The R&SROMES2GO is a walk test solution that
records and stores QoS and performance data
of 3GPP mobile radio networks. The results are
based on a number of selected Android-based
smartphones from different manufacturers such
as HTC, Samsung and SonyEricsson (GSM, GPRS,
EDGE, WCDMA, HSDA, HSUPA, LTE).

At a glance
The R&SROMES2GO is a test mobile phone that records
trace data of mobile radio networks. The measurement
data is time-stamped and then saved to the test mobile
phones internal memory or to a memory card. The built-in
GPS receiver also identifies the location where the mea-
surement was taken. This very practical T & M tool is there-
fore ideal for performing measurements inside buildings,
in pedestrian zones or during drive tests, even in public
transportation vehicles. The intuitive user interface allows
measurements to be displayed in the most appropriate for-mat (alphanumeric, graphical, etc.).
After the measurements have been carried out, the
measurement files can be downloaded and converted to
the *.rscmd R&SROMES data format for further evalua-
tion using the R&SROMES replay function. There is also
the option to upload measurement data instantly via FTP
or evaluate it directly using the phones replay functional-
ity. The test mobile phones can handle both voice calls
(circuit switched, CS) and data calls (packet switched, PS).
The R&SROMES2GO keeps investment costs (CAPEX)
low and includes twelve months of software updates and
support services free of charge.

Small handset
The R&SROMES2GO can be used inconspicuously any-
where, particularly when performing measurements in-
doors or on public transportation vehicles. The measure-
ment tool/system is based on a commercial cellular phone
with modified Android kernel.
Easy operation
An easy-to-use GUI makes operating the device intuitive.
Even untrained personnel or friendly users may performmeasurements.
Voice and data testing: FTP, HTTP transfer,
HTTP browsing and ping
Voice calls to any number as well as the major data ser-
vices can be tested directly on the phone in a way that re-
sembles the behavior of the end user. Even a list of sched-
uled jobs can be defined for automatic processing.
Layer 3 trace and decoding on handset
Layer 3 headers can be filtered and are displayed in real-
time. Full decoding of RRC messages is also available on
request.
IP trace and PCAP logging
Logs show header information from HTTP, FTP, DNS and
ICMP packages. Single items can be filtered and decoded.
Display and replay of measurement data
(graphical, numeric)
Measurement data is displayed for rapid, immediate analy-
sis of the measurement parameters. Recorded measure-
ment files can be replayed on the device itself.
On-device measurement file recording, FTP upload
and replay with variable speeds
Thanks to the integrated replay feature, measurements
can be immediately and directly analyzed on the device.
After file conversion a more in-depth analysis using
R&SROMES can be performed in the office.
Positioning during measurement with Google Maps or OpenStreetMaps.

Workflow Verifying measurement resultsSwitching between the different screens makes it possibleto easily check the current measurement results. Network
problems can be detected instantly, even when the mea-
surement is in progress.
Freezing the measurement display, taking a
screenshot, inserting a marker
The toolbar allows the user to insert markers or take a
screenshot of the measurement display for subsequentvisual analysis.
Stopping trace data recording
The user presses a button to stop trace data recording.
The measurement data and ring buffer data is stored in a
file. The measurement file is closed.
Uploading measurement data
Measurement files can be uploaded whenever no
measurement is in progress. The user selects the mea-
surement file(s) and selects the upload path (USB or
FTP server).
Exiting the application
The application can be closed only if no measurement data
is stored.
Detailed analysis of measurement data
In addition to checking measurement results on the fly, it
can be useful to perform a more in-depth analysis after the
measurement. This can be done by using the replay func-
tion of the device or by converting the file to the *.rscmd
R&SROMES format and performing a drilldown in theR&SROMES drive test software.
One of the main advantages of the R&SROMES2GO is
that it is easy to operate. Because the solution is based on
a commercially available mobile phone, there is no need
for special training on how to use the device or perform
measurements. Even friendly users can collect measure-
ment data in their usual surroundings. Network problemsand errors can be reproduced easily without having to set
up complicated measurement equipment. A typical work-
flow is described below.
Starting the application
The last workspace that was used is loaded, and the mea-
surement results are displayed on the screen of the mobile
phone.
Selecting a measurement job scheduling list
The R&SROMES2GO menu allows the user to choose
from a number of predefined workspaces, which are used
to configure the subsequent measurement. Workspaces
can easily be defined or designed by using the tab preview
or a special tab editor. Individual job scheduling (series
of various tasks to be executed) provides autonomous
measurements.
Starting trace data recording
The user presses a button to begin trace data recording.
A new file name is generated, and GPS data is also saved.
The status display provides storage information.

Applications andtest cases
This standalone solution is designed for T & M technicians
who are using Android-based mobile phones. When start-
ing a measurement, the last task that was run is loaded
automatically and measurement results are displayed im-
mediately on the screen of the mobile phone. In future, it
will be possible to convert the measurement files gener-
ated by the mobile phone to the *.rscmd R&SROMES
format after downloading.
The measurement task has absolutely no effect on themobile phones QoS behavior. There is no reduction in the
data throughput, even if measurements are performed in
parallel.
A wide range of test cases is supported. These can be
configured by using the quick setting for quick and easy
setup or the advanced settings for experienced users
and more complex options:

Multimix job list: a list of different jobs is compiled to
simulate a real user or to ensure all services are being

Outdoor positioning using GPS or indoor positioning on a
floor plan can be used to navigate and reference the mea-
surement to a geographical location.
