Liturgy Notes

FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST Mark's Gospel account today is built on a double astonishment or amazement: the neighbors and family of Jesus are astonished that he taught in the synagogue with wisdom and worked powerful signs. Jesus, in turn, is amazed that they have no faith in him because they know his origins, not because of any fault with his teaching or ministry. As with many of Mark's passages, we get a rather intimate glimpse here of the human part of Jesus' two-fold nature. To reinforce his point, Mark tells of Jesus' return to his native place, and further points out that he is in the midst of his own family members there. From the very people he expected the most, Jesus received the least. In the day of the Gospel's writing, Mark was attempting to illustrate a lesson to the house of Israel: the God of the covenant expected the greatest faith from the house of Israel, but often received the least. This is a good source for reflection on our part, we who are Jesus' followers today. For the wisdom of Christ to continue and for our lives to be seen as signs of his power, he must expect and be able to find great faith among us. Will he? Can he? Does he? Or is he, once again, amazed by its absence?

The Word in Our Lives: Readings for July 12, 2015

Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinal Time

First Reading: Amos 7:12-15 Amaziah, priest of Bethel, said to Amos, “Off with you, visionary, flee to the land of Judah! There earn your bread by prophesying, but never again prophesy in Bethel; for it is the king’s sanctuary and a royal temple.” Amos answered Amaziah, “I was no prophet, nor have I belonged to a company of prophets; I was a shepherd and a dresser of sycamores. The LORD took me from following the flock, and said to me, Go, prophesy to my people Israel.”

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 85:9-10, 11-12, 13-14

Second Reading: Ephesians 1:3-14 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens, as he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and without blemish before him. In love he destined us for adoption to himself through Jesus Christ, in accord with the favor of his will, for the praise of the glory of his grace that he granted us in the beloved. In him we have redemption by his blood, the forgiveness of transgressions, in accord with the riches of his grace that he lavished upon us. In all wisdom and insight, he has made known to us the mystery of his will in accord with his favor that he set forth in him as a plan for the fullness of times, to sum up all things in Christ, in heaven and on earth. In him we were also chosen, destined in accord with the purpose of the One who accomplishes all things according to the intention of his will, so that we might exist for the praise of his glory, who first hoped in Christ. In him you also, who have heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and have believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, which is the first installment of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s possession, to the praise of his glory.

Gospel: Mark 6:7-13 Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over unclean spirits. He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick—no food, no sack, no money in their belts. They were, however, to wear sandals but not a second tunic. He said to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave. Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you, leave there and shake the dust off your feet in testimony against them.” So they went off and preached repentance. The Twelve drove out many demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.

Stewardship Happy Fourth of July! We hope that everyone is enjoying a happy and safe holiday and summer. This week marks the beginning of our new Fiscal Year 2016, which admittedly sounds a bit hard to believe! The budget was finalized in June and as always, highlights will be provided to the parish in the weeks to come. Further, we ended Fiscal Year 2015 on a good note and look forward to reporting on those items as well in the near future. In the meantime, we turn our attention to the parish carnival which is set to kick off later this month. This is the largest fundraising event for our parish each year and exemplifies the stewardship themes of time, talent, and treasure. Everyone is encouraged to get involved in some fashion (simply stopping by to enjoy the camaraderie is a great way to support the event!). Due to the early bulletin deadline the collection figures were not available and will be updated next weekend.

John Sanders, President, Finance Council

GOD’S WORD TODAY Today’s second reading gives us a remarkable example of what the life of faith is all about. Saint Paul tells the Corinthians that he was given a “thorn in the flesh.” Scripture scholars have debated just what this “thorn” really was. Perhaps it is best that we do not know ex-actly, for each of us has our own “thorn in the flesh.” It may be chronic illness, a fractured relationship, deep disappointment, unemployment, or any number of things. It is Paul’s attitude that we are called to emu-late. When we are tempted to groan or complain about our own “thorns in the flesh,” let us remember that it is in weakness that we are made strong. This is a central paradox of the Christian life, one that is difficult to live. May Saint Paul intercede on our behalf so that we will be strengthened in faith, even in our weakness. From Saint Margaret Sunday Missal, copyright © J. S. Paluch Company

Christian Formation

Don’t Forget to Register! All of the various forms necessary for Religious Education registration for our 2015-2016 Fall sessions are available online this year. Please check the parish website to find updated Religious Education Registration forms for grades 1st through 8th and the registration form for the sacraments of Reconciliation & First Eucharist. If your child has completed grade level one and is enrolling in grade level two you must complete a separate form to register for the sacramental preparation of Reconciliation and Eucharist. This is a separate process from Religious Education class registration and has a separate schedule and fee.

Registrations and your preferred method of payment are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. New this year-a copy of the Diocesan “Form A: Annual Consent and Release” must be filled out and submitted for each student at the time of registration. Also, please note that this fall we will have three different sessions- two sessions that follow a two and a half hour time frame, and one session that follows a ninety minute time frame. As in the past, confirmation of session registration will be sent via email.

RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) program is designed to help Inquirers on their faith journey. If you or someone you know has expressed an interest in joining the Catholic Church, please contact Deacon Tim Enright, 302-378-5800, ext. 119, or [email protected].

VOCATIONS REFLECTION In today’s first reading, the author of the Book of Wisdom says, “they shall know that a prophet has been among them.” Through lives of chastity, poverty, and obedience, religious women and men throughout our Diocese serve as prophets: their consecrated lives point to the Kingdom of God, and they remind us that it’s worth giving up anything for the sake of that treasure. Do you have what it takes to live that way? If you think so, please call or write Father David Kelley, Diocesan Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations (302-573-3113, [email protected]). Be sure to visit our website: www.CalledByTheLord.com!

This weekend we hear St. Paul ask the Lord to spare him difficulties. We also hear how the people wondered where Jesus got his wisdom and power. Sometimes in life we are faced with challenges. But, as we hear in the second reading, God’s grace is enough. When we are weak, God makes us strong. Where can we use God’s strength this week? Bring the readings home by asking God to take your weakness and challenges and use them to make you strong.

Social Concerns

FOOD PANTRY UPDATE Thank you to everyone who helped fill the shelves of the Chesapeake City Ecumenical Association Food Pantry. We would not be able to feed the needy without your help. While we will accept donations of any canned goods and non-perishable food items, we are especially in need of:

*Peanut butter *Jelly *Hot cereal

Our goal is to make sure every family has enough to eat; we know that we will not be able to achieve this without the donation of so many. If you can put an extra item or two in your cart when you grocery shop for your family, that would go a long way toward keeping our shelves filled.

CCEA WELLNESS DIRECTOR The position is still open. If you are interested please call 443-553-4049 or email [email protected] for more information. Visit the CCEA website: www.ccea4u.com or follow us on Facebook www.facebook.com/CCEA4U, for information about these events and other programs.

BAPTISM PREPARATION It is always an exciting time when a family is anticipating the birth of a child, not only for the family but for our parish community as well. There are so many things to think about and prepare for during the months prior to the arrival of your child. One of those things is Baptism. Parents are required to attend a two-part Baptism PREP program. We have found that it is easier for the parents if they do this during the second trimester of the pregnancy. We offer our Baptism PREP classes quarterly on Saturday mornings at 10:30 AM. Registration in the parish is required prior to scheduling Baptism PREP. It is necessary to call the parish office, 302-378-5800, to register for the classes. You will be given the schedule of classes when you call. Please note that Baptism dates will not be confirmed until classes are completed and all information for your sponsors has been received by the parish office. Please see information below regarding requirements for godparents and sponsors for Confirmation.

Godparents and/or Sponsors for Confirmation must meet the requirements of Canon Law. The person who will fulfill one of these important roles must: Be at least sixteen years of age; Have celebrated all three Sacraments of Initiation

(Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist); Be living a life in harmony with the teaching of the

Church It is the third requirement that most often causes difficulty. It is generally interpreted to mean that a person is registered in a parish and, if married is in a valid marriage. This means that the marriage must have taken place in the Catholic Church or, if celebrated in the church of another denomination the couple must have received permission of the Catholic Church for this to take place. This generally occurs when in the celebration of marriage between a Catholic and a non-Catholic Christian the church of the non-Catholic holds particular significance for the non-Catholic party. In such a case the bishop is asked to grant a dispensation so that the wedding may be considered valid by the Catholic Church. For those who were not married in the Catholic Church and are free to do so (meaning no prior marriages requiring an annulment) they may ask to have a “convalidation” of their marriage. This is generally referred to by most as “having their marriage blessed.” It is worth noting that divorce in and of itself does not make one ineligible to serve as a godparent or sponsor (nor does it exclude one from receiving the Eucharist). The difficulty arises when there is a subsequent marriage without seeking an annulment of one’s previous bond of marriage.
