Bob White Park...

Upper Merion Township is putting its green efforts to work - - again! Residents will see a few goats at Bob White Park this year eating invasive species and plants, thanks to a9-year-old business calledGreen-Goats.com. Larry and Ann Cihanek started this unique business after realizing that it was good for the goats, good for the earth, and good for a park's budget as well as park attendance. The Cihanek's realized through their research that goats were the only non-harmful solution to weed control. The business now has 115 goats and this year they will have goats munching away at more than twenty sites in five states. Bob White Park will have about 25 goats arriving in May.

The objective is for the goats not to just clear a site but eliminate invasive plants such as: poison ivy, multiflora rose, knotweed, and kudzu, and a long list of others. Bill Schutter, Superintendent of Parks and Shade Tree, says "the Green Goats will save the township money on equipment rental." The goats will clear 95% of the leafy matter less than 6 feet tall by October. "The goats are able to get into the undergrowth in ways a machine can't easily do," says Schutter.

...Got Goats?

A double fence will protect the goats from the public. No one will be able to touch, feed, or pet the goats. (You could get poison ivy on your hands).

Bob White Park will reap the benefits of "green" goats after Earth Day; the goats will be introduced to the residents at this fun annual event on April 23. Please visit http://www.green-goats.com/ for more information. Goat questions? Call 845-876-4438 or 845-514-0510

Since 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, many national organizations have been working to improve their communication systems. Upper Merion Township residents have endured challenging weather conditions in the last few years. The Media Communications Advisory Board posed: How are emergencies communicated to the public? Police Chief Tom Nolan and Fire Chief John Waters were invited by the MCAB to share their perspectives on how emergencies in the township are handled. The Public Information Office researched the following information so that residents can stay informed and get connected.

Emergency Communication"Making the Connection to

system powered by Everbridge. Residents and businesses are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this alert system because it can provide information about emergencies, severe weather, crime alerts, and disasters in Upper Merion Township & Montgomery County.

It's simple to register! When you click this link , you will be first asked

to create a profile, consisting of your name, email, and any texting device information on how you want to be notified. Next, you will be asked to put in your home location so the system will know where you live for specific alerts. Finally, you will come to an Alert Section that allows you to customize the specific alerts for which you want to be notified. Residents can also sign up for notifications in surrounding counties: each notice would need to be set up separately.

Phone Scam WarningOver the past year, there has been an increase in phone scams targeting township residents. Two of the most common ones are the IRS scam and the grandparent scam. Please take time to read about these and ways to prevent becoming their next victim.

An aggressive and sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers has been making the rounds throughout the country. Callers claim to be employees of the IRS, but are not. These con artists can sound convincing when they call. They use fake names and bogus IRS identification badge numbers. They may know a lot about their targets, and they usually alter the caller ID to make it look like the IRS is calling. V ictims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation, or suspension of a business or driver's license. Victims may be told they have a refund due to try to trick them into sharing private information. If the phone isn't answered, the scammers often leave an "urgent" callback request.

Call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill.

Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.

Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card.

IRS-Impersonation Telephone Scam

Remember, the IRS will never:

1)

2)

3)

5)

Grandparent Scam

Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.

Threaten.

In this scam, a grandparent receives a phone call (or sometimes an e-mail) from a "grandchild." If it is a phone call, it's often late at night or early in the morning when most people aren't thinking clearly. Usually, the person claims to be traveling in a foreign country and has gotten into a bad situation, like being arrested for drugs, getting in a car accident, or being mugged and needs money wired ASAP; the caller doesn't want his or her parents told.

Sometimes, instead of the "grandchild" making the phone call, the criminal pretends to be an arresting police officer, a lawyer, a doctor at a hospital, or some other person. And we've also received complaints about the phony grandchild talking first and then handing the phone over to an accomplice who further spins the fake tale. We've also seen military families victimized: After perusing a

soldier's social networking site, a con artist will contact the soldier's grandparents, sometimes claiming that a problem came up during military leave that requires money to address. While commonly called the grandparent scam, criminals may also claim to be a family friend, a niece or nephew, or another family member. To avoid being victimized:

-Resist the pressure to act quickly

-Try to contact a family member to determine if the call is legitimate

-Never wire money based on a request made over the phone or in an e-mail

Don't answer phone calls from unfamiliar phone numbers. Let those calls go to your voice mail and decide after listening whether you want to call back.

Never provide anyone with personal information such as bank accounts, social s e c u r i t y n u m b e r s , o r p e r s o n a l identification numbers (PIN).

If you get a call saying you're a winner, don't pay any money to collect a prize. A legitimate sweepstakes will never ask you to pay to collect your winnings.

Never wire money to anyone with whom you are not familiar.

Remember that old saying, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

When in doubt, call the police and ask them.

and carbon monoxide emissions, only use a barbeque grill outside. Never use gasoline to start the fire. Never add charcoal lighter fluid once the fire has started. All grills should be a minimum of ten (10) feet away from a house.

Properly storing flammable liquids and home chemicals. Never store propane indoors. Make sure that gasoline, cleaning fluids, and chemicals are well-marked, out of reach of children and pets, and stored in a cool, dry place outside the house.

Cleaning up all work areas in the house. Put dangerous tools, adhesives, matches and other work items out of any child's reach and keep chemicals under lock and key.

Springtime Safety Tips

With a new season upon us, the Fire Marshal's Office suggests that "spring cleaning" take on an additional meaning which will protect your family and property. Take a few minutes to look around your home and yard for unsafe conditions and dangerous materials, this could involve:

Checking and removing hazards from each room of the home, including the attic, basement, garage and the storage shed in your yard.

Making sure all doors and windows open easily and are accessible for fast escapes.

Planning a home escape plan. Sit down with your family and make sure that everyone knows what to do in the event of a fire. Make sure you have two ways out of every room and that you have a

meeting place outside the home for the whole family. Practicing the escape plan. Even the best plan is no good if you don't practice it!

Make sure your street numbers are posted properly and are visible from the street.

Making sure you have a working flashlight and battery-powered radio for the approaching storm season.

Checking for water leaks, especially near electrical appliances.

Checking for adequate clearance between heating appliances and combustibles.

Replacing frayed or damaged appliance cords, wiring, fuses, or breakers.

Checking fire protection and safety equipment. Cleaning, testing and replacing batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

Making arrangements to take yard debris and paper and magazine stacks to recycling centers.

Checking your propane barbeque grill hose for cracks and leaks. Due to fire hazards

Preventing Stormwater PollutionAerate Your Lawn!

The simple task of aerating your lawn has tremendous benefits for grass and helps to reduce stormwater runoff and the associated pollution and flooding concerns.

Aerating your lawn will help to establish a deeper rooting system. This will promote groundwater recharge, reduce soil compaction, increase grass health, and allow your lawn to be more tolerant to droughtconditions.

A core aerator is recommended (see diagram below). Core plugs will be evident on the surface but will break up quickly and fill in the new holes with loose soil, which is ideal for new root growth. Spike aerators are not recommended as they poke holes while compacting soil at the sides.

Core aerators are inexpensive and can be rented or purchased. This should be done one to two times per year and when the soil is moist to provide the best penetration. Be careful not to damage underground pet fence wires.

Plant vegetation that is native. It will withstand drought conditions and require less watering than non-native species.

Start a compost pile! Composting recycles yard waste, reduces trash, and results in great soil for your garden, flowers, or yard.

Test your soil to determine fertilizer need. Contact Penn State University’s Cooperative Extension in Montgomery County to request a soil test at 610-489-4315 or visit

If you do need to fertilize your lawn, never apply more than is recommended – too much can burn your lawn. Do not fertilize before a rain storm.

www.howtocompost.org/

http://extension.psu.edu/montgomery

Use mulch around plants & trees to reduce water evaporation from the soil, but never cover the base of a tree trunk.

Water your lawn in the morning or evening to prevent excess evaporation. Core aerate and over-seed with deeper rooting grasses such as fescues.

Keep storm drains free of debris and vegetation.

Preventing Stormwater Pollution

A rain barrel is a rainwater collection system that stores rooftop runoff to be used for irrigating gardens and lawns, while conserving water!

Can I Use Rain Barrels?Cisterns, Rain Barrels, Vertical Storage and similar devices have been used for centuries to capture stormwater from the roofs of buildings. Capture and reuse encompasses a wide variety of water storage techniques designed to “capture” precipitation, hold it for a period of time, and reuse the water. Storage/reusetechniques can be useful in urban areas where there is little physical space to manage stormwater. Be sure to prevent mosquitoes by screening any openings.

Rain Gardens are bioretention areas, slightly graded to retain water, and filled with native plants. These areas attempt to reproduce the physical, chemical and biological processes of the naturalenvironment to create a more ecient, on site, water treatment area. The incorporation of plants, mulch, and loosened soil introduces natural biologicalprocesses that provide two important functions: (i) water quantity (flood) controls; and (ii) water quality improvement through removal of pollutants and nutrients associated with runoff. Rain Gardens gather and store runoff rainwater until it can evaporate, be used by plants, or soak into the soils. This inltration is important to recharge groundwater for human consumption and for maintaining stream base flows.

An extra benefit of rain gardens isthey look great too!

Stop or reduce use of pesticides and herbicides. Pull weeds after a rain event for better and easier results.

Wash your car at a facility that captures and reuses its wash water. If you wash you car at home, do it in the grass.

Repair car leaks. Oil and other substances are carried to the stream by rain. Park in the garage if available.

Keep gutters and downspouts clean. Clogged gutters can harbor mosquitoes and create water nuisances. In wooded areas this often needs to be done 2-3 times per year.

Use low-flow toilets and fixtures. Check for leaks and repair when needed. Leaky toilets can cause pre-mature failure of on-lot septic systems.

Have your septic tank pumped out regularly (approx. every 2-4 years).

Raise your mower height to at least 3 inches for a healthier lawn that will slow down and reduce runoff.

Options for Electronics Recycling

I.T. Spring Clean

While you are spring cleaning, the IT Department suggests that you clean up old emails and files on your computer. Determine which files, folders, or emails, can be deleted. A few things to remember:

1. Review your emails and delete old or useless emails. Remember to delete items from your trash or deleted bin and your sent items.

2. Review any folders and files you store on your hard drive and delete them if they are old.

3. Make sure that you have a backup of important items on your hard drive such as photos, tax returns, and bank statements.

4.Use a keyboard brush to clean out the particles between your keys. (Turning your keyboard upside down and gently hitting the bottom does the trick also.)

The state's Covered Device Recycling Act prohibits televisions, computers and anything that connects to a computer from being picked up as trash. Contracted haulers may offer electronics pickup for a fee. Montgomery County recycling officials recommend the following options for drop-off electronics disposal:

BEST BUY RETAIL STORESBest Buy Pennsylvania stores no longer offer free recycling drop-off of TVs and computer monitors. Residents may still schedule a TV pickup for $99, according to Best Buy's website under "TV and Video Haul-Away Options." The stores still accept computers, printers, peripherals and various electronics at no charge and with no purchase required. Check the website for details.

SALVATION ARMY THRIFT STOREThe store accepts working TVs of any size and working computers and electronics.671 Bethlehem Pike, Montgomeryville, PA 18936215-631-1570
