C a r l a S h o w e l l - L e e , C h i e f Information Officer for Upper Merion Township, leads a team who strive to raise awareness and understanding of community interests and activities, while distributing content through the township's multi-media outlets. They accomplish that goal through a variety of ways.

Upper Merion's Government Access Channel has provided programming since 1996, and over the years we have produced award winning television shows. This 24/7 community service channel is found on Verizon (Channel 33) and Comcast (Channel 22). UMGA-TV's Community Bulletin Board enables residents to publicize local events. These productions are enhanced with special graphics and broadcasted multiple times throughout the day. The Board of Supervisors meetings are televised live and rebroadcasted until the next scheduled meeting. UMGA-TV produces several PSA's and original programs; the longer formatted magazine shows are produced, written, voiced, and edited by the township's television staff or professional consultants.

Communication is Key

The township website archives all electronic and print publications. Residents are encouraged to supply content for many of our media outlets and to subscribe to the E-Newsletter by entering an email address under the Quick Links section of the website. Facebook, Twitter, Vimeo, and Instagram icons, placed on the front page of the website, keep our visitors up to speed as we disseminate (through tweeting, posting and sharing) vital information to those who electronically receive their news updates.

More ways of communication are expected to be added in 2015-2016. The Upper Merion Township LED Message Board will be located at the intersection of Henderson Road and West Valley Forge Road this summer, enabling the township staff to display timely information. The Public Information Office is also installing a large internet television monitor to be mounted on the wall outside Freedom Hall, inside the Township Building. The information on the monitor will include social media updates, news releases and multi-media content tailored for visitors 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Public Information Office is always looking for innovative ways to communicate with township citizens; please share your

ideas at [email protected] when we know better, we do better!

On the Lookout! Are you riding your bike with a helmet? The Upper Merion Police Department is looking for you. Words MatterFrom time to time police officers hear parents telling their children, if they don't behave the police are going to arrest them. We all know how difficult being a parent is, but research has shown that statements like these make children afraid of the police. As part of a new program, the Upper Merion Township Police Department will now give parents a small card as a gentle reminder to explain that the police want the children to come to them if they need help and to not run in fear. The card encourages the parent to stop and introduce the child to the officer.

Dear Parent or Guardian,

I know there is no tougherjob than being a parent.

Do you know that when you tell your children that I will arrest them if they are bad, you have made your child afraid of me?

If your child gets separated from you, is scared or in danger, I would love to be the person your child looks to for help.

Next time you see a police officer, think about introducing your child. We want to be their friend.

Greener Grants to support stream restoration. Upper Merion Township acted as the grant sponsor for the Spr ingbrook r e s iden t s ' g ran t application. UMT's leaders and experts were critical in receiving the $78,570

Crow Creek RestoredStreams have always been used to meet human needs and when activist, residents and a supportive local government work with the state government, streams can be restored. Many years ago, Indians used streams for footpaths, drinking water, and fishing because walking a stream was easier than walking through a forest. Today the need for streams have changed; Springbrook residents want a free-flowing, natural stream that would b e v i s u a l l y b e a u t i f u l a n d environmentally friendly for animals and plants. So, for the first time since the 1790 ' s , t he Sp r ingbrook Homeowners Association, with support and guidance from Upper Merion Township officials and the Pennsylvania Department of Dam Safety, decided to remove Upper Croton Lake Dam.

But dam removal is a complex and expensive undertaking. Fortunately, Pennsylvania provides Growing

Growing Greener Grant for the dam r e m o v a l . T h e r e s i d e n t s o f Springbrook Lane matched that amount for the planning, design, permitting, and construction.

The Upper Croton Lake Dam was removed in April 2015. For the first time since the 1790's, industrial-

looking, unnatural dams are gone and Crow Creek has been restored to a beautiful, natural, free-flowing stream. When activist residents and a supportive local government work with state government, streams can be restored to meet current human needs.

Congratulations BCA Recipients

2015 BCA Scholarship Winners

Recipients of the Board of Community Assistance (BCA) grants and scholarships were recognized on June 23, 2015 at a private reception at the Valley Forge Casino Resort. The Board of Community Assistance was established by the Board of Supervisors and Valley Forge Casino Resort to provide grants to organizations that serve Upper Merion residents and awards scholarships to high school seniors from Upper Merion Township who are continuing their education. All scholarships, which vary in amounts, depend on the number and qualifications of the applicants. This year the BCA awarded a $10,000 and a $5,000 scholarship to two senior students. The $10,000 scholarship, known as the General von Steuben Scholarship, is the largest scholarship awarded during the BCA's three year history. The $5,000 scholarship is named after former township manager Ronald G. Wagenmann. More than $145,000 was granted to 68 recipients: 38 community organizations and 30 scholarships. "It was a pleasure to see so many important organizations and deserving students being honored," said Supervisor Greg Waks. Visit www.umtownship.org for more information. Check the UMGA-TV programming schedule for the dates and times for the BCA awards presentation.
