Dwarsrivier Mine are surely in the process of making a huge difference in Kalkfontein when the fi rst water from new boreholes were pumped at the village this week. This is a relief, as connec-tion to De Hoop in the near future may prove to be problematic as the village was probably not taken into account because of it’s informal status. On Monday the mine management held a small function at one borehole next to the road and the government highs were also invited, but could not attend for some or other reason. (Maybe we should vote for the mine during the next election - editor). More details on page 2.

DWARSRIVIER MINEDwarsrivier brings

water to KalkfonteinOn Monday 12 October, Dwarsrivier Mine manage-ment visited Kalkfontein Village where they cele-brated the start of a long term water re cula on project.

The mine has drilled boreholes in diff erent lo-ca ons in the area with the idea to eventually con-nect it to a piping system that will provide every household with running water. The sec on where the boreholes are drilled currently have no water supply and residents cross the tar road to collect water.

Six boreholes were drilled with four yielding water. These boreholes will deliver more than 450 000 litres of water per day to residents in the area.

An unexpected hiccup in the project came when the mine wanted to start with the installa- on of pipes. Kalkfontein has not been formalized

as a se lement and the process has now been put into mo on. This is necessary so that one day when road construc on and other services are due to be installed, the water pipes will be mapped and not destroyed. This town planning process is delaying

the project’s progress, but knowing the importance of water, the mine will now put up Jojo tanks with points from which the community can collect water. This will make life easier as the distance to collec ng water will be shorter. Once the se lement has been formalized the project will be completed as planned.

Dwarsrivier Mine General Manager, Mr. Rian Burger told the community that the mine is doing this from their hearts.

Representa ves from the contractor, Greater Tu-batse Municipality and the Community Property As-socia on all had a turn to speak. Many thanks were given to the mine for their unwavering commitment.

The community was quick to bring buckets and drums to collect water from this point just a er the wet ‘sod turning’ ceremony. Mr. Remember Mmbeng-wa, SD Manager of Dwarsrivier Mine was one of the fi rst to taste the water and assure the community that this important resource is bringing new life to them. Dwarsrivier Mine commi ed themselves to this ex-tended project to deliver be er quality of life to a community close to the mine.

Robbers rampant in Burgersfort

On Wednesday morning at 2:35, three men walked into Magaba Filling Station’s bonjour shop and robbed them of an undisclosed amount of money and ciga-rette’s. (Photographs below)The men overpowered the security guard and at gun-

Last week the Engen Garage in Elephant’s Hill was robbed with the same modus operandi. (Photographs right) Three men entered the shop, held the staff at gunpoint and took cash and

cigarettes before fl eeing the scene. Anyone with information on the incidents or who can help identify the people on the photographs are welcome to contact Capt. Maepa of the Burgersfort SAPS on 082 534 8235.These are not the only incidents of crime in town. A large number of vehicle thefts and housebreakings has also occurred

Heritage Month is celebrated annually from 1 to 30 September. Heritage Month recognises aspects of South African culture which are both tangible and intangible: crea ve expression such as music and performances, our historical inheritance, language, the food we eat as well as the popular memory.

In line with the above, on the 30 September 2015 Booysendal Pla num Mine in partnership with Fedics Site Services hosted 6 primary schools at Ga Malekane community hall to celebrate heritage month.

The General Manager, Mr Willie Theron shared with the learners about the importance of cele-bra ng heritage month, that “Living heritage is the founda on of all communi es and an essen al source of iden ty and con nuity. It’s about cultural tradi on, language, rituals, our history, skills and techniques, indigenous knowledge, living with na-ture, society and social rela onships, he therefore told the learners that it is important for South Afri-cans to reclaim, restore and preserve these various aspects of living heritage to accelerate the use of living heritage to address challenges communi es are facing today”.

September is observed as Heritage month, a celebra on not only of the past, but of the contri-bu ons of the South African people in making the country what it is today.

South Africa is a heterogeneous country with so many diff erent tribes, histories; backgrounds and culture, there cannot and should not be a uniform celebra on. Variety is defi ned as a na onal asset, and the government announces themes each year that guide offi cial celebra ons.

The theme for this year’s Carnival was ‘Social Cohesion: South Africa belongs to all who live in it’.

The Primary schools that par cipated in the celebra ons were Ntake, Maphopha, Masago, Papong, Ngwanathulare and Tibamoshito.

A School which performed be er than the oth-ers in a par cular category received a trophy.

Ntake primary school received a trophy in the Dinaka category, Maphopha Primary in poetry whilst Masago Primary walked away with a trophy in Dipepetlwane.

“Let us not betray the poor masses who voted us into government by developing egocentric politics of money-loving, because by doing so we will be betraying ANC ancestry of Tambo, Sisulu and Mack Makgopa”

This was the crux of a memorial lecture by Mr Lemon Phala when he hon-oured the late Mack Makgopa at a Saturday afternoon ANC ‘political school’ held on 3 October at Morapaneng villige between Burgersfort and Moroke.

Members of the community of Ward 3 of Tubatse municipality gathered at Tlakale a’Mogase recreation garden to participate in the ‘political school’ and Memorial lecture that was graced by a trans-provincial visitation. The event was hosted in honour of the late Mack Makgopa have played a vital role in the es-tablishment of the former ward 7, now renumbered ward 3; and Mack Makogpa branch of the ANC.

Together with members of the public from sister ANC branches – namely Leolo, Madikabje and Magapatona, there were members of the alliance partners including delegates from NUM- Twickenham branch; SACP – Mack Makgopa branch; and Sadtu - Magakala B branch. The theme of the event was “Service delivery, a key to leadership”

The attendees were addressed by Cde Jeanet Mashego (deputy chair Tubat-se sub-region –ANC); Cde Ewerd Baloyi (ANC: Regional Executive Committee member – Nkangala region, Mpumalanga province, who presented and facilitated on the ANC Constitution; and Strategy and Tactics. Mr Mahlangu, the District Executive Committee member of Young Communists League (Ephraim Mogale) led the discussions on the Freedom Charter.

Mr Phala narrated political moments he spent with the late Makgopa and men-tioned that such moments consisted political debates and clarifi cation on policy matters. He continued to say: “we are not here to praise Cde Makgopa, ntepa e segwa ka ye nngwe” – loosely translation of the Pedi idiom meaning ‘we copy from existing model’. He illustrated that Makgopa demonstrated ‘selfl ess service delivery and patriotic volunteerism’ as his political life was more of putting the organizational objectives before his personal pursues.

They will have zero tolerance with motorists that have outstanding traffi c fi nes. “They can come and check their status for free at the municipality,” Traffi c Chief Victor Lekwadu explained. “If there are fi nes outstanding they can make arrangements to avoid being arrested”.

“I also appeal to drivers to treat the traffi c lights that are not working as 4-way stop streets. They should also obey the instruc-tions of the pointsmen on duty”.

Over-stepping the linePlatinum Gazette took the photograph on the right last week Friday while en route to deliver the paper. It was just before the Tweefontein Mine entrance where the red truck not only disobeyed the speed limit, but also overtook an-other truck on a solid line.

When the newspaper stopped behind the red truck at the four-way stop towards Two Rivers Platinum, it did not have a number plate and was unmarked. It continued towards Two Rivers Platinum Mine.

6 NEWS 16 OCTOBER 2015

The Rugby World Cup is progressing into the quarter-fi nal stage. The top eight teams who are still in the game are South Africa (Spring-boks), Wales, New Zealand, France, Ireland, Argentina, Australia and Scotland.

This weekend will be a knock-out round for half of the teams. South Africa will be facing Wales at Twickenham Stadium on Saturday 24 October 2015. Kick-off will be at 17:00. Australia will face off with Scotland, Ireland against Argentina and New Zealand against France.

Eben Etzebeth (lock) has been named as one of the key Springbok players to watched while Bryan Habana’s scoring of fi ve tries against the United States cannot be over-looked. Commentators has called the team a physical pack trying to redeem themselves from being outwitted by Japan in their fi rst game of the tournament.

Wales is a very fi t side with world-class talent, but has suffered a terrible run of inju-ries. On their side Alun Wyn Jones (lock) has been named as the player to watch.

The loser of the game will go home with the winner progressing to the semi-fi nals.

So far in the World Cup, Greig Laidlaw from Scotland has made the most points (60). Second is Ayumu Goromaru from Japan with 58 points. Handre Pollard from South Af-rica is in fi fth place when it comes to making the most points in the tournament. He has scored 46 points for the Springboks so far.

Bryan Habanna (Springboks) and Julian Savea (New Zealand) are tied with 5 tries each so far. A total of 231 tries has been scored over the course of the tournament and 3 drop goals has been scored.

A total of 1 881 023 people has attended matches at the various venues in England.

Platinum Gazette asked readers what they think about the Springboks’ chances this weekend.

Mnr. Doctor Masinga sê: “Hulle moet wen. Doctor soek daai Cup hier in Suid-Afrika. Hulle moet hard werk. Ek support hulle baie en hulle beter wen”.

Me.

Mr. Lesley Ndou said: “Yes, I think they will win, but not with a big margin. Something like 22-16 perhaps. Wales has been play-ing good. We’ve played well in the last two games. They should win this one. I think they’ll go through and face-off in the fi nal against Australia. It is a tough one, but if they keep the momentum, they can hopefully bring back the Cup”.

Mnr. Pieter Muller sê: “Saterdag is dit Bokke bo! Ons moet hulle ondersteun – wen of ver-loor. Hulle sal beslis teen Wallis wen. Hulle moet. Verder sal ons moet sien hoe dit gaan”.

Mr. Cain Maile said: “Japan was a warm-up. Now they are ready to go all the way to the fi nals and bring back the Cup for the third time. They will win on Saturday. I’ll watch on TV and support them”.

Mr. Thabo Riba, Mr Eleck Riba and Mr. Bongani Mdluli said: “Ja, they will win on Saturday. We like the Springboks”.

Mr. Tumisho Mphogo, Ms. Silindwe Mnisi and Mr Khutso Mnisi said: “Japan was just a warm-up for the Springboks. Now they will win against Wales. They will go all the way to the fi nals which will be South Africa vs Scotland. We’ll be watching and supporting them on Saturday while having a braai and some booze”.

Mnr.

Mr. Rulph Kgwete said: “I’m quite sure they can make it. We are proud of them and how they play. I think they will come back home with the Cup. They are in form now and Ja-pan was just a warm-up. They’ve shaped-up now. I’ll watch them on TV this weekend”.

Mr. Precious Maphake said: “South Africa will make it. Saturday’s score will be around 30-12. I’ll be watching the game at home. Spiritually I will be with them. They can go to the fi nal. It will be against New Zealand. It will be tough but we will repeat history and bring back the Cup”.

Mr. Enos Makwana said: “They will go through in the same way they played the USA. This weekend will also be a score like with America. It will eventually be South Africa vs New Zealand in the fi nal and we will win there as well”.

Mr. Choeukarema Mohlala said: “I’m support-ing the Springboks because they are South African. They are going to win. 30 – 10”.

Headman Emmanuel Mmopane said: “They underestimated Japan, but this game they will win. I’m very positive. They will win the Cup as well. I cannot wait to go and meet them at the airport when they bring back the Cup”.

Mr. Marcus Mongala said: “They will defi nitely win. It will be South Africa vs New Zealand in the fi nal. They still have it to win. Japan was a wake-up call”.

Mr. Nati Nandosi said: “I support the Spring-boks but they will lose this weekend because the left wing is their weakest link and that is where Wales will take advantage. Habanna is a key player but injuries can make us lose easily. The advantage is that they will play at their training grounds which is a little like home”.

Mnr.

Mr. Sydney Mashego said: “They will win. They will eventually bring back the trophy. I support them. They are the biggest team in South Africa”.

Mr. S. Komalo said: “The Springboks will win. They will be very strong. They will exchange a lot of players during the game”.

Right: Mr. Neo Zain said: “The Springboks have some injuries so I think they might lose this weekend, but I still support them”.

Not everyone agrees as this sms received by Platinum Gazette’s editor proves:

“This is not how we want to express our feelings. Our villages are turned into a war zone by a few unscrapulous (sic) people who serve no one’s interests but their own. It is high time that the authorities, community and the mining companies sit down together in an all inclusive meeting to seek for solutions that will last forever. The previous methods wherein the disgruntled few were addressed separately away from the community have not worked for us. The solution is to involve all the stakeholders in the community. The meeting should be held at the chief’s home-stead where a tribal resolution, binding to everyone could be reached”.

According to reports at least ten vehicles were set alight by residents of villages along the R555 road between De Hoop Dam and Steelpoort this week amid angry protests over lack of job opportunities in the local mining sector.

Still burning but...Four trucks, four buses and two cars

were set alight on Tuesday night by residents as they demanded jobs and development in the area.

The protesters claimed mining companies had failed to deliver on earlier promises to employ locals. They also burned tyres and barricaded roads with debris. Drivers were reportedly pulled off from their vehicles and ordered to run.

On Wednesday, the majority of mine workers, many of whom reside far from their places of work, did not report for duty as there were no buses travelling on the route due to protests.

Public order police had again been deployed to monitor and maintain peace in the area. Protestors reportedly vowed to continue with their protests until the Depart-ment of Mineral Resources made sure that mining companies fulfi lled their social labour and social development policy obligations as enlisted on the mining license conditions.

outside. Emergency services was called to

my linkerhand teken nie. (Inligting & foto: Steelpoort Akademie).
