CENTER FOR ARCHITECTURE& URBAN DESIGN LOS ANGELES

CALA ROUNDABOUTClass: 302b Architectural Design IIIStudio Instructor: Lisa LittleProject duration: 1 semester

This semester-long project focuses on creating a new center for architecture and urban design in the City of Los Angeles. The given site is situated in the middle of the 1st street bridge which connects two dramatically different neighborhoods- Boyle Heights and the Arts District. With direct contact with the bridge, structural systems were also a major consideration for the project in addition to the design.

Design Concept-The project site is situated in a misconnected location with inadequate access and interaction between the two sides of the bridge. The formal strategy of the project seeks to reconnect the misconnections by establishing a looping geometry that allows a continuous circulation around the site. While creating an independent cultural institution, the project will also create an auxiliary circulation tool for the future L.A. River Park Development. Major circulations will also serve programmatic purposes to reinforce the conceptual intent.

Design Approach- The formal geometry of the project creates two mirrored cantilevers on the two sides of the bridge. While approaching the project on the bridge, the entire structure appears to be two opposing and disconnected peaks. The experience expands as visitors move down to the river through either the roof structure or from the interior of the building.

CALA ROUNDABOUT“Cracks” are introduced into the formal geometry by cutting into the large mass-ing to create more outdoor space and also to allow the passage of light.

7

Design Approach- The two cantilevers are connected by two tunnels situated under the arches of the bridge. The tunnels take visitors from one side of the bridge to the other and thus allowing a looping circulation around the entire site. The two disconnected peaks allow two separate entrances for the visitors and the museum workers, allowing an independent administrative sector. Visitors enter a large sloped gallery upon entrance which then leads to other programs. A major visitor entrance with a central lobby is also located below the bridge at the river level.

CALA ROUNDABOUTSkin System- A concrete panel system was developed to create a monochrome look which contrasts with the “light cracks” that are entirely covered with glazing. Each concrete panel mea-sures 20’x10’ and the skin patterns peel up to allow small curvy apertures. Four distinct panels form a continuous flowing pattern which can be repeated to create a larger seamless system.

HOUSING IN THE DISPERSED CITY

HOUSE IN HOUSEClass: 302a Architectural Design IIIStudio Instructor: Valery AugustinProject duration: ~6 Weeks

The first semester of third year studio was dedicated entirely to the typology of residential housing. Project I of the housing studio analyzes the expansion of urban growth beyond the core city into the suburbs and recognizes the increasingly need of creating more residential communities as a result. The specific project site is located in the City of Glendale, adjacent to the Glendale/ Los Angeles city boundary. The area composes of mixed programs with light industry and retails and is the home to the Glendale Metrolink and Amtrak Station. The site is also in close proximity to Griffith Park, Downtown Glendale, and the Burbank entertain-ment centers.

Longitudinal and Transverse Elevations

The design of project I starts with the traditional house form and analyzes how it can be dissected to create individual housing units without destructing the original form. The resulting units compose of studio and one-bedroom types, both with a loft structure inside. The units are aggregated in a vertical row which allows parking spaces underneath the lifted units. The design seeks to establish and emphasize a collective living experience while dwelling in individual units.

STEPPED HOUSEClass: 302a Architectural Design IIIStudio Instructor: Valery AugustinProject duration: ~8 Weeks

Project II of the housing studio moves from the suburb into the core city where urban development has seen a renewed growth in recent decades. This project seeks to provide an affordable social housing design that assists the low-income population in the large ur-ban context. The project site translates into the core Downtown Los Angeles with only one block away from Union Station, the major rail line gateway for the city.

HOUSING IN THE CORE CITY

STEPPED HOUSEThe design of project II is formally a L shaped arrangement with a stepped terrace typology. The entire building is elevated on a plinth that serves as a buffer from the public streets. The large open courtyard creates a miniature park for the residents and is shield-ed from the busiest traffic flows. The building structure consists of two wings with three stories on the longer wing and two stories on the shorter one. Each unit cluster has its individual circulation stairs with the main entrance located at the center. Three major voids in each of the three unit clusters provide skylight for the units. Private outdoor spaces are created within the units, by attached balconies, or by the voids resulted from the aggregations. The unit aggregation creates a stepped house with a flat rear facade.

MATERIAL& ARCHITECTURE

SILVERLAKE MEADOW LIBRARY

The final project of second year studio involves the research and design of a public library that integrates process, material, and program within a specifically sited context. The project is situated on the Silverlake Meadow and involves one under-ground story that will hold the book collection and one above ground story that will hold the reading hall and reception. Steel was chosen as a mandat-ed material throughout the project development. Typical steel structural systems were also a primary consideration for the project.

The design here aims to create a large continuous interior space with a simple geometry and intends to establish a walkable roof that will provide broader views of the entire Silverlake neighborhood. Bracing cables are used as the primary structural element. Peforated panels serve as the primary facade system and helps create a variety of viewing experiences from both inside and outside the project.

MAR VISTA TRACTHOUSING ADDITION

THE POCHE HOUSE

The first semester of second year studio was dedicated to the investigation of archi-tectural forms found in everyday life. The main case study found was a Thai restaurant located in Venice which formally composes of a regular box and two wrapping skins in the front, forming two interesting poche spaces in contrast to the geometric space created by the box. The case study was then taken through a series of investigations and analysis which treated drawings as “a site of architectural generation”. The resulting transformed forms was then used to create an addition to a house from the Mar Vista Tract developed by Gregory Ain in 1948 In West Los Angeles.

Exploded Axon

In this project, the original house istreated as the “box” from the original casestudy and the goal is to create poche spacesas “servant spaces” to the house. Theskin of the original precedent is replaced bytwo layers of filters, the inner being a seriesof round columns and the external being aseries of thin rectangular columns. Whilehelping to differentate the “servant” and the“served spaces” the columns of the externalfilter are also oriented at different angelsaccording to the space inside which createsa variety of perceptions both into and out ofthe house.
