THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
My Dearest Brothers and Sisters in the Good Lord,
I am composing this week’s letter and next week’s letter
on Sunday afternoon, June 25th. Neither letter to you is going to be
very long because we are entering the summer months of July and
August when vacations take place, activities slow down, and there
tends to be less about which to inform you. However, having
written that, I still have a few things to write concerning our parish
and the purpose of the parish: the salvation of souls.
First, I want to thank all of you who submitted the ballots
with your preferred suggestions which will be invaluable to me in
the eventual decisions that I will make concerning the Renew and
Rebuild Capital Campaign Projects that we MAY be able to
accomplish. In addition to all of your preferences (which I will
announce the tabulations during this weekend of July 1st and 2nd), I
have to consider what is most needed, and I have to spend
whatever amount is rebated to us (please remember, 74 cents of
every dollar donated is rebated to us on a quarterly basis while 26
cents of every dollar donated is kept by the Archdiocese of New
York for her pastoral, educational, and charitable services within
ALL ten counties that our Archdiocese comprises) in the most
prudent way possible.
PLEASE REMEMBER TWO THINGS: THE MORE
MONEY THAT IS DONATED AND REBATED, THE MORE
PROJECTS WE CAN DO and THE PROJECTS THAT WE CAN
AFFORD TO DO WILL NOT NECESSARILY BE THE
PROJECTS THAT YOU VOTED TO HAVE DONE.
I wish to thank you in advance for your support of Renew
and Rebuild and please pray for me that I am guided by God to
make the decisions concerning the projects that HE would want
for our parish capital improvements.
The Renew and Rebuild Capital Campaign begins in
earnest in early September; please pray that we can do at least a
little something to improve our Church property.
Speaking of early September, our Fifth Annual
Parishioner Appreciation Picnic will be on Sunday, September
10th, starting at about 1:00 P.M. Once again, the wonderful folks at
the Centerville Firehouse are permitting us to use their grounds for
the Picnic. I want to thank the Centerville Firefighters for all that
they do for our community and I wish to thank them in advance
for permitting us to use the beautiful setting. Please save the date
and it is completely at my personal expense because it is the least
that I can do to honor you as the most generous (in a multitude of
ways) folks that I have ever known. Please pray that the weather
will be sunny and pleasant for the fifth year in a row!!!
By the time you read this letter, I will have finished the
100 Mile Walk; as of this writing, I have walked 92 miles and
raised for the Parish (thanks to your generosity) $6,254 and
counting!!!
Independence Day is this Tuesday, July 4th as America
turns 241 years young. May God always bless America!
The Instructional Prayer Meeting this Sunday afternoon,
July 2nd, from Noon until 1:00 P.M. will be on Seminary
Formation or how a man called by God to the Sacrament of Holy
Orders becomes a Bishop, Priest, or Deacon for our Archdiocese
of New York. I WOULD ESPECIALLY INVITE MEN AND
BOYS WHO MAY BE CONSIDERING A VOCATION FROM
GOD TO THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY ORDERS TO
ATTEND THE SESSION.
I want to thank you in advance for your usual generosity
to this weekend’s second collection for the Church in Africa; they
are being sent by their bishops to do the work of the salvation of
souls in the United States.
PLEASE SAVE THE DATE FOR THE SEMI-
ANNUAL BLOOD DRIVE HERE ON WEDNESDAY, JULY
12th, FROM 3 TO 7 P.M. I plan to donate a pint of my blood as
well.
Sincerely, with prayers,
Father Bill Woodruff
(Yes, I know this letter is lengthy – HA! HA! HA!).
WHY A CATHOLIC BIBLE? Choosing a Catholic
Bible ensures that you get the whole story. A Catholic
edition includes all the Church’s sacred books, plus
there are introductions and notes to help understand
what is read. And it carries assurance that it is free of
errors in Catholic doctrine. So you get nothing but the truth.
CANNOT MAKE IT TO MASS? Do you know of anyone who
is sick, homebound, - unable to come to Mass, and would like to
receive communion at home or would like someone to come and
pray with them? If so, please call the rectory at 246-9581.
CARE OF THE SICK- If you are planning to enter the hospital
for surgery, are experiencing a prolonged or serious illness, or are
very weak due to the advancement of age, please call the parish
office to arrange for the Sacraments of Reconciliation,
Communion and the Anointing at home. Notify us or the
Catholic chaplain at the hospital so that you may be visited by the
chaplain or pastoral staff. Be sure to tell the admitting office that
you are a Catholic and a member of St. John’s parish.
DON’T CRY– Because it’s over—smile because it happened.
CYO SUMMER PROGRAMS– Golf: Sessions taught by golf
pro John Durcan. This is for ages 10 and up. Pick from one of
the following sessions: July 10 –14 or July 24—28. Cross
Country: Sign up for 1 or all five races—price is the same $10/
child and $25/adult. Kids will run 1/2 mile to 1 mile loop on
Wednesday evenings. Dates are 7/5, 7/12, 7/19, 7/26, and 8/2.
Soccer: On August 12th from 9 to 10:30 AM in conjunction with
The Mount Academy. 1 day clinic for ages 3 to 10, led by Coach
George Vizvary and The Mount Varsity Soccer Players. Speed &
Agility Training/Fitkids—(5) one hour sessions to be held on the
week of August 28th to September 1st—Get ready for fall sports!
FMI, on any of the above, please call 340-9170 Ext. 107 or visit
www.ulstercyo.net or [email protected].
JOKE– One night, a lady stumbled into the police
station with a black eye. She claimed she heard a
noise in her back yard and went to investigate. The
next thing she knew, she was hit in the eye and
knocked out cold. An officer was sent to her house to investigate,
and he returned 1-1/2 hours later with a black eye. “Did you get
hit by the same person?” his captain asked. “No,” he replied. “I
stepped on the same rake.”
PRAYER FOR LIFE
Jesus, Mary and Joseph we love you very much.
Help us spiritually adopt and protect all human life
from preborn to natural death.
Amen.

MAKING ALL THINGS NEW
God our Father, through the Gospel and the Eucharist,
You bring us together as Your Church in the
Archdiocese of New York.
Send us Your Holy Spirit, to enlighten our minds and guide our
actions as we plan for the future of parish life in this
Archdiocese.
Help us learn new ways to strengthen and revitalize our parish
communities, and to be good stewards of the spiritual and
material gifts that sustain them.
Bless our work, so that our parishes may continue to witness to
the truth of the Gospel, and be a sign of Your love for all people.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
————————————————
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING
When Jesus promised to be with us always, He wasn’t
just talking symbolically. He meant that He would stay with
us—body, blood, soul, and divinity. In fact, when we go to
Mass, we meet Jesus Himself “truly, really, and substantially
contained” in Holy Communion (Catechism of the Catholic
Church, sec. 1374). He is there every time.
We meet the One and Only Jesus: The Jesus we meet
in Holy Communion is the same person who now sits at the right
hand of the Father. How this happens is a mystery but we know
it through faith—a faith deepened by Holy Communion.
We are joined to Jesus: At Mass, we aren't’ just
spectators. By celebrating the Eucharist, we enter into an
incredible, mystical relationship with Jesus Himself. We are
joined to Christ and to each other as members of His Body. The
best way to celebrate the Eucharist is to receive Holy
Communion devoutly and frequently.
We believe in Jesus: After we hear the words, “The
Body of Christ,” and “The Blood of Christ,” we say, “Amen”
derived from the Hebrew word meaning “confirm.” Saying
“Amen” means that we believe what we are about to receive is
truly the Body of Christ and the Blood of Christ.
That makes receiving Holy Communion the most
important this we do!

“Please Pray For All Bishops, Priests, Deacons & Religious!”
"Whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little
ones to drink because the little one is a disciple--amen, I say to
you, he will surely not lose his reward."

PARISHIONERS’ COMMENT– We received a gift, therefore
you receive a gift. A note attached to a donation of $100.
PASTOR’S COMMENT– It is easier to complain than to thank
and express appreciation. It is easier to criticize than to take the
time to compliment. These are pitfalls that often include our
attitude toward God and His goodness.
