Dear Year 12 Students,
It is great to see you caught up in the process of researching universities. We are especially hap-
py to see that so many of you join the university visits and that most of you have completed the
UniQuest Assignment. This is a clear improvement compared to previous years. We know that thiscan be a stressful time for students (and their families) but we want you to know that because
you have started early and are working hard, you will be well prepared the university application
process that begins early in Year 13.
Please be aware that this process will not look the same for each student; some of you may plan a
GAP year, or military service, or work experience, some of you may apply to 10 universities (our
maximum) on several continents while others will apply to only five well-chosen universities in the
same country.
Part A: What you need to know...
1) Upcoming Lunchtime Sessions for Year 12 students:
Please make sure that you join the sessions that are relevant to you. January 4: Researching Australian universities
January 5: Researching universities in the UK
January 6: Researching universities in Thailand and other Asian countries
January 7: Researching universities in North-America

Part B: What needs to happen in Year 12
1) Decision: What to study
Year 12 students must tackle the question of WHAT to study at university based on your
passions, interests and skills. Surveys like Do What You Are, the Career Interest Profil-er, and True Colors should be seen as tools to help you understand yourself better. Stu-
dents applying to study in most countries in the world will need to narrow their search down
to a program of study such as international development or marine biology. While most
students who choose to study in North America will have a bit more time to choose a major
within their Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science (one or two years), students interest-
ed in programs such as Engineering, Architecture and Business will apply directly to theirprogram. While a student may apply directly to Law or Medicine in most countries, this is
not possible in the USA or in Canada.
2) Decision: Where to study?
Which continents/countries are you applying to?
3) Discussion about family finances
Students and their parents must engage in a discussion about how much money is available
per year for three-four years. The recession has been tough on families all over the world
and this may have an impact on where your son or daughter can attend school. It is much
better for students to understand what is (and what is not) possible now rather than later.

B) Conducting the Research
After the student has come up with a set of criteria, he/she should begin researching using
a myriad of resources including online resources, friends, family members, your teachers
and Counselors. Students should be visiting new websites as often as possible, and talking
with the university representatives who visit NIST. You can find the dates of these visitslisted on Naviance and in the College Counseling Newsletters.
You need to keep track of what you learn in an organized manner. We strongly recommend
that you use the University Research Data Spread Sheet that we have sent you. Feel free
to adapt it to suit your needs. If you cant locate it, please contact your counselor to get a
new one.

Current Year 12 NIST Student:
I have benefited greatly these past few months from taking the Pre-SAT course with Top Scholars. I feel like I have
managed to learn a lot of different techniques related to passage based reading and grammar rules which have helped
me to understand the approach I need totake towards different types of questionsI was more than happy with the
overall content of the course. I have enjoyed learning with Robert and felt that he really did go out of his way to help
us understand the material on this test and I will look forward to learning with him again.
Current Year 12 NIST Student:
I learned more than I wanted which I found to be really good for my overview of American culture and the SAT I
feel more comfortable with the readings but the harder questions still puzzle me. I like the method because it gets
me more involved in the class and Robbie has done well in making it more interesting than it really is.
Current Year 12 NIST Student:
Rob has done an amazing job these past few weeks. I had learned a lot throughout this course especially the grammarpart. The most important thing is that Rob is a very friendly guy and always helps me when I need help. He gave me
many SAT tips that I could use throughout the test and I find these very useful. At the same time I felt that I im-
proved a lot these past few weeks and I felt very confident every time I take a test. In the future I hope I could
learn with Rob again.
If the SAT is required for your university applications then it is very important that you register
for the SAT at NIST on time. We dont have any reserved spaces for NIST students anymore. When the test center is full, there is nothing we can do to secure you a space. Year 12 students
can take the SAT 1, and SAT Subject Tests at NIST again in May, June, October, November and
December. Please consider the timeline below and/or contact your counselor for more information.
