In fact, legendary comedian Dick Van Dyke, contributing an uncredited cameo in Disney’s “Alex- ander and the Terrible , Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” charmed star  Jennifer Garne r while filming a scene together. “It was a thrill for me,” says Garner, who plays mom Kelly Cooper in this adaptatio n, opening Friday, of Judith Viorst’ s classic children’s book. “I asked him to sing ‘Chim Chim Cher-EE’ with me, and he did,” she adds happily, referring to Van Dyke’s chimney-sweep song in “Mary Poppins” (1964). “It was very exciting. He was lovely and kind and gracious and very funny. He was so quick on his feet!” “Jen really went to town — they were dancing at one point!” director Miguel Arteta recalls. “I turn around and I see Dick Van Dyke and  Jennifer Garne r doing a dance for the kids who were in the audience” at a children’s -book reading in the film. “His energy is contagious.” Van Dyke’s cameo most likely came about, Arteta says, through one of the film’s producers, Sean Levy, “who had worked with him on the ‘Night at the Museum’ movies , and I think that had a big effect for him to trust us. But, man, I tell you — when I got a phone call from Dick Van Dyke on a Sunday morning [to intro- duce himself], I was totally starstruck! And to be sitting on a bench on a set, asking him about making [the 1968 movie] ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ — I felt like I was 8 years old again!” Steve Carell, who plays dad Ben Cooper in the film, did not have scenes with the comic great, however. “I did not meet him, no. I would have loved to have met Dick Van Dyke.” As a comedian, he says, “I can’t specifically say how he influenced me, but he did.” Arteta has a theory. “Dick is one of the few comics who can be really funny playing a nice guy. Most comics come from a sarcastic or darker place.
