I truly believe that there’salways something to do inRidge Meadows!
In a recent conversation with a friend they stated that they love not having to put their kids in the car for long drives out of the area, just to fi nd something to do to keep them amused. Every day of the week you can be kept busy in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge!
The next two months showcase our favourite May and June long-time annual community events including the Ridge Meadows Home Show; The Art Studio Tour; The Country Garden Tour; Pitt Meadows Day; and, the opening of the Haney Farmers Market.
There are also some special one time events taking place such as the 20th Birthday of the Maple Ridge Bandstand. We hope you’ll get out and enjoy each and every one of these.
In other news, I’m pleased to announce there is now a new Member of the What’s On! Ridge Meadows Team. Brent Edwardson of BE Photographic brings his long-time Photographic experience and multiple Photography accreditations to assist in providing quality service to our advertisers and readers. Find out more about Brent on page 14.
Thanks to all for their outstanding support of the What’s On! Ridge Meadows magazine!
Enjoy this issue!

Grief has no timeline.
VISTASRUN17th ANNUALSunday, May 4th marks the 17th Annual Vistas 10k run, 5k run/walk, and 4k family walk through the beautiful Kanaka Creek Regional Park in Maple Ridge. This exciting community event is the single largest fundraiser for the Ridge Meadows Hospice Society and has, in total, raised over $300,000 for hospice care and support in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.
This annual event draws runners and walkers from across the Lower Mainland who participate year after year in support of the Ridge Meadows Hospice Society. The timed portion includes a beautiful 10K run or 5K run/walk through Kanaka Creek Park. New to the event is the addition of the 4K Family Walk for participants of all ages (strollers and leashed pets welcome on this route!).
The Vistas Run-Walk encourages all participants to raise pledges on behalf of the Ridge Meadows Hospice Society. In addition, community All-Stars may collect pledges of $500 or more and receive special incentives. To register for the Vistas Run-Walk, or for more information, please visit www.vistasrun.com, or call 604-463-7722.
Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge communities. We have a very committed team of staff members who fa-cilitate all Palliative care and Grief support training of volunteers, plan and secure vital fundraising efforts, manage and operate our Thrift Store, and administer all operations that make up our successful team. Our Thrift Store in the heart of Maple Ridge boasts an enthusiastic team of Volunteers who help us run the store daily. We are also fortunate to have an active volunteer Board of Directors. Our palliative support services are not just centered at the McKenney Creek Hospice Residence; we also provide visitation support in hospital or at home, vigil support, caregiver support, relaxation programs, and a lending library of helpful resources. We are privileged to have a dedicated pool of trained Vol-unteers who help us deliver our palliative support, and bereavement programs. We provide training to volunteers who, in turn, provide compassionate, emotional care and support to individuals living with a terminal illness, or to their families, friends and carers. The Volunteers also provide support to the pa-tient’s family and friends at the time of death and through the journey of grief. The Ridge Meadows Hospice Society provides bereavement support for individuals coping with the death of loved ones from unexpected tragic accidents. Bereavement support is available to Children and Adults in groups or one-to-one, as well as through a bereavement walking group. All of our services are offered free of charge, but as a registered charity, we rely heavily on funding and donations from our supporters. We are also supported though fundraising events hosted by the society. For all enquiries or to volunteer, please contact us at www.ridgemeadowshospicesociety.com, or call 604-463-7722

Meet the Ridge MeadowsMinor Baseball Association
Spring and Summer Baseball is a time honored tradition within the communities of Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge. For over 59 years, the Ridge Meadows Minor Baseball Association has provided both community and competitive baseball programs, with a storied history of producing champion teams and Major League baseball players, such as Larry Walker Jr.
2014 marks the 60th year of the association’s existence and with
the energy and passion of the association’s board, this will be another exciting season. Over the past few years, baseball throughout the Lower Mainland, including Ridge Meadows, has seen its numbers reduced. Many other community sporting options are offered, competing for mindshare. However with new leadership and a renewed focus on reviving “Baseball on the Ridge”, the sport is once again growing in Ridge Meadows.
“Our board is dedicated, our volunteers are passionate, and our brand and message is resonating within the community”, says new President Cornelius Temple. “We’ve taken feedback from our membership associations, as well as feedback from our parents, players and others, and have worked very hard to develop a plan to meet the needs of families and players.”
The current RMMBA Executive knows that parents want consistently delivered, quality programs. With a volunteer base that changes every year, it can be a tall order to provide consistency. “I asked our core baseball team, led by Greg Bodnarchuk and Pete Davey, to take on the challenge of developing the right level of programming and program delivery our members are asking for and expect. They have taken this challenge full on, putting in tremendous time and effort with results that I can only describe as outstanding”, said the new President.
From mid-January to mid-March, the association offers indoor development sessions for U7 and higher players. “The Barns”, as they

are called, has been a year-over-year success. The Super-7 development camps, targeted towards Mosquito players, is a great ice breaker. This program is hosted by many alumni of Ridge Meadows who are currently playing in the LMBA. Great to see these young men give back to their community.
Along with regular season games, the association offers “Friday Night Lights”, which is a weekly session for coaches and players to come learn while playing the game they love in a non-competitive and engaging environment.
Our strategy for 2014 is engagement. The association is participating in various community events and partnering with local schools to increase awareness and interest in baseball. We’re also committed to
developing strong relationships with organizations like KidSport, to ensure all kids who want to play, can play. Last but not least, we’re keeping FUNdamentals as a key theme in everything we do.
“Kids simply want to be outside playing a game they love and having a tremendous amount of fun doing it. Sounds like baseball to me”, said Cornelius.
If you want to see great baseball, you don’t have to go any further than your local Ridge Meadows baseball park

Helpful Drycleaning advice from Brenda at West Ridge Drycleaners:
Call: (604) 459-1147 www.westridgedrycleaners.comwww.facebook.com/westridge.drycleaners
In West Ridge Centre at Lougheed & 207th Street #13 20691 Lougheed Hwy, Maple Ridge
Hours: Monday - Friday 7am to 6pm • Saturday - 9am to 5pmSame Day Service if dropped off by 10am!
It’s important you get the wedding dress to the drycleaner as soon as possible after your special day.
Alert the drycleaner to any stains - a drop of bubbly, a smudge of lipstick from that fi rst kiss - as well as to any loose stitching. Also, point out any ornaments that were glued on, rather than sewn on (these pieces are prone to fall off during the cleaning process). Knowing about all of these in advance will ensure the drycleaner can give your dress the best possible care.
Once it’s cleaned, ask to have your dress wrapped in acid-free tissue paper and packed in a special acid-free box, which is best for long-term storage. Leaving items in the plastic drycleaning bags are never a good choice for long-term storage of any garment. The plastic bags contain chemicals that over time break down and can stain or scent your garment. Even if you don’t detect an odor or stain, the chemicals can still seep into the material. When you next take it to be drycleaned, the chemicals for cleaning will combine with the plastic’s chemicals, and can ruin the clothing.
Alternatively, you can also hang the dress by the bodice. Onto the inside waist area, simply sew in straps that are a bit shorter than the bodice, then place it on a padded hanger and wrap it in a clean white cotton sheet.
Have morequestions?Feel free to stop in and ask Brenda. With over 30 years of drycleaning and pressing experience she’s your fabric and drycleaning expert.
