challenging the potential of all who come through our doors.
Principal Message
Here we are moving through the month of November and preparing for the approach of
the Christmas season. For many communities and families this is an important time for
many reasons; one of which is the increased emphasis placed on family and spending
time together. I will reference that more in next month’s message.
During the month of November we also observe some important events. Foremost was
Remembrance Day on November 11th. During that time of the year we pay special
attention to the efforts and sacrifices of Canadians who served in World War I, World
War II, the Korean Conflict, Afghanistan, and during many peacekeeping activities and
United Nations actions around the globe. Many Canadians have served with dignity and
honour and many have paid the supreme sacrifice. What is important for all of us, and our young in particular, is that we
remember that the freedoms and rights that we often take for granted are ours because we have had the courage and
conviction to stand up and defend them when called upon. Each year we should take time to remember that and above
all appreciate the fact those rights and freedoms were earned. A prime example of those rights was very evident one
week prior to Remembrance Day when the new federal government was sworn in. We changed government because the
people of Canada decided to do so thrrough the ballot box and in four years we can decide to do it again. It was done in
a peaceful orderly manner. There are many countries in the world where that cannot be done. Let’s not forget that.
A second event that will be recognised during November in the PRSD will be Parents Matter Appreciation Week from
November 23 – 27, 2015. The Purpose of PARENTS MATTER is to celebrate parents and share what students said they
appreciate about how their parents are involved in their educational life. Focusing on the important role of parents in
education is a great idea because parents do play an important role in the educational achievement of students. We know
parents play a very important role as volunteers, coaches, supporters and resources for schools and we want to recognise
that role. In addition I want to take this opportunity to highlight the powerful role that parents can play, and a lot do, in
the achievement of students. In an analysis of recent PISA data (PISA is the Program for International Student
Assessment and tests 15 – year old students in 70 countries worldwide, including Canada) it was concluded that reading
performance is basic to achievement and that “many child-parent activities that are associated with better reading
performance among students involve relatively little time and no specialized knowledge. What these activities do
demand, though, is genuine interest and active engagement.” When parents remain connected with their children’s
education there is an obvious positive impact. I’ve always believed that and I continue to believe that. This month when
there is an opportunity for you to engage with FHS I encourage you to do that but also encourage you to engage with us
and your child’s education throughout the year. Until next time, all the best!!

By: Hannah Schaefer I see the light at the end of the hall But I’m not ready to face them at all Standing here all alone I look upon the many frames Frozen faces without names I exhale a soft groan Recognizing a face that is familiar Showing a past, portraying a killer A man who is very well known to me He was part of my family But not lost from memory Alone when he was drafted This picture shows him posing by a tank Smiling, oblivious to the higher rank Robotic like one of the many drones
Funeral of the Unknown
Moving on, I come to another scene This one not so clean Soldiers hiding behind great stones Blood splattering the ground On which many are never found Piles of bones all alone Still there till this day I moved on not able to stay Is there a family feeling the loss of the soldiers, or are they unknown? How hard they fought, and how dedicated they were Makes my heart sink and my eyes blur My soldier had a family that will feel his loss Stepping out into the light Not a person wearing white Mourning the disappearance of my father, the soldier Looking down to see my own black attire I can’t help but admire him

“FHS will be celebrating Parents Matter week in a few ways.
Students will be using their TEAM time to create personalized cards
to send home to parents. They will also be tapping into their creative
side to help create a series of images and videos that answer the
question “Why do parents matter to me?” At parent teacher
interviews on Thursday November 26th
, parents will be served a
variety of goodies made by members of some of our school
groups. They will also be able to view the parents matter digital
mosaic created by students. We look forward to seeing parents on
November 26th

Academic Results
Each year Alberta Education reports on numerous performance measures for
Alberta school divisions in a report known as the Accountability Pillar
Report. Our updated results show that 69.6% of students (combined in
grades 6 and 9) achieved the Acceptable Standard on the Provincial Achievement Tests, and, 10.3% achieved
the Standard of Excellence.
Updated results on the Provincial Diploma Exam courses show that 82.6% of students achieved the
Acceptable Standard, and 9.1% of students achieved a Standard of Excellence.
Provincial Achievement Tests and Diploma Exams are only one measure of student
achievement and results are best examined at the school level where the local context can be considered.
Each school will be sharing school results within their local community.
I wish to congratulate students, staff and parents on working so well together on improving student
achievement. Achievement Test and Diploma Exam results will be further analyzed to help inform
instructional decisions that will lead to increased student achievement.
I invite you to view a detailed summary of the division’s overall results on our website at www.prsd.ab.ca

When it comes to Your Child’s Mental Health—Parents Matter!
Mental health affects the way people think, feel, and act. One out of every five children and youth in Canada (20%) has
a diagnosable mental health disorder such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, depression, substance
abuse, and eating disorders.
As a parent, you play an important role in your child’s mental health.
How can parents nurture their child’s mental health?
The Canadian Paediatric Society recommends the following:
Help your child build strong, caring relationships with family and friends. Spend some time together each night
around the dinner table.
Help your child develop self-esteem so that they feel good about themselves. Show lots of love and acceptance;
praise them when they do well; recognize their efforts; ask questions about their activities and interests; help
them set realistic goals
Listen and respect their feelings. Encourage your child to talk about how they feel. Keep communication open by
asking questions and listening. Help your child find someone to talk to if they don’t feel comfortable talking to
you.
Create a positive, safe home environment. Be aware of your child’s media use. Be careful about discussing
serious family issues. Be a role model by taking care of your own mental health.
Let your child know that it’s okay to seek help from a counsellor, health care professional, or trusted adult, if
needed. Parents are encouraged to be aware of the services available at school and in the community and how to
access these services.
If you are concerned that your child may be dealing with mental health issues, getting help early is important. Your
doctor is an important resource who can connect your child with mental health services. You are also welcome to
contact the Youth Education Support Worker for more information on resources at FHS and in the community.

When wintry weather wafts will you be prepared?
Winter brings some special challenges and one primary concern is heavy snowfall and the ability of extreme cold to
knock out heat, power and communication services - possibly for days at a time. Emergency provisions should include
enough food, water and supplies to last 72 hours. Remember, to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, never use
portable fuel-fired appliances indoors.
Winter transportation can mean coping with ice and snow that can make navigating roads hazardous. Before traveling,
make sure your vehicle is winter ready, contains emergency supplies and ensure the gas tank is at least half full at all
times. Clear all snow from the vehicle and keep the windows defrosted. Make allowances for increased travel times
and communicate your route to others.
Before venturing outdoors check the weather and dress appropriately for the temperature and activity. Keep walkways
and driveways clear for winter visitors and Emergency Services. Recognize and treat any early signs of hypothermia or
frostbite.
Winter sports bring hours of enjoyment however continuously stay alert for dangers. Keep activities suited to
children’s age and abilities and always use maintained and properly fitting equipment, including the appropriate
helmet. Stay safe and warm, be prepared.
