THE PRESIDENTIAL CROSS CHAT
XRAY STEVE
At a recent dinner meeting I joined in a conversation where the topic was the
relevance of Rotary, and in particular the Rotary Club of Diamond Creek, to younger
members. Admittedly I joined half way through this discussion so I may have missed
some pertinent points in the beginning but it none the less started me thinking about
our club and its’ future. We recently examined some of the activities that our club had
been involved in as well as some planned projects which I am sure creates a sense of
accomplishment for the older and longer serving members but the impression I got
from the discussion was that there was something missing for younger members or
prospective younger members. Does anyone else have the same feeling? I am sure that
we do a great job in getting the message out there about the Rotary organisation and
the Rotary Club of Diamond Creek, but are we reaching the right audience? Our club
is recognised at District level for it’s performance and community involvement and
would certainly seem to be attaining the criteria that Rotary International would
expect of a club but somehow we are falling into the perceived impression of Rotary
being for “the oldies”. Is this what is happening? At our meeting this coming Tuesday
we will be looking at e-media, and whilst it may be nice to have a “snappy” web site,
“out there” face book or whatever else that may develop electronically we have to be
very careful about the demographics. In other words – what is our market, and where
are they? Or more to the point – who are they?
I know that in the past our club has conducted a number of membership drives that
have had some limited success, and I certainly don’t want to dampen the enthusiasm
of our current Membership Director and his hard working team but maybe we need to
sit down, talk with our younger members and devise some new strategies. Us oldies
have a pretty fair idea of what Rotary means to us and what Rotary does but how
about some feedback from the younger members? What can “us oldies” tell young
prospective members about Rotary that will make them want to jump up and leap in?
And perhaps more importantly what will it be that keeps these younger members
involved in our club and involved in Rotary? This Tuesday’s meeting will be a great
forum for the new meeting the old, and I have already seen some of the ideas and
suggestions but I would like all members to also focus on how we can effectively use
these tools. There is a large market out there – we just have to find the right to reach
it! And finally – a challenge for our young(er) members: Tell us what you want from
Rotary. We may not agree but we will never find out if you don’t tell us. In fact – how
about leaving a message on our face book page!!!!!

Hi All at Rotary,
Well our trip is nearly over, and we are making our way
home.
This Pic: we got to ride on the Engine along Lake Baikal in
Russia.
The largest inland Lake in the World. 400miles long and 50
miles wide by 1 1/2 miles deep.
We are currently in Seoul and will be home soon.
See you all next week.
Regards,
Geoff & Glenda Swan.

UPCOMING EVENT NOT TO MISS
Club Meeting 2nd October
From car bombings to meeting Yasser Arafat and
making it to the summit of Mount Everest, Mark
‘Squiz’ Squirrell has experienced more than many
can dream about.
When he headed to the East Timor Crisis in 1999 he was setting out on the
adventure of a lifetime. It was a journey that would see him navigate some
of the globes most brutal war zones to deliver emergency aid and conquer
the worlds tallest mountain.
Awarded the coveted “Green Beret” in his role as a commando with the
Australian Special Forces, Squiz burned with a passion to put his skills to
good use. His enthusiastic innocence was lost as the harsh reality of life in
the emergency zone hit home. His aid work took him to countries such as
Sudan, Palestine and Afghanistan where he met child soldiers, negotiated
with rebels and narrowly escaped imprisonment.
To raise awareness he ran the Athens marathon dressed in an Afghan
burkha and put together an adventure team, comprising an Israeli and
Palestinian. To top it off, Squiz battled thin air, freezing temperatures and
malfunctioning equipment to raise the United Nations World Food
Progamme flag on top of the world. Whether you enjoy vicariously riding
the rapids of someone’s hazardous voyage through life, or whether you
want to be inspired by the determination of a man who dared to dream,
