At 88, hes not tooold to sing ordance. In fact, legendarycomedian Dick Van Dyke, contributing an uncreditedcameo in Disneys Alex-ander and the Terrible,Horrible, No Good, VeryBad Day, charmed starJennifer Garner whilefilming a scene together. It was a thrill for me,
says Garner, who plays momKelly Cooper in thisadaptation, opening Friday,of Judith Viorsts classicchildrens book. I asked himto sing Chim Chim Cher-EEwith me, and he did, sheadds happily, referring toVan Dykes chimney-sweepsong in Mary Poppins(1964). It was very exciting. He was lovely and kind andgracious and very funny. Hewas so quick on his feet!Jen really went to town
they were dancing at onepoint! director MiguelArteta recalls. I turn aroundand I see Dick Van Dyke andJennifer Garner doing adance for the kids who werein the audience at achildrens-book reading inthe film. His energy iscontagious.Van Dykes cameo most
likely came about, Artetasays, through one of thefilms producers, Sean Levy, who had worked with himon the Night at theMuseum movies, and I thinkthat had a big effect for himto trust us. But, man, I tellyou when I got a phonecall from Dick Van Dyke ona Sunday morning [to intro-duce himself], I was totally
starstruck! And to be sittingon a bench on a set, askinghim about making [the 1968movie] Chitty Chitty BangBang I felt like I was 8years old again!Steve Carell, who plays
dad Ben Cooper in the film, did not have scenes with the
comic great, however. I didnot meet him, no. I wouldhave loved to have met DickVan Dyke. As a comedian,he says, I cant specificallysay how he influenced me,but he did.Arteta has a theory.
Dick is one of the few
comics who can be reallyfunny playing a nice guy. Most comics come from asarcastic or darker place. But it's much harder, whathe does, to make comedyout of loveliness andniceness.
