SignalconversionSometimestheavailablesignalscannotbeprocessedbythecontrollerortheactuator.Inthiscase,signalconvertersarerequiredtoconvert
theinputsignal(ordifferentinputsignals)tothedesiredoutputsignal.
SignalamplificationIflonglinesorhighburdenshavetobeoperated,itmaybenecessarytoamplifythesignal.CCanalogsignalconvertersrequireonlylowin-putpowerandprovidehighoutputpower.
Thus,therearenorestrictionsfortheconverter'spositionontheline,i.e.itcanbeused
forsignalrefreshing attheendoftheline (lowinputpower)
orforsignalamplification atthebeginningoftheline (highoutputpower).
SignalfilteringParticularlyonlonglinesorinroughindustrialenvironmentsthesignalsareexposedtohighelectromagneticinterferences.Thefrequencyofthecoupledinterferencesignalsmaybeintherangeofthecommonmainsfrequency(50Hz)orevenmuchhigher(incaseoffrequencyconverters).Accordingtothespecificrequirements,analogsignalconvertersareavailablewhichprovidereliablesuppressionofthoseinterferencesbymeansofaninputlow-passfilter.

Signalseparation Protection against overvoltage
Theincreaseduseofmicro-electronicsmakecontrolsmuchmoresensitiveagainstovervoltages,resultingfromlightningdischargesorswitchingprocesses.SuppressiondiodesareincorporatedintheinputoftheCCanalogsignalconverterswhichenabletheconverterstoarrestovervoltageswithlowenergylevel(resultingfromswitchingprocesses)bythemselves.Theproductsfurther-moreprovideelectricalisolationbetweeninput,outputandsup-plycircuitforprotectionofthecontrollerconnectedtotheoutput.
Protection against ground loops Ifcomponentsareusedwhichrefertoground,themeasuring
signalscanbefalsifiedbyaso-calledgroundloop.Inthiscase,certainpartsofthesignalaretransmittedviaearthandnotviatheanalogtransmissionline,thuscausingincorrectevaluationofthesignal.Theelectricalisolationbetweentheinputandtheoutputdisconnectsthesegroundloopsandthusenablescorrectsignaltransmission.
