Bartoli, and new interpretations of “Ave
Maria” and Leonard Cohen's “Hallelujah.”

42nd Street, ingenue Peggy Sawyer saves
a Broadway show from closing when the
show’s leading lady breaks her ankle.
Peggy learns the role in 36 hours, goes
out a youngster, and comes back a STAR.
While this scenario may seem outlandish,
it perfectly embodies the ultimate theat-
rical mantra “The show must go on!”
We’re seeing many shining examples
of this centuries-old theatrical credo across
all genres in the arts world during the
pandemic—from theater and opera com-
panies that have been providing audiences
with a steady line-up of streaming produc-
tions since their stages went dark, to
museums that are bringing their exhibits
outdoors, to singers and musicians whose
street performances and virtual concerts
provided hope and healing during the
darkest days of the pandemic.
#PBSForTheArts, a multiplatform cam-
paign from PBS and The WNET Group,
celebrates the resiliency of the arts in
America during the COVID-19 pandemic
shutdown and reopening, fea-
turing new performing arts
content filmed within the con-
straints of the pandemic. The
variety of programming across
broadcast and digital platforms
showcases the devastating impact of the
pandemic to the arts industry and looks
at the ways arts organizations have adapted
and evolved to meet the moment.
The collection of #PBSForTheArts
content will air on THIRTEEN and stream

the U.S in the 1950s, introducing Amer-

Their first performances were latenight

they danced on a twelve-by-twelve stage
made of plywood with the audience
perched on folding chairs. Today, the
Company performs for sold-out audi-
ences around the world, from Tokyo to
Texas to New York City’s Joyce Theater.
Their flamboyant style and impeccable
ballet technique have won over balleto-
manes and critics alike, and earned
them a passionate cult following.

FOR NEARLY 50 YEARS, Les Ballets
Trockadero de Monte Carlo—the inter-
nationally acclaimed, all-male comic
ballet company—has delighted critics
and audiences alike with their witty,
flamboyant send-ups of Swan Lake and
other ballet classics. Before every
performance, these talented
male ballerinas heap on
makeup, don tutus, and
emerge from the
wings to perform the
great female roles of
classical ballet—in
pointe shoes.
As culture wars ignite
over gender fluidity and
LGBTQ rights, the story of the Trocks—
as they are affectionately known in the
dance world—could not be more relevant.
The Company’s superb artistry and irre-
sistible comedy combine magically to
break down entrenched stereotypes and
prejudices—one pirouette at a time.

Philip Martin-Nielson, who is autistic,
was bullied as a child as he had no lan-
guage skills and an enormous obsession
with ballet. “I was teased every day, made
fun of every day, hit every day. Ballet was
the only place where I was able to dry
out the tears,” he says in the film. At 23,
he is a soloist with the Trocks, acclaimed
for dancing Odette in “Swan Lake.”
Having emerged from under the
shadow of a hyper-masculine father,
Duane Gosa is keenly aware of the image
he projects as a Black male ballerina.
“Being in a company like the Trocks where
I can freely be Black and gay and a dancer
onstage is a great thing for young
people to see. I’m fortunate to
show them this is possible,”
says Gosa, whose signature
role is the uproarious
“Dying Swan” solo.
We also meet Albie
Pretto, who was frus-
trated by the limitations
of conventional male
ballet roles. “At the tradi-
tional ballet companies,
men end up dancing behind
the girls, just partnering
them. I felt that wasn’t enough
for me,” he explains. “There is some-
th ing rea l ly empower ing about
performing in drag.”
Kevin Garcia was 12 years old when
he first discovered the Trocks. “It was
like seeing heaven open up,” he says.

The New York Times “Kids” column
praised the series debut last summer,
calling it a refreshing, much-needed “cul-
tural fix” as many arts institutions remained
closed. “This television series has not only
public broadcasting’s bona fides, but also
a mission to help prepare campers ages
5-10 for school,” the column noted.
Common Sense Media gave Camp TV
a rave review and an A+ in the “Educa-
tional Value” category, noting, “This series
offers unique learning opportunities from
presenters with different kinds of teach-
ing styles and subject matter. Kids (and
even some parents) will learn a lot from
this well-rounded series.”
“Camp TV and our other popular
instructional learning series Let’s Learn

says Sandra Sheppard, Director and
Executive Producer, Kids’ and Media
Education at The WNET Group. “We
recognize that there are many kids who
may not have access to the Internet, day
camps, or adequate technology. As a
public media provider, we know that
our most important mission is to fill that
gap and reach children and their families
with dynamic educational content.”

Nature: The Bat Man of Mexico
Wed 30th, 8 p.m. • pbs.org/nature
SINCE ECOLOGIST RODRIGO MEDELLIN first
kept bats in his bathroom as a child, he has
dedicated his life to saving them. Now Mexico’s
most famous export, tequila, is at stake. Medellin’s
beloved Lesser long-nosed bat is crucial to the
liquor—it pollinates the plants the drink is made
from. To save these bats from extinction, Medel-
lin must track the bats’ epic migration across
Mexico, braving hurricanes, snakes, and seas of
cockroaches. David Attenborough narrates.© AMY COOPER
