Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to CCME 2020: a virtual CCME.

On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic. The Government of British Columbia, directed all event organizers to cancel any gatherings over 250 people on March 12. The safety of CCME delegates and Canada’s health workforce is paramount and a high priority for the CCME partners, five national organizations including the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada, The Canadian Association of Medical Education, the College of Family Medicine of Canada, the Medical Council of Canada and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The Scientific Program Committee represents all five organizations and carefully prepares a conference program.

The program theme this year is “Weaving Humanism into the Fabric of Medical Education.” Although our medical schools facilitate the acquisition of scientific expertise, this alone cannot help patients deal with the loss of health and find some sort of meaning in their illness. We must graduate physicians who can and will listen to their patients and sufficiently understand their narratives of illness to act on their patients’ behalf. Any medical school that is serious about fostering a humanistic approach among its graduates must foster the development of supportive and collaborative learning environments that value mutual respect, professionalism and academic integrity. In these unprecedented times, with the stresses that are upon the entire healthcare system, this has never been more important. We will leverage state of the art technology to bring you a virtual event with a condensed scientific program with Humanism as a focus. All original plenaries, as designed by the Scientific Program Committee, will be provided. These include the plenary sessions, the Education Innovation and Education Research symposia, the AFMC Learner Forum and AFMC Hot Topic. Abstracts for all posters, workshops and orals accepted to CCME 2020 will be published in the Canadian Medical Education Journal.

We look forward to seeing you, virtually, at the 2020 CCME.

Dr. Alan J. Neville BMed Biol (Path), Anna Karwowska MDCM FRCPC MBChB, MEd FRCP (Lond), FRCPC Vice President, Education Professor, Department of Oncology Association of Faculties of Medicine of Associate Dean, Health Professional Education Canada Faculty of Health Sciences McMaster University

Dear friends and colleagues,

During the last short period we have all faced immense challenges and uncertainties that none of us could have anticipated. As patients, families and communities across the country come together to contend with the myriad and evolving impacts of the COVID-19 outbreak, never before has society relied more on healthcare professionals.

As leaders from the Faculties of Medicine across Canada we understand that our objectives are to equip our learners with the scientific skills and knowledge to prevent and treat disease. We also understand that our imperative is to do this while emphasizing the importance of equity, compassion and respect to the practice of medicine. At challenging times such as these, it is important that we continue to wholeheartedly embrace these values ourselves. We must work collaboratively to care for and support our learners, patients and communities, as well as each other. Together, we will get through this.

It is in this spirit that we come together for CCME 2020: Weaving Humanism into the Fabric of Medical Education – a timely theme as we navigate this unprecedented situation through collaboration and a commitment to caring for our patients, our families, our communities and for this community.

Sincerely,

Dermot Kelleher, MB, MD, FRCP, FRCPI, FMedSci, FCAHS, FRCPC, AGAF Dean, Faculty of Medicine Vice-President, Health The University of British Columbia

THE CCME - JOHN RUEDY EDUCATION INNOVATION SYMPOSIUM

Extending and Augmenting the Educational Experience, the View from the Anatomy Lab SESSION OBJECTIVES

• Explore the potential and the limitations of integrating technology in learning experiences. • Explain the process for planning a technology intervention from idea to first prototype. • Discuss the specific needs of medical education for integration with technology and

visualizations. SESSION OVERVIEW

Digital technologies, including virtual and augmented reality can help to visualize complex information in an interactive and accessible way. The anatomical sciences rely on visual information to help our learners - with the advent of accessible 3D technologies we have been able to develop educational applications that help our students understand complex anatomical relationships that will inform their understanding of the human body, prepare them for the dissection lab, and importantly, stay part of an accessible learning ecosystem that students can refer to as they enter their clinical experiences. In this symposium we will present the innovations that are being developed in Canadian anatomy labs along with the research showing the impact on student learning.

SEAN MCWATT

Sean McWatt, MSc, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Anatomy in the Division of Anatomical Sciences within the Department of Anatomy and cell Biology (Faculty of Medicine) at McGill University. EDUCATION RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM

Connecting the dots: Using multi-organizational data to evaluate the effect of medical education SESSION OBJECTIVES

• Describe research that uses inter-institutional data to study the relationship between educational initiatives and their outcomes;

• Identify ethical challenges and considerations in conducting data-driven research in health professions education;

• Recognize the way in which a commitment to the ethical utilization of education data supports institutional social accountability mandates.

SESSION OVERVIEW

Although "big data" is the new commerce and medical schools possess huge data banks, often this data is poorly utilised to inform, evaluate and potentially improve decision making on selection, curriculum and the effect of education on health care outcomes. While each institution has robust expertise, there is a lack of collective effort to drive data use across medical schools, and the education continuum. This symposium presents how a group of researchers inspired by the potential of data use are coming together, overcoming these challenges and building a network to advance the science of data use in medical schools and other health professions organizations. The presenters will discuss conceptual, practical, and structural/ethical challenges in conducting this type of research.

She was the first author on the 2017 and 2018 Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change Briefings for Canadian Policymakers as well as being the 2018 International Policy Director for the Lancet Countdown.

Dr Howard has been involved in policy and advocacy work on coal phase-out, active transport, plant-rich diets, integrating health impact assessments into environmental assessments, carbon pricing, and the health impacts of fracking. She led the successful campaign to have the Canadian Medical Association divest its reserves of fossil fuels and for MD-Financial to create fossil-fuel-free equity and bond funds for Canadian physicians to invest in, and is very involved in assisting medical learners in Canada and internationally to see climate change and health included in their curricula.

Dr Howard is on the steering committee of the Planetary Health Alliance, represents CAPE on the board of the Global Climate and Health Alliance, is the Co-Chair for North America of the WONCA working group on the environment, and sits on the boards of the Canadian Medical Association, Health in Harmony, and her local environmental NGO, Ecology North.

She represented the voice of health at the Canada/UK “Powering Past Coal” announcement at COP23.
