Pauls Letters

The Epistles of the Bible are all found in the New Testament. They include 21 of the New Testaments 27 books, extending from Romans to Jude. Thirteen of these Epistles were written by the apostle Paul: Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 and 2 Thessalonians, 1 and 2 Timothy, Titus, and Philemon. Within this group of Pauline Epistles is a subgroup labeled the Prison Epistles (Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon) so-called because they were written during Pauls two-year house arrest in Rome (Acts 28:3031). The Pastoral Epistles (1 and 2 Timothy and Titus) were written to church leaders and include many teachings regarding practices within the early church.

Following these writings are eight General Epistles (sometimes called Catholic Epistles, since they were written to a universal audience) that include Hebrews, James, 1 and 2 Peter, 1, 2, and 3 John, and Jude. The author of Hebrews is unknown (though many have historically attributed it to Paul or one of Pauls associates). James was one of the earliest New Testament writings and was written by James, the half-brother of Jesus (1 Corinthians 15:7). The apostle Peter wrote 1 and 2 Peter. The apostle John (the same author of the Gospel of John and Revelation) wrote 1 John, 2 John, and 3 John. The short Epistle of Jude was written by Jude, another half-brother of Jesus (Jude 1:1).

All of the known authors of the Epistles are either an apostle (Paul, Peter, John) or a family member of Jesus (James, Jude). Each of these individuals had a unique calling from the Lord Jesus that included writing letters to others. These letters, inspired by the Holy Spirit, are preserved as part of the New Testaments writings today.

EVENT TIMELINE OF THE NEW TESTAMENT

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:1,2Life Transformation Journey

Apostle Paul wrote it roughly about 56-57 A.D. Romans answers questions such as salvation, predestination, Gods sovereignty, judgment, spiritual growth, righteousness of God, etc.Paul highlights salvation only through faith in Gods righteousness: "Iam not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes... For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith" (1:16-17). Summary of Romans

The book of Romans is a Pauline Epistle (letter from Paul). The Apostle Paul wrote it roughly about 56-57 A.D. The key personalities in the book of Romans are the Apostle Paul, and Phoebe who delivered this letter. Paul wrote the letter to the believers in Rome, hence the name Romans. He wrote it to give them a concrete theological foundation on which to construct their faith and to live for and serve God effectively. The book of Romans reveals the answers to important questions and supplies information on many topics, such as salvation, the sovereignty of God, judgment, spiritual growth, and the righteousness of God. Many scholars also describe it asThe Gospel and the Righteousness of God,which can be received only by faith in the atoning death of Jesus Christ. The focus of the righteousness of God is foundational throughout the book of Romans. In fact, it is threaded through every section of the basic outline of this epistle. Paul reiterates this so that the reader may realize that salvation cannot be attained through mans good deeds but only through faith in Gods righteousness: "Iam not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes... For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith" (1:16-17). You cannot repair your relationship with God through your good deeds; this is only accomplished through faith in the perfect and finished work of Jesus Christ.Biblehub.comChapters 1-8: foundations of the Christian faith sin, justification by faith, freedom from sin, victory in Christ.Chapters 9-11: Gods sovereignty over salvation. Following are key questions answered in Romans:Why believe? What happens to real nice guys who dont? What is grace? If God has already predestined us, where does the individuals role come in?Why suffering? How to discipline our flesh? If Paul himself is struggling to control his flesh, what message does it give us?Life Transformation JourneyFAQ

Paul stresses the universality of sin:None is righteous, no, not one; 3:10Forall have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. 3:23

Slaves to Sin

All who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law 5:12b

Slaves to SinJews under the Law

4 But what is the divine response to him? I have kept for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal. 5 In the same way then, there has also come to be at the present time a remnant according to Gods gracious choice. 6 But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace is no longer grace. Rom 11Slaves to Sin - Jews under the LawAlways a remnant

I say then, God has not rejected His people, has He? May it never be! For I too am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God has not rejected His people whom He foreknew. Or do you not know what the Scripture says in the passage about Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel? 3 Lord, they have killed Your prophets, they have torn down Your altars, and I alone am left, and they are seeking my life. Rom 11

On the positive side, there is ALWAYS a small crew of Gods faithful. On the negative side, there is always ONLY a small crew of Gods faithful, till Christs second coming when Satan will be bound and Christ will rule.10

12For all who have sinnedwithout the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law.13Forit is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified.14For when Gentiles, who do not have the law,by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law.Rom 5

Slaves to SinGentiles without the Law

Those good people who die without putting their faith in Christ who may never have heard of Christ WILL PERISH. Yet here to there are the Ruths and Rahabs who have turned to God.11

15They show that the work of the law iswritten on their hearts, while conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them16on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of menby Christ Jesus. Rom 5

The Big Picture There is always (or) only a faithful remnant, till Christs comes.

There is always (or) only a remnant who have remained faithful by demonstrating faith throughout the ages. Christs leadership will reverse that.

15

The Big PicturePredestinationPredestination is based on foreknowledge. God knows in advance the choices we will make in our livesBased on that knowledge He chooses and calls those who will choose Him.

17For if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousnessreign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.Romans 5

4Nowto the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due.5And to the one who does not work butbelieves inhim who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness. Rom 4

Saved by GraceFaith

6But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in thenew way ofthe Spirit and not in the old way of the written code. Rom 7

Saved by GraceFaith

While Christ has set us free, many of us are still making ourselves captive to sin via holding on to our old ways, thinking, lifestyle etc. This limits Gods grace in our lives.

19

Saved by GraceFaith:Sin impacts graceAs discussed earlier, grace is not licence to sin, it is freedom from sin.Level of sin reduces level of grace in our lives. To increase grace in our lives, we need to be constantly on our knees asking forgiveness from God.

Sacrifice for PerfectionSurrenderI appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God,to present your bodiesas a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.Rom 12:1

SACRIFICE IS WORSHIP

12Let notsin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions.13Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, butpresent yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.14Forsinwill have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. Romans 6Sacrifice for PerfectionSurrender

Sacrifice for PerfectionRenewal of the mind

26In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words;27and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8Sacrifice for PerfectionRenewal of Mind

From the picture above and verse below:we are so sinful that we are not even capable of prayingThe Holy Spirit has to transform and filter our prayers in line with Gods will

27

24Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me fromthis body of death?25Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin. Romans 7

Paul concludes the chapter with with my flesh I serve the law of sin this is his current state.

14How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Himwhom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher?15How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of those whobring good news of good things!Romans 10Share the Gift

6Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy,in proportion to our faith;7ifservice, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching;8the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity;the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, withcheerfulness. 9Love must be sincere.Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.10Be devoted to one another in love.Honor one another above yourselves... Ch 12

Share the Love

Relationships should be strong all around as Paul describes11Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.12Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.13Share with the Lords people who are in need.Practice hospitality.14Bless those who persecute you;bless and do not curse.15Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.16Live in harmony with one another.Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.17Do not repay anyone evil for evil.Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone

35

So let's stop condemning each other. Decide instead to live in such a way that you will not cause an other believer to stumble and fall. Rom 14:13 NLT.What does the picture below indicate the futility of judging others?Share the GiftDo not Judge

Extreme righteousness of Christ. Very small difference between even saint and sinner ie. Pot calling kettle black36

The difference between the best saint and worst sinner is largely at the faith level. At the sin level the difference is hairline in front of Gods righteousness.

37

17I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstaclescontrary to the doctrine that you have been taught;avoid them.18For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, buttheir own appetites, andby smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.19For your obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, but I want youto be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil.Rom 16
