spring 2018 4www.mansfieldparks.com
It was a busy winter for Mansfield
Parks & Recreation, and we hope
you were able to be a part of some
of the fun!
Hometown HolidaysThe 2017 Hometown Holidays
celebration was a huge success,
with nearly 6,000 residents gathered
at City Hall to watch the tree lighting
and fireworks show. The following
day, the streets of Historic Downtown
Mansfield were filled for the
Hometown Holidays Parade, with
a theme of Hometown Heroes to
celebrate the police, fire and military
service members who keep our
community safe. Other events that
weekend included performances at
Farr Best Theater, a MISD benefit
concert and the Women’s Club
tour of Holiday Homes.
snowman runJanuary saw the 2018 Snowman
Run and Winter Walk, another fun
tradition to mark the season with
s’mores and hot cocoa after a brisk
5k at Katherine Rose Memorial Park.
Pond Branch linear ParkPond Branch Linear Park near
Historic Downtown is scheduled for a
grand opening in February. The trail,
which will create a walkable, ridable
trail for the downtown business
district and restaurants, begins at
the end of East Kimball Street at
Pond Street, then runs along the
creek on the west side under Broad
Street to end near Sycamore Street.
On the Kimball end, crews have
installed a 70-foot wide steel bridge
over the creek, which will connect
the downtown neighborhoods with
the trail and the business district.
A trailhead plaza next to Broad
Street features seating walls, small
columns and a 14-foot identity tower.
Plans are underway to add public
art elements to tie in with Historic
Downtown’s many cultural elements,
like murals and sculptures.
dog ParkParks & Recreation officials are in
the very early stages of developing
and constructing a long-awaited dog
park. Consultants are evaluating the
proposed site now, and public input
meetings will be held in the coming
months to obtain feedback. The
project is in its early stages and a
start or completion date has yet to
be determined. However the project
is expected to be completed in 2018.
north Main streetThe Walnut Creek Linear trail is
one of the highlights of Mansfield’s
award-winning parks system,
stretching for miles across the
city, spanning five parks, three
neighborhoods and two schools.
Starting soon, that path will extend
all the way into Historic Downtown,
connecting pedestrians and bike
riders to the excitement of the
downtown business district.
Work is now underway on the next
phase, 10-foot wide trails that will
stretch along both sides of North
Main Street from Oak Street to
Pleasant Ridge Drive and connect
the trail to Historic Downtown.
The portion of the trail that crosses
the bridge will be incorporated into
the street, with both lanes of traffic
remaining intact but narrowed to
accommodate the 14-foot wide trail.
Concrete barriers will divide the
trail from the street traffic and
keep pedestrians and cyclists safe
from motorists.
Once over the bridge, the trails will
enter Town Park on the east. On the
west side of the street, trails continue
as sidewalks until Pleasant Ridge
Drive, where walking paths end and
cyclists transition to the existing
street. The project includes trail and
roadway lighting for safety at night.
Construction on the project should
be completed in late summer 2018.
It is partially funded by the Federal
Transportation Alternatives
Program administered through the
Department of Transportation. Work
is expected to have minimal impact
to downtown businesses, as no roads
will be closed completely and most
driveways will remain intact and
untouched.
2018 MPFdC BoardThe Mansfield Park and Facilities
Development Corporation board of
directors, which oversees all parks
& recreation business, welcomed a
new member in fall 2017. Lindsay
Cadenhead lives in Mansfield
with her family and works as a
Curriculum Coordinator for Red Oak
ISD. We are excited to have her on
board and offering fresh insight to
the process. MPFDC said goodbye
to Wayne Lee, who has served the
board and our community for many
years and thankfully only leaves
MPFDC to serve on another city
board. His contributions and
dedication are much appreciated.
5 spring 2018 817.728.3680
The City of Mansfield is known for
hosting creative, fun, family-friendly
events, and it takes a lot of work and
staff hours to make each one happen.
But did you know none of these
events would be possible without
the support of area businesses?
Mansfield Parks & Recreation has
a thriving sponsorship program
that allows local businesses and
organizations to give back to the
community and help make this
city second to none in fun!
Methodist Mansfield Medical Center
has a been a platinum sponsor since
they opened over 11 years ago, and
has been thrilled to participate in
city events and projects. Their logos
can be seen engraved throughout
Elmer W. Oliver Nature Park, and
they’ve been a title sponsor to a
number of events.
“We love partnering with the city
of Mansfield’s Parks and Recreation
department because the parks are
absolutely beautiful and are home
to a wide range of natural green
spaces, beautiful trees, and walking
paths, that can improve one’s health
and wellness,” says Angel Biasatti,
Director of Community and Public
Relations for Methodist Mansfield
Medical Center. “The community
events are also family friendly,
and fun. Studies have also shown
that spending time outdoors can
reduce stress.”
In 2018, Special Events Manager
Angie Henley is rolling out a few
changes to the sponsorship program
to keep in line with current trends
and technology.
“Our citizens today want everything
digitally, and get their updates by
email, web and social media in
year. Annual sponsors also get first
option to sign up as sponsors of more
specialized, niche events, such as
Music Alley music & arts festival,
Rockin’ Kids’ Triathlon, Barks &
Rec 5k and more. Those events
have sponsor levels ranging from
$500-$2000 and can help businesses
special Events
Community Partners Make A difference
the palm of their hands,” said
Henley. “We updated some of our
sponsorship offerings to reflect
that, so rather than a logo on a
gym banner, we can thank our
sponsors in e-newsletters that reach
thousands each week. The sponsor
support allows us to keep expanding
and improving our events and
programs, so we want to do
everything we can to keep it a win-
win arrangement for everyone.”
Annual sponsorships start at $2500
and include a variety of recognition
as well as exclusive access to booth
space at major events like Rockin’ 4th
of July, which sees 8-10k visitors each
reach a more targeted audience.
“We are always welcoming new
businesses to join us as a sponsor,”
said Henley. “It’s important for them
to feel involved in the community
and get to meet new people. But it’s
also important for us to be able
to continue offering these great
experiences for our residents and
visitors, and it’s because of these
great partnerships that we are
able to make it all come together.”
For more information about the
Mansfield Parks & Recreation
sponsorship program, please

Home gardening has been on a sharp
upward trend for the last decade,
with over 42 million homes across
the US now growing a portion of their
own food in backyard and window
box gardens. Just as technology has
expanded, so has the desire to
connect to the earth, both with
growing and conservation.
“Backyard composting can be
rewarding even with minimal effort,”
said Sheila Johnson, Oliver Nature
Park Nature Education Specialist.
“It can be as easy as simply layering
grass clippings and dead leaves into
a pile. From there, nature will slowly
break down yard waste and kitchen
scraps for you. If you are interested in
composting as a hobby, you can learn
many methods to make the process
go faster. Either way you approach it,
backyard composting cuts down on
waste and results in a useful, natural
fertilizer that can help your lawn and
garden flourish!”
Johnson teaches two levels of
composting classes; Simple Backyard
Composting explains the mechanics
and beginning steps for someone
looking to add a compost bin to
their home or yard. Squirmy, wormy
composting takes the process one
step further, using live earthworms
to actually decompose and process
the waste. Yes, the worms are
included in the class enrollment fees!
certainly give residents many
reasons to care…and opportunities
to make a difference!
For more information about the
Composting or Rain Barrel classes,
see the course descriptions in this
catalog or contact Nature Education

and materials provided, to make the
process easy and fun.
Oliver Nature Park also offers Rain
Barrel classes, where participants
not only make a 55 gallon rain
barrel to take home and begin
using immediately, but they also
get a chance to learn why such
conservation efforts are so
important. Guest instructor Dotty
Woodson from the Dallas AgriLife
Extension Office guides the students
through the entire process, which
is designed for adults but can be a
fun activity for the entire family.

Sam Vickers just turned 90 years old,
but that number hasn’t slowed him
down a bit. The Mansfield resident
still builds wooden rocking horses
for his grandkids and plays cards
with his friends once a week. Most
importantly, he starts every weekday
with a stop at the Mansfield
Activities Center to participate in
the Senior Lifestyles program.
“The first time I came, my wife and I,
we were retired and just didn’t have
anything else to do,” says Vickers.
“We were new to the area and
wanted to meet some people. And
I’ve been coming ever since.”
that transport visitors to and from
home, or on any number of day trips
the center sponsors. The MAC
gymnasium also gives space for
special events and exercise classes.
Another important addition was the
partnership with Tarrant County’s
Sixty & Better Program, which helps
provide low to no cost meals for
members. In the last year, over
six thousand hot meals were served
to seniors in Mansfield. Equipment,
facilities and programs have
improved, but the community spirit
that motivated the program in the
first place is still alive and thriving.
senior Lifestyles senior Center
Celebrates MilestoneLenora Fike, 82, has been a regular
since 1986 and remembers the early
days fondly. “We didn’t have a lot of
space,” says Mrs. Fike. “But we made
our own fun! This was where my
husband and I spent so many of
our best days, and made so many
of our very best friends.”
Suzanne Newman has been the
coordinator of the Senior Lifestyles
program for the City of Mansfield
for the last 17 years and says the
success of the program has been
a team effort.
“We’ve absolutely lasted this long
because we have a dedicated staff
that really cares about the program,”
said Newman. “When you have
people that care and enjoy their
job they work harder, and it shows.
Between the staff here at the MAC,
the city leadership and the seniors
themselves, it truly is one big happy
family. It means a lot to go home
each day, knowing I’ve made a
difference in their lives, even if it
was just making them smile for
that one day.”
Mansfield’s City Manager Clayton
Chandler has been serving since
1984, almost since the center opened,
and affirms the city’s longtime
support of the programs. “Our
seniors are vital to who we are
as a community,” said Chandler.
“They represent that all important
tie to the history and heritage of our
community. Accordingly, the Senior
Services Program is one of the most
vital services that we provide.”
Services that will, by all accounts,
only continue to grow and thrive
over the next 40 years.
“I hope the senior center will still be
here in 40 more years, and continue
to have the support of the city
leaders and community that we
enjoy now,” says Mrs. Fike. “It’s so
much more than classes or games.
It helps your mind stay active, and
you can’t feel sorry for yourself when
you’re surrounded by people who are
concerned about you and want only
to make your day brighter. Being
active in the senior center helps me
see the bigger picture; it makes me
want to do more, just as so many
others here have done for me.”
‘Ever since’ for Vickers is almost
three decades, one of the longest
tenures in the Senior Center, which
is celebrating its 40th anniversary
this year. At the time it was created
the community of less than 8000
didn’t have much, but the leaders
understood the importance of
providing a safe place for its older
residents to gather. An old house
off Broad Street was dedicated, and
programs like bingo, cards, parties
and more began almost immediately.
The Senior Center, which now
operates as Senior Lifestyles out of
the Mansfield Activities Center, has
grown considerably since the early
days, with regular daily attendance
averaging around 75-100 visitors, and
over 300 different programs offered
each year, from volleyball to arts and
crafts. Notable improvements over
the years have included two buses
