Group'moves to save. jettyU Natalie Nazzari

A group formed to save an iconicEsperance landmark will pull twobig moves this week after launch-ing a popular campaign to save oneof three wooden jetties left in theState.

The Jetty Group will meet theEnvironment and Heritage Minis-ter Albert Jacobs tomorrow inPerth to seek a conservation orderto prevent the demolition of theheritage-listed Esperance TankerJetty.

The Jetty Group chairman DavidEltringham said the meeting waspart of a campaign to convinceEsperance Shire council that therewere "feasible alternatives" todemolishing the jetty.

He said the group aimed to prove

to Mr Jacobs that the communitywas "inadequately" consultedbefore council unanimously votedto replace the Esperance TankerJetty and had not properly investi-gated potential funding opportu-nities for its retention andrestoration.

Esperance Shire chief executiveMatthew Scott said communityengagement had been undertakenby the council "in a variety of waysover several years through sur-veys, Council Corners and work-shops", which were all welladvertised.

"Retention and restoration ofthe jetty has been investigatedthoroughly in every structuralreport, all of which are publiclyavailable, as is a timeline of justsome of the media coverage of the

Tanker Jetty's condition, assess-ments, public engagements andcouncil decisions," he said.

Mr Eltringham said the groupplanned to present a petition, with2388 signatures, to both Houses ofState Parliament seeking a conser-vation order to delay the jetty'sdemolition.

"The archaeological, heritage, environmental and culturalaspects we will present carry a bitof weight, so we're hopeful to getthat through," he said.

He hoped gaining a conservationorder would give the group moretime to complete investigationsand an engineering study afterindependently employing an engi-neer to identify ways the jetty's"critical defects" could be repairedand prepare a restoration program

to reopen the jetty to the public. The Jetty Group representatives

attended yesterday's agenda brief-ing, after formally requestingcouncillors defer the council'sdemolition order and allow alter-natives to be investigated.

"It was built to take laden trainsand, with some immediate repairs,it is more than capable of safElycarrying pedestrians. I could huladance the length of the jetty andfeel safe," Mr Eltringham said.

Mr Scott said thejetty was "near-ing the end of its useful life as farback as the 1970s".

"The Save the Tanker Je:tygroup itself was established morethan 30 years ago so the commuri-ity was clearly aware of the jetty'sdeterioration and age," he said.

Mr Eitringham said the Jetty

Group questioned whether thecouncil had fulfilled its undertak-ing with the State Heritage Councilof a regular maintenance sched-ule.

Mr Scott said the 80-year-oldstructure was 30 years past itsexpected life.

"The Jetty Group's passion forretaining a crumbling structure isevident but it doesn't change thestate of the jetty, nor does it neces-sarily represent the views of thebroader community of Esperanceresidents and ratepayers who willultimately bear the cost of the jet-ty's repair or replacement, as wellas its ongoing maintenance intothe future."

Council is scheduled to award atender for the jetty's demolition atnext Tuesday's council meeting.
