In the Catholic Tradition the role and responsibility of the priest are very important. It is not the merits of a priest or the celebrant that enables a man to conse-crate and administer the Sacrament of Christ and receive the Bread of Angels for his food. Certainly it is a privilege that has not been granted to angels. The power to celebrate Mass and consecrate the Body of Christ belongs only to Priests rightly ordained in the Church and remains in good standing with the Church.

As the Minister of God the priest uses the power of the Word of God according to His command and appoint-ment. The presence of God at the celebration and the loyalty to His Authority and Will are unconditionally explicit in this sacrament. God is the chief Author and invisible Worker to Whom all is subject as He wills, to Whom all are obedient as He commands.

In this Sacrament we ought to believe in God rather than in our own senses or in any visible sign, and with fear and reverence we draw near to this Mystery. Priests are consecrated to celebrate Mass. Priests have to fulfill this duty to God devoutly and faithfully and conduct themselves blamelessly and will be held to more perfect sanctity. It is important for us to remember that a priest clad in the sacred vestments acts in Christ’s place, and he has to pray to God for himself and for all people in a suppliant and humble manner. He has before and behind him the sign of the Lord’s cross that he may always remember the Passion of Christ. It is before him, on the chasuble, that he may look closely upon the footsteps of Christ and try to follow them fervently. It is behind him- he is signed with it- that he may gladly suffer for Christ any adver-sities inflicted by others.

The priest wears the cross before him that he may mourn his own sins, behind him, that in pity he may mourn the sins of others, and know that he is appoint-ed to stand between God and the sinner, never to become weary of prayer and the holy offering until it is granted him to obtain grace and mercy.

When the priest celebrates Mass, he honors God, gladdens the angels, strengthens the Church, helps the living, brings rest to the departed, and wins for himself a share in all good things.

Please educate our children on the role and responsibility of the priest for the celebration of the Holy Mass.

En la Tradición Católica el papel y la responsabilidad del sacerdote son muy importante. No es el mérito de un sacerdote o el celebrante que permite a un hombre para consagrar y administrar el sacramento de Cristo y recibir el pan de los ángeles para su alimento. Ciertamente es un privilegio que no ha concedido a los ángeles. El poder de celebrar la Misa y consagrar el Cuerpo de Cristo pertenece sólo a los Sacerdotes correctamente ordenados en la Iglesia y permanece en buena posición con la Iglesia. Como el ministro de Dios el sacerdote utiliza el poder de la Palabra de Dios de acuerdo con su mandato y nombramiento. La presencia de Dios en la celebración y la lealtad a Su Autoridad y Voluntad son incondicionalmente explícitas en este sacramento. Dios es el principal autor y trabajador invisible a quien todo está sujeto como él quiere, a quien todos son obedientes como él ordena. En este Sacramento debemos creer en Dios más que en nuestros propios sentidos o en cualquier signo visible, y con temor y reverencia nos acercamos a este Misterio. Los sacerdotes son consagrados para celebrar la Misa. Los sacerdotes tienen que cumplir este deber para con Dios fielmente y devotamente y comportarse fielmente para alcanzar una santidad más perfecta. Es importanterecordar que un sacerdote vestido con vestimentas sagradas actúa en el lugar de Cristo y tiene que orar a Dios por sí mismo y por todas las personas de una manera suplicante y humilde. Él tiene delante y detrás de él el signo de la cruz del Señor para que siempre recuerde la Pasión de Cristo. Está delante de él, en la casulla, que puede mirar con atención los pasos de Cristo y tratar de seguirlos fervientemente. Está detrás de él, está confirmado con él, que puede sufrir con gusto por Cristo las adversidades infligidas por otros. El sacerdote lleva la cruz delante de él para que pueda llorar sus propios pecados, detrás de él, que con piedad pueda llorar los pecados de los demás y saber que está designado para estar entre Dios y el pecador, para nunca cansarse de la oración y La ofrenda santa hasta que se le concede obtener gracia y misericordia. Cuando el sacerdote celebra la misa, honra a Dios, alegra a los ángeles, fortalece a la Iglesia, ayuda a los vivos, trae descanso a los difuntos y gana para sí una participación en todas las cosas buenas. Por favor, enseñemos a nuestros hijos sobre el papel y la responsabilidad del sacerdote para la celebración de la Santa Misa. Dios los bendiga a todos.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

Esta semana celebramos la memoria del santo patrono de los cocineros, san Lorenzo. Este español del siglo tercero fue uno de siete diáconos del Papa Sixto II, en Roma. Su ministerio consistía en repartir limosnas a los pobres. En el año 257 se pronunció una nueva persecución a los cristianos en Roma y el día 6 de agosto unos soldados romanos asesinaron al Papa y a cuatro de sus diáconos. Lorenzo, cuyo nombre significa laureado o premiado, fue arrestado tras la batalla y llevado ante el alcalde de Roma. Este mandó traer todas las riquezas de la Iglesia, pero Lorenzo ya hacía tiempo que las había vendido para dar el dinero a los más necesitados. No obstante, se marchó de la presencia del alcalde para luego llegar con él, acompañado de gente pobre y enferma, insistiendo que ellos eran las verdaderas riquezas de la Iglesia. El alcalde, furioso, lo mandó quemar sobre brazas para que muriera lentamente. Según testigos de su martirio, Lorenzo, a cierto punto dijo a sus asesinos: “Ya estoy asado de este lado, voltéenme para asarme por completo”. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As the Latin Mass evolved in the first six centuries, the central prayer, what the Greeks called the anaphora and what we call today the Eucharistic Prayer, became fairly standard almost everywhere in the West. What we now know as Eucharistic Prayer I, or the Roman Canon, took a complex shape, not at all like the fluid and spontaneous prayers of early Rome, but a real architectural construction. The city of Rome was in a terrible condition by that time, and a series of political upheavals, plagues, and invasions swept through. Not much of Rome’s former glory was left standing, except for the pope, who became a symbol of protection and hope for the troubled people. The structures of law and administration were swept away in the chaos, and the pope gradually assumed authority to restore and maintain order. Soon, the public liturgy of Rome became the city’s only glory. The Romans wanted “good order” not only in their civic life, but in their liturgy. One prayer, increasingly enriched by music (although when the music tried to overtake the prayer the pope banned musical instruments entirely) was the new rule of the day. That one prayer, the Roman Canon, was solidly in place when the first liturgical book we have, the Leonine Sacramentary of 540, was compiled. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

EYEWITNESSES

Today, the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, is a day of eyewitness accounts. The first, a vision reported by the prophet Daniel, was well known to Jesus and his apostles. The vision account was written in quite mystical and figurative language. It is a vision of heaven, powerful and memorable. There are flames of fire, burning wheels, the Ancient One, and a Son of Man. Clearly, Daniel saw something. But was it a dream? Was it real? Was it merely a clever myth? Peter wants no such confusion about his vision! We are told in Matthew’s Gospel what he and his friends James and John saw when they went up on the mountain with Jesus one day. Jesus warned the three witnesses to tell no one until “the Son of Man has been raised from the dead” (Matthew 17:9). Lest readers of one of the Gospels discount the story or simply write it off as a pious myth, Peter gives his own account of the Transfiguration of Jesus in his second letter to the church. He writes with authority, as an eyewitness. He reports this message from God concerning Jesus: “This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased,” and he assures us that the message is “altogether reliable” (2 Peter 1:17, 19). TESTIGOS Hoy, la fiesta de la Transfiguración del Señor, es día de testimonios de testigo ocular. El primero, una visión que el profeta Daniel reporta, era muy conocido por Jesús y sus apóstoles. Es una poderosa y memorable visión del cielo. Tiene llamaradas de fuego, ruedas encendidas, el sabio anciano y el Hijo del Hombre. Es claro que Daniel vio algo. Pero, ¿fue un sueño? ¿Fue algo real? ¿O fue solamente un mito astuto? ¡Pedro no quiere que su visión sea confundida de igual manera! Nos cuenta el Evangelio de san Marcos lo que él y sus amigos Santiago y Juan vieron cuando subieron un día a la montaña con Jesús. Jesús les ordenó a los tres testigos que no dijeran nada hasta que “el Hijo del Hombre resucitara de entre los muertos” (Marcos 9:9). Por si los lectores del Evangelio dan por descontada la historia o simplemente la descartan como un mito piadoso, Pedro escribe su propia versión de la Transfiguración de Jesús en su segunda carta a la Iglesia. Escribe con autoridad, como testigo ocular. Reporta este mensaje de Dios referente a Jesús: “Este es mi Hijo muy querido, al que miro con cariño”, y nos asegura que el mensaje es digno de “creer(se) firmemente”. Copyright © J. S. The Sacrament of Anointing is done upon request prior to surgery or a illness.
