Donations have been flowing into theGFWC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club.

The organization has received thousandsof items, as its gears up for the annualWoman’s Club Flea Market scheduled forMarch 4 and March 5 at the Historic OldLutz School, 18819 N. U.S. 41 in Lutz.

The flea market is set to be the club’slargest fundraiser this year, because its annu-al arts and crafts festival, typically held inDecember had to be cancelled due the de-velopment of a sinkhole at Lake Park.

“The community has really been rallyingaround. I think we have more donations thisyear,” said Cathy Mathes, president of thewoman’s club.

“This year, we’re in particular need,” shesaid. “We just want to exceed last year’s (fleamarket) number.”

People have donated a wide range ofgoods from household and children’s itemsto antiques and collectibles, to sports equip-ment and gardening tools.

“If you walk around, you’ll see we haveone of everything,” Mathes said.

Higher-end items such as silver and crys-tal can be found at “huge bargains,” Mathesnoted.

The flea market, which has been aroundfor more than 35 years, typically attractsthousands of shoppers during its two-dayrun.

When patrons want to take a little breakfrom shopping, they can grab a bite to eat atthe food booth — which will be offeringbreakfast items, baked goods, hot dogs, cof-fee and other beverages.

To help keep the event running smooth-ly, the club enlists the help of over 80volunteers — including the member’s hus-bands and children.

Besides raising money, the event pro-vides a chance for club members to spendtime with each other and with people from

the community, the club president said.“It’s so much fun with the camaraderie,”

Mathes said. “I really enjoy working with thepeople. ...You get to know people betterthan just seeing them at a (woman’s club)meeting.”

At the end of the event, leftover itemswill be donated to local organizations, in-cluding Goodwill and Salvation Army, localnursing homes, veterans’ charities and locallibraries.

Figuring out how much the club cangive in scholarships and to the various or-ganizations it helps will be tougher this year.

The cancellation of the arts and craftsfestival has forced the club to scramble to

secure funds for local organizations and col-lege scholarships.

“We plan to sit down and look at howmuch we make, and decide what we’regoing to do with it, because it’s still notwhat we had last year,” Mathes explained.“We had (raised) $30,000, plus we had theflea market (donations) last year. ...We haveto be very careful about budgeting it out.”

Anyone who wishes to donate items forthe flea market still has time. Donations willbe accepted until March 3. All donationsshould be in clean and in working order.Large appliances and sleeper sofas cannotbe accepted.

CrossFit En Fuego part of growing fitness movementBy Kevin [email protected]

Peter and Jennifer Abreut have been op-erating a CrossFit gym even before thefitness movement became mainstream just afew years ago.

They have witnessed the rapid growth ofCrossFit firsthand since they opened a1,200-square-foot fitness warehouse — nearthe Tire Kingdom in Lutz — over six yearsago.

At that time, their gym’s membership to-taled about 20 members, essentiallyconsisting of close friends and family mem-bers.

A lot has changed relatively quickly. The Abreuts now operate CrossFit En

Fuego, a CrossFit Inc. affiliate, which ishoused in an 8,500-square-foot facility, at3320 Land O’ Lakes Blvd.

CrossFit En Fuego, a play off Peter’sCuban roots and past experience as a fire-fighter, has nearly 200 members, and alsoincludes a kids’ program for ages 4 to 17.

According to a report by the HarvardBusiness School, CrossFit Inc., is the fastestgrowing community of fitness service busi-nesses ever.

In 2005, there were 13 CrossFit affiliates. That figure rose to over 12,000 in 2015, ac-cording to that report.

“When we started, not many peopleknew about CrossFit,” Peter said. “It wasn’ton ESPN. We just had to go out there andtell people. Now, we get people all the timethat say, ‘I saw that on TV, and I think I wantto do it.’”

CrossFit En Fuego incorporates a broadrange of ages, body types and levels of fit-ness.

On weekdays, several classes are heldfrom 5 a.m. to 11 a.m., and from 4 p.m. to 7p.m. On Saturdays, the Abreuts offer a freeclass at 9 a.m.

The combination of a group (usuallyeight to 12 people) setting and hands-on in-struction has made the fitness craze anattractive option, compared to the typicalworkout experience.

“You make friends when you come inand build a community...so you motivateeach other through that, and you’re held ac-countable through your peers,” Jennifer said.“People are always together within a groupand with a coach, so it’s almost like personaltraining.”

With new workouts plastered across adry erase board each day, members canwalk in without the worry of planning outan exercise routine.

“People love it because they don’t haveto think. They come in, look at the workoutof the day, and we guide them through itand work with them,” Peter said. “We’regoing to teach you how to do all the move-ments correctly and make sure you’removing safely, and getting the right kind ofworkout for your level.”

While some current or prospectivemembers may have certain aesthetic goals— leaner build, more defined muscles —CrossFit’s focus is more about completingthe workouts, and building off that progressto get faster, stronger and more flexible.

“It’s much more fun to take the focus offof trying to do something because you wantto tone up, and then just try to do some-thing because you want to get better or becompetitive with somebody in your class,”Peter explained. “In doing that, I tell every-body, ‘Your body is going to respond, and it’sgoing to start changing. Your body has nooption but to get in shape.’”

As opposed to running on a treadmill orgliding on an elliptical machine, CrossFit

workouts are often based around Olympicweightlifting, gymnastics movements andtraditional plyometric exercises, which in-volve jumping movements.

Everything from squat racks, monkey barrigs, gymnastic rings, box jumps, rowing ma-chines, medicine balls, kettle bells andbarbells are used in the workout routines, which typically last an hour.

“We don’t use very many machines,”Peter said. “What we’re teaching is for you tomove well. Putting something overhead is alot different compared to if (a machine) justgoes up and down.”

Every day, the routine changes. One day, members may find themselves using a jumprope and doing pull-ups. The next, they mayrun a 5K outdoors.

Not having the same exercise everydayhelps keep members interested and ontheir toes, Peter said.

“We’re trying to be as balanced as wecan. It’s called GPP—General PhysicalPreparedness, where you’re trying to hiteverything at once,” he said. “That’s one ofthe cool things about it—you’re hitting allthe fitness domains. You’re getting stronger, you’re getting faster, and you’re getting moreaerobic endurance. You’re developing all thattogether, instead of specifying one thing.”

According to Jennifer, members haveseen noticeable results—both body andmind— in as little as six weeks.

“Your body realizes how to recover from(the workouts),” she said. “With the intervaltraining, your body releases the happy hor-mones (endorphins.) Within a couple hoursafter the workout...your body feels thatextra burst of energy.

“I always tell them, ‘We’re keeping youout of that nursing home.’”

After several months, more substantial re-sults begin to kick in, Peter said.

“I can’t even count how many members— after six to 12 months — have said, ‘Mydoctor just took me off three medications,’or ‘I’m down 10 percent body fat.’ And that’sawesome to hear,” he said.

“The bottom line is, it does work,” hesaid.

Depending on the length of commit-ment, membership costs range from $135to $165 a month.

Jennifer said some prospective membersmay initially be “scared” by some of theCrossFit exercises and movements, but theyquickly realize the environment isn’t as in-timidating as they perceived.

“The hardest part is walking throughthat door,” she said.

This time ofyear is par-t i c u l a r l y

good for fresh Floridastrawberries.

The sweet, red, and juicy heart-shaped little fruit is packed full ofvitamins and minerals, but low in calo-ries.

Those who’ve attended the FloridaStrawberry Festival in Plant City arelikely aware of how delicious theberries taste in strawberry shortcake— served to festival-goers on spongecake or a biscuit, whichever they pre-fer. This year’s festival runs from March3 through March 13.

Food trend predictions for 2016from researchers at University ofFlorida’s Institute of Food andAgricultural Sciences say that a premi-um-flavored/sweeter variety strawberrycould be coming to a supermarket nearyou this year. This is the second year theUF/IFAS is marketing “Sweet Sensation,”a medium-sized, moderately firm andjuicy strawberry.

March is National Nutrition Month, but you can celebrate with strawber-ries all year long: for breakfast in ayogurt parfait; for lunch on a spinachsalad with cooked chicken and al-monds; for an afternoon snack, just asthey are; and, in assorted recipes fordinner and dessert.

Strawberries are very healthy, too.Just eight of them provide more vita-min C than an orange.

Pasco County is replacing dinosaur ana-log with new age digital.

The county is replacing a 26-year-old,outmoded radio communications system.

New radios, antennas and cell towerswill enhance Pasco County’s public safetycoverage.

In recent years, the existing system hasbeen plagued with complaints by residentsabout dropped 911 calls.

Todd Bayley, Pasco County’s chief infor-mation officer, stated the obvious to Pascocommissioners in February. “The system isat maximum capacity,” he said. “We havecoverage issues currently.”

Commissioners approved a $14.5 million

contract with Williams Communications Inc.,to add seven new cell tower sites for a total of10 sites countywide. Existing sites are in NewPort Richey, Darby and Dade City. The newsites will enhance public safety coverage par-ticularly in new growth areas of Zephyrhills,Land O’ Lakes and Wesley Chapel.

In addition, the new system will replaceold hand-held and portable radios, add anten-nas to existing sites, and enhance capabilitiesat the county’s 911 emergency center. Theproject will roll out over three years, withcompletion expected in July 2018.

“It’s giving us total 100 percent coverageeverywhere in the county,” Bayley said.

The current system relies on three celltower sites, 2,500 hand-held and portable ra-dios, and 11 dispatch consoles for 911 calls.

The manufacturer’s expiration date for

that system is in 2017. The upgraded system will support pub-

lic safety agencies including the PascoSheriff’s Office, Office of EmergencyManagement, and Pasco Fire Rescue as wellas law enforcement agencies that havemerged emergency operations with Pasco. Those include Port Richey, Dade City andNew Port Richey.

In addition, the county supports commu-nications on board more than 30 percent ofPasco County School District’s buses.Communications among all county agenciesalso will be enhanced and expanded.

Funding is from the Penny for Pasco taxmoney collected annually by the county, with 20 percent set aside for public safetyprojects.

The new system will be compatible with

radio systems used by law enforcement andpublic safety agencies in surrounding coun-ties.

As an added feature, Bayley said certainpublic safety and fire rescue officers will beable to download an application to aSmartphone, and with the punch of a but-ton, start talking over the radio system.

“So, they don’t always have to have aradio on their hip,” Bayley said.

As the systems are traded out, the transi-tion should be seamless as the new systemis compatible with the existing system,Bayley said.

The county plans to fund the project ini-tially by borrowing from the general reservefunds and then securing a loan to reimbursethose funds. The loan closing is expected onMarch 9.

tered at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, Pop100, and Single Sales Charts.

He penned “Heart Full of Soul,” an autobi-ography published by Random House, andstarred in the role of Teen Angel in theBroadway musical “Grease.”

Now, he also has a hand in barbecue, asco-owner of a barbecue restaurant inBirmingham.

“I keep busy,” Hicks said.He also continues to tour, with upcoming

concerts planned in Florida, Georgia,Alabama, Tennessee, Delaware, Maryland,Pennsylvania and Missouri.

His Florida appearance will be at the LandO’ Lakes Spring Music Festival on March 11.

He’s looking forward to the concert, not-ing he enjoys a nice following from hisFlorida fans, who tend to travel.

“I love performing,” Hicks said. “I thinkthat’s something I’ll always do. Entertainingand making people feel music, that’s some-thing that I just really love doing.”

Hicks is the featured performer in a newevent the Central Pasco Chamber ofCommerce is launching, aimed at giving peo-ple an annual music festival they can enjoy, while area businesses showcase their goodsand services.

The festival is a new take on the cham-ber’s annual business expo that has beenheld for two decades at the Land O’ LakesRecreation Complex.

This festival runs for two days, March 11and March 12, with Hicks performing on thefirst night, following Solar Exposure, theopening act. The second day of the festivalfeatures a business expo and other musicalacts.

Tickets for Hicks’ concert are still avail-able, said David Gainer, co-chairman of theevent. They cost $40 for reserved seating, and$25 for lawn seating.

Food and beverage will be available forpurchase, and no coolers will be allowed.

Gainer also noted that all of the slots forthe business vendors for the expo on March12 have been sold.

Hicks said he is looking forward to theLand O’ Lakes event, and he hopes he’ll seesome of his loyal fans.

He said his interest in music dates back tohis teenage years, when he taught himselfhow to play the harmonica.

At 16, he taught himself acoustic guitarand then moved on to piano later on, andthen began writing songs, he said.

“I think it was a natural progression,”Hicks said.

His early experience helped prepare himfor life after winning American Idol, he said.

“I think a lot of the touring as a kid kindof help me set my own experience up,” hesaid.

“When it happened, the transition fromobscurity to notoriety was kind of an easytransition because, I’d been doing it (touring)a lot, since I was a kid,” he said.

“Experience always helps,” he added.“I think you just kind of get in a groove

with notoriety. You start understanding yourplace in society as a public figure. And then, you just have to reinvent yourself and stayout there, and work as much as you can,” hesaid.

As American Idol concludes its televisionrun this year, Hicks said the show is exitingon a high note.

“I think it’s bittersweet, but I think theway that Idol is ending its run is a prettyclassy way to do it,” Hicks said. “I think 15years of television is quite respectable.”

Serio added it was important to keep thearts and crafts festival near Lutz.

“A lot of people pitched location ideas, but some weren’t practical or weren’t goingto work,” Serio said.

“Someone, for instance, suggested the(Florida State) Fairgrounds. We can’t do that;we have to keep it in our area.”

To make up for the dearth of fundscaused by cancellation of the festival nearlythree months ago, the woman’s club plansto host several smaller events and fundrais-ers throughout the year.

“We’re trying to take the burden off ourclub members’ shoulders, because it’s aheavy financial demand on us,” Serio said.“We’re trying to reach our (donation) num-bers.”

The teenager, who lives with her familyin Lutz, has been living out of wheelchair fortwo years. She is fed through a feeding tube.

Rijos attends Steinbrenner High for someclasses, but is educated by telephone athome for other classes.

People with CRPS not only suffer withthe pain, but they also struggle with the fail-ure of others to understand their condition,Concepcion said.

People tend to discount the pain,Concepcion said. They think they are exag-gerating, or that the problem is justpsychological, she said.

That’s why the disease is sometimescalled the “suicide disease,” Rijos said. Somewith CRPS can no longer bear the pain, losehope that their condition will ever improve, and they choose to end their lives, she said.

Rijos compared the pain she experiencesto someone placing their hand on a hotburner and leaving it there.

It’s like having a pain switch that nevergoes off, her mother said.

The documentary has been accepted bysix film festivals, and recently won ‘best di-rector’ and ‘most impactful topic’ in adocumentary at the Hollywood Florida FilmFestival.

The Tampa Bay area is fortunate, becausethere are two doctors who treat patientswith CRPS, Mattocks said, noting his docu-mentary also includes a Land O’ Lakeswoman in her 40s who is suffering from thedisease.

Increased awareness of CRPS is needed, not only by the general public, but also bythe medical community, Mattock said.

“I know people who live in Long Island, who have to go to Philly for treatment,” hesaid.

Mattocks said that CRPS is just one of therare conditions that people face, withoutanyone giving voice to their struggles.

“There are over 350 million worldwidewho suffer from rare disease. If you thinkabout it, if there is no Ice Bucket Challenge, how can these people have a voice? It’s notjust about CRPS. It’s about rare disease ingeneral,” Mattocks said.

To that end, he plans to be an advocateand hopes to inspire others.

“I believe that this is, in a sense, divine,”he said, noting additional screenings of “Trialby Fire” are expected.

“We have several distribution offers onthe table,” Mattocks said.

New coaching staff leads Wiregrass RanchBy Kevin [email protected]

Wiregrass Ranch High made acoaching change for its softballteam at the end of its last season, following complaints from par-ents and players about the“loosey-goosey” structure of theteam.

The new head coach, YamaniVazquez, and assistant coach,Tyler Finn, have spent the pastseveral years coaching rec leagueand travel softball in WesleyChapel.

The first-time high schoolcoaches are using their respectivemilitary and law enforcementbackgrounds to implement a cul-ture change—better organization, more positivity and more disci-pline.

Coach Vazquez said he’s incor-porated “little things,” such ashaving players do more field-work, having players hustle inbetween practice drills, and en-suring players remove theirheadgear before shaking handswith opposing teams at the endof games.

“I have to say they’ve beenvery receptive and welcoming ofour system,” said Vazquez, aneight-year military veteran whocurrently teaches science at JohnLong Middle School in WesleyChapel. “It’s definitely a change from lastyear.

“One of the things (Wiregrass Ranch prin-cipal) Robyn White mentioned was theamount of (negative) emails she got from thesoftball side more than any other sport, andwe were like, ‘Okay, we’re going to changethat.’ It was a great opportunity for us, be-cause we knew the state of the program andhow it was left, so we felt we could get itback up, and change a few things.”

Junior Samantha Hiley, one of the Bulls’top hitters, said the new coaching staff ispaying more attention to details, such asmaking sure the team’s uniforms are clean, the field is maintained better and team isbetter equipped.

Junior catcher and Florida InternationalUniversity softball commit Kameron Aitkensaid the new coaches “have done every-thing to make our experience better.”

“They’re great coaches,” Aitken said.“They work well with us.”

While the team “practices a lot more,”—five days a week—than prior years, Bullsplayers enjoy the new staff’s willingness tolisten, and value their input on team matters.

“These coaches listen to our opinionsand they take into consideration some ofthe things we say,” junior second basemanAlexis Ridolph said. “They are much friend-lier.”

“I really like how they’re open to lettingus play how we want to. It’s not, ‘You must

do this, this and this,’” said senior third base-man Tylah Remaley, a Florida Tech softballcommit.

Junior centerfielder Jaime Valenta notedthe new coaches are “really nice and funny”and “listen to us a lot more.”

Finn, a retired New York state trooperand former St. Leo University baseball play-er, said taking over the program andworking alongside Coach Vazquez has beena “thrill” and a “dream.”

“The great thing for me is I’ve coachedalmost every one of these kids since theywere little,” said Finn, who has two daugh-ters, Karlye and Taryn, on the roster.

“When you get to the high school level, especially with the talent here, you’re not

doing a heck of a lot of coaching. “These kids are seasoned play-

ers. We just sit there and guidethem, and call the offensive playswhen they get up. ...These girlsare extremely talented, and verybright athletes,” he said.

With a 3-5 record as of Feb.28, the team is not off to the startthey expected.

One reason for the slow startcan be attributed to the depar-tures of ace pitcher LindseySnyder and three of the top fourrun producers from last year’slineup.

With the loss of Snyder, thenew coaches have been forced touse three freshmen in the pitch-ing circle, with shaky results.

“We’ve tried out a bunch ofyoung pitchers that are beingtested a little bit,” Finn said. “Wehad no experienced pitchers.Lindsey was a workhorse; wedon’t have that right now.”

Alexis Ridolph added theyouthful pitching staff is trying to“get into a rhythm.”

“I know the pitchers areworking really hard,” the secondbaseman said. “It’s just the factthey’re young and aren’t as expe-rienced in high school situations. But, I think they’ll be better bythe end of the year.”

As the Bulls go through someearly season growing pains with

the green pitching rotation, they’ll be forcedto rely on their hitting prowess to pick upthe slack.

Six players currently sport averages of.300 or better, including sophomores KacieLemanski (.471), and Keanna Harris (.417).Hiley (.458), Aitken (.364), Remaley (.348)and Ridolph (.304) are the others.

“Hitting is our fine point. There’s nodoubt about it,” Finn said.

As the pitching staff gets more comfort-able, the team feels they have a legitimateshot to win their conference and district.

“I know the girls believe it. We’re notgoing to settle for being a .500 team,” Finnsaid. “We see good things in the future,” Finnsaid.

The Zephyrhills High boys basketballteam’s historic season has come to an end.

After reaching the state tournament forthe first time in 50 years, the Bulldogs fell tothe Poinciana (Kissimmee) High Eagles 70-52 in the Class 5A state semifinals at TheLakeland Center on Feb. 25.

Zephyrhills (26-5) shot just 36 percentfrom the field, including a porous 1-for-15mark on three-point attempts.

Bulldogs head coach Alan Reed said histeam was overmatched by the Eagles’ lethalcombination of physicality and quickness.

“Their defense took us out of what wewere trying to do,” he said. “We got someshots, but we didn’t get real good shots. Thegame was a very physical game...I had noproblem with that; it’s just we didn’t re-spond to it offensively.”

At halftime, the Bulldogs trailed 33-16,before “playing even” with the Eagles (25-5)in the second half.

“We played them head-to-head...in thesecond half, but we created that (deficit) inthe first half...and we weren’t able to gain

ground,” the Reed said.“We’ve been facing deficits like that all

year, but we haven’t faced a team of that cal-iber all year to overcome the deficit.”

Coming into the season, Reed felt his team

had a chance to have a very successful sea-son, especially since the roster featured a bevyof seniors, including leading scorer JeremyOppenheimer (22.5 points per game.)

Reed noted Oppenheimer’s improved

defensive awareness—understanding pass-ing lanes—as a catalyst for the team’s deepplayoff run.

“Jeremy’s a very good player, and he wasa very good on-court presence,” Reed said“He scored a lot of points, but a lot of timeshe distributed the ball. He led us in steals(4.9) and also led us in rebounds (8.2).”

The team’s “unselfishness” was anotherfactor in the Bulldogs advancing to the statetourney.

“We really, for the most part, played to-gether as a team, played together as a unit, and I thought that was one of the biggestthings for us,” Reed explained. “Each personperformed to their abilities and didn’t try todo things they weren’t really good at whenthe lights were turned on.

“We had a couple of kids that were verygood defensive players and rebounders, andthat’s what they did.”

Reed, 68, hasn’t made a decision if he’sgoing to coach the team next year.

Seven players expect to return.“All of them played some, and all are ca-

pable of stepping up,” Reed said. “Thebiggest thing is replacing Jeremy’s scoringability. That’s going to be tough.”

table for $10, he said.Pinson also plans to add a stage, to ac-

commodate music in the park. While there’s plenty to do, the park also

is a great place to unplug, relax and

recharge, Pinson said. For some, the park is a sanctuary; for oth-

ers, a meditation room, he said.“This is an outlet for people to just do

nothing,” Pinson said.

The Hillsborough River StatePark — just a short drive southof Zephyrhills — is one ofFlorida’s first state parks.

It’s a place where nature lovers can ex-plore trails, where fishing enthusiasts cancast their lines, where families and friendscan host special gatherings, and wherecampers can call the place home — for upto 14 days at a time.

The park opened in 1938, as one of thenation’s original Civilian ConservationCorps parks.

The Hillsborough River — the park’snamesake — was named in the late 1700sfor Wills Hills, the British Colonial Secretaryand Lord Earl of Hillsborough, according tothe park’s website.

The Civilian Conservation Corps estab-lished the area surrounding the river rapidsas a public park during the 1930s.

The 3,600-acre park is divided by theHillsborough River.

It features seven miles of nature trailsand boasts 15 ecosystems, said Brian Pinson, park manager.

Nature enthusiasts have a chance to ex-plore Florida’s wild side, with itsever-changing seasonal shows of wildflow-ers. They can also see wildlife such as deer, raccoons and rabbits, and birds such asowls, wood storks, woodpeckers, roseatespoonbills, and painted bunting.

Alligators are a common sight, as theysun themselves along the banks of theHillsborough River.

Those who enjoy a refreshing dip in thepool can take advantage of the park’s fullyaccessible pool, which is open seasonally.

The park also has 117 campsites, whichare extremely popular with northern visi-tors during the winter, Pinson said.

The campsites are also a popular drawon weekends during other parts of the year,he said.

The park draws roughly 250,000 visitorsa year, and they come from all over.

During a recent campground coffee, there were visitors from as far away asSwitzerland and Nova Scotia, and othersfrom Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York,Pinson said.

The park also includes the Fort FosterState Historic Site, which is not widelyknown — even to visitors at the park,Pinson said.

The fort is on the east side of U.S. 301,and is only opened for guided tours onweekends and special events.

Fort Foster is a reconstructed fort fromthe Second Seminole War. Rangers leadtours of the site on the weekends, for $2 perperson.

Despite its long-time presence at thepark, Fort Foster is little-known, said BrianPinson, park manager.

“Our annual attendance is about 250,000people a year. Of that 250,000 a year, I’ll bet240,000 of them have never heard of FortFoster,” he said.

But, he’s trying to change that.“We’re trying to get the word out on Fort

Foster,” he said.“What we’ve recently started doing is a

dinner at the fort. We do it once a month. Wesell tickets online. It’s like a four-star diningexperience. We light the entire fort up withcandles. We have re-enactors that comeover, on the Seminole side, as well as themilitary side. And, you sit at a picnic tablewith a couple of strangers, but you get to sitdown with somebody who is playing thepart of a military lieutenant from 1835. It’s$25 per person.

“We do it the third Saturday of everymonth through the winter. (Novemberthrough April).”

The dinners are limited to 25 people.People who want to learn more about

Fort Foster and the Second Seminole Waralso can visit the Interpretive Center, whichwas the park’s original ranger station. There, visitors can see more than 100 artifacts fromthe Fort Foster site.

Pinson, who became thepark manager just monthsago, is working to increase thenumber of reasons for peopleto come to the park, and tohelp visitors take full advan-tage of what it has to offer.

For instance, every otherWednesday at 6 p.m., the parkholds a potluck supper.

“It’s like loaves and fishes. We just eat and eat, andthere’s always enough food,”Pinson said. “We’ve got mealsfrom all over the country, sometimes all over the world.”

On March 19, the park ishaving a community yard sale.Anyone who wants to selltheir items can rent out aVisitors have plenty of places to picnic at the park.

Special events at the fort give visitors a chance to see re-enactments of skirmishes foughtduring the Second Seminole Indian War.

Park manager Brian Pinson describeswhat life was like for inhabitants at FortFoster, a reconstructed fort on the eastside of U.S. 301, across the road fromHillsborough River State Park.
