in Chapter 4. The Enoch in verse 18 is the seventh from Adam, not the third.

B. By faith Enoch walked with God for over 300 years and pleased the Lord

Hebrews 11:5• By faith Enoch was translated

that he should not see death; and was not found , because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony , that he pleased God

1. It is good to start well but it is even better to continue steadfastly to the end. The word walk with God is the business of a lifetime, and not just the performance of an hour. .

ST. LUKE 9:57-62• 57 And it came to pass , that, as

they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest .

ST. LUKE 9:58• 58 And Jesus said unto him,

Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.

ST. LUKE 9:59• 59 And he said unto another,

Follow me. But he said , Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.

ST. LUKE 9:60• 60 Jesus said unto him, Let the

dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.

ST. LUKE 9:61• 61 And another also said , Lord, I

will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell , which are at home at my house.

ST. LUKE 9:62• 62 And Jesus said unto him, No

man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back , is fit for the kingdom of God

HEBREWS 12:1-4• 1 Wherefore seeing we also are

compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

HEBREWS 12:2• 2 Looking unto Jesus the author

and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

HEBREWS 12:3• 3 For consider him that endured

such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.

HEBREWS 12:4• 4 Ye have not yet resisted unto

blood, striving against sin

JOHN 8:31• 31 Then said Jesus to those

Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

2. Enoch was transported to heaven prior to the flood just as the church will be raptured to heaven before the tribulation begins.

1 thessalonians 4:13-18

• 13 But I would not have you to be ignorant , brethren, concerning them which are asleep , that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

1 thessalonians 4:14• 14 For if we believe that Jesus

died and rose again , even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

1 thessalonians 4:15• 15 For this we say unto you by

the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep .

1 thessalonians 4:16• 16 For the Lord himself shall

descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

1 thessalonians 4:17• 17 Then we which are alive and

remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

1 thessalonians 4:18• 18 Wherefore comfort one

another with these words

REVELATIONS 3:10• 10 Because thou hast kept the

word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

3. Methuselah lived longer than any other man. He lived nine hundred and sixty-nine (969) years. His name means “it shall be sent”, it may have been prophecy, because the flood came in the year of his death.

4. Lamech named his son Noah. His name means “rest”.

5. As the years passed, man’s life expectancy decreased.

GENESIS 6:3• 3 And the LORD said , My spirit

shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh : yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

Psalms 90:10• 10 The days of our years are

threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off , and we fly away .

6. In most cases the way we live will have a direct impact on how long we live.

1 kings 3:14• 14 And if thou wilt walk in my

ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk , then I will lengthen thy days.

Proverbs 10:27• 27 The fear of the LORD

prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.

Psalms 91:14-16• 14 Because he hath set his love

upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high , because he hath known my name.

Psalms 91:15• 15 He shall call upon me, and I

will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.

Psalms 91:16• 16 With long life will I satisfy

him, and shew him my salvation.

Proverbs 3:1• 1 My son, forget not my law; but

let thine heart keep my commandments:

Proverbs 3:2• 2 For length of days, and long

life, and peace, shall they add to thee.

Ephesians 6:1-3• 1 Children, obey your parents in

the Lord: for this is right.

Ephesians 6:2• 2 Honour thy father and mother;

(which is the first commandment with promise;)

Ephesians 6:3• 3 That it may be well with thee,

and thou mayest live long on the earth.
