The Jetty Group will meet the Environment and Heritage Minis- ter Albert Jacobs tomorrow in Perth to seek a conservation order to prevent the demolition of the heritage-listed Esperance Tanker Jetty. The Jetty Group chairman David Eltringham said the meeting was part of a campaign to convince Esperance Shire council that there were "feasible alternatives" to demolishing the jetty. He said the group aimed to prove to Mr Jacobs that the community was "inadequately" consulted before council unanimously voted to replace the Esperance Tanker Jetty and had not properly investi- gated potential funding opportu- nities for its retention and restoration. Esperance Shire chief executive Matthew Scott said community engagement had been undertaken by the council "in a variety of ways over several years through sur- veys, Council Corners and work- shops", which were all well advertised. "Retention and restoration of the jetty has been investigated thoroughly in every structural report, all of which are publicly available, as is a timeline of just some of the media coverage of the Tanker Jetty's condition, assess- ments, public engagements and council decisions," he said. Mr Eltringham said the group planned to present a petition, with 2388 signatures, to both Houses of State Parliament seeking a conser- vation order to delay the jetty's demolition. "The archaeological, heritage, environmental and cultural aspects we will present carry a bit of weight, so we're hopeful to get that through," he said. He hoped gaining a conservation order would give the group more time to complete investigations and an engineering study after independently employing an engi- neer to identify ways the jetty's "critical defects" could be repaired and prepare a restoration program to reopen the jetty to the public. The Jetty Group representatives attended yesterday's agenda brief- ing, after formally requesting councillors defer the council's demolition order and allow alter- natives to be investigated. "It was built to take laden trains and, with some immediate repairs, it is more than capable of safEly carrying pedestrians. I could hula dance the length of the jetty and feel safe," Mr Eltringham said. Mr Scott said thejetty was "near- ing the end of its useful life as far back as the 1970s". "The Save the Tanker Je:ty group itself was established more than 30 years ago so the commuri- ity was clearly aware of the jetty's deterioration and age," he said. Mr Eitringham said the Jetty Group questioned whether the council had fulfilled its undertak- ing with the State Heritage Council of a regular maintenance sched- ule. Mr Scott said the 80-year-old structure was 30 years past its expected life. "The Jetty Group's passion for retaining a crumbling structure is evident but it doesn't change the state of the jetty, nor does it neces- sarily represent the views of the broader community of Esperance residents and ratepayers who will ultimately bear the cost of the jet- ty's repair or replacement, as well as its ongoing maintenance into the future." Council is scheduled to award a tender for the jetty's demolition at next Tuesday's council meeting. - L I1i . , L •: : I " r.
